SanDiegoRadio is Branching Out

By Joe Nelson

SanDiegoRadio is my baby. Always has been, always will be. The only thing that I feel it's lacking is consistency. Radio can have some runs of constant action and plenty to write about. There are also times where there is absolutely nothing new. I have tried to fill those times with Spotlights and some other content, but to me, it just is not enough. I need to and want to write more.

I have found a solution. For at least 10 weeks. I have been granted media credentials to the new professional football team in town, the San Diego Fleet. The Fleet is a part of the Alliance of American Football.

The AAF is a league consisting of eight teams. The Fleet will play in Mission Valley's SDCCU Stadium.

There are some familiar names associated with the AAF. Daryl 'Moose' Johnston, Hines Ward, Steve Spurrier, Mike Riley, and San Diego's head coach and local resident Mike Martz. After watching two games last week, I was impressed with the action. One of the plays that stands out is San Diego's QB Mike Bercovici getting leveled by San Antonio's Shaan Washington. A hit so hard, it popped his helmet clean off. His helmet went further than the ball on that play.

I think the most impressive part of that play was how Bercovici stayed in the game and took the next snap. That's the beauty of this league. All of the players have a chip on their shoulders, and want to prove themselves in this second chance of their careers.

I don't intend to be your traditional 'sports writer'. I want to use my strengths and incorporate them into an enjoyable article. Game summaries can be found anywhere. I want to do something unique.

I am attending Sunday's Fleet game to start in this new journey. Sometimes there will be a radio tie-in. But sometimes there will not be.

I hope you enjoy this new venture. And if you are at a game, look me up.

Thanks as always for tuning in.
