The Ronnie & Bo Show

By Joe Nelson

Bo Woods, son of the iconic Jack Woods of Charlie and Harrigan, reached out to me and would like to share his venture with his partner Ronnie Merrell. On Sunday, Bo and I talked about their Podcast which is now available on iTunes. and many other platforms.

The Ronnie & Bo Show is a 5-day a week podcast. Affectionately called, "the best-worst podcast you've ever heard". Bo grew up in San Diego the son of Jack Woods a.k.a. "Charlie" of San Diego's legendary morning team show Charlie & Harrigan. Bo said, "Well, I followed in my father's steps when I decided to get into radio. I worked on-air at Y-95, Z-90 and KCBQ-FM, before making it to Dallas and eventually K-EARTH 101, Los Angeles. But now I truly know the feeling of having an on-air partner. Ronnie Merrell is the funniest guy I know".
Ronnie Merrell earned money in college writing jokes for Jay Leno's Tonight Show Monologues. Merrell added, "It's a perfect c…

Steve Breen Takes Home an Emmy

By Joe Nelson would like to send out a huge congratulations to the San Diego Union-Tribune's Editorial Cartoonist Steve Breen.

The feature consists of interviews with local homeless people accompanied with his trademark illustrations. Breen is also a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for his previous work.

Here is a segment from PBS News Hour with Breen talking about Street Art.

Fantastic work, Steve!

This past Friday, the 13th, Shelly Dunn of The DSC announced her retirement. Congratulations, Shelly on nearly 30 years of waking San Diego up and making us laugh!

By the time I got off work, the whole world knew about it so I was not in a big hurry to publish.

Since then I have reached out to my contact with the show again and learned that even though Shelly will be moving on at Month's end, the future of the show is not yet known. No new contract has been signed and there has been word that Entercom has interest in bringing in the morning team.

Will they move to Entercom? Will they stay at KFM-BFM? With owner Tegna notorious for not having much interest in the radio side, this could get very interesting.

As we say... Stay Tuned!

SAN DIEGO, CA – 91X and Goldenvoice have made the difficult decision to cancel X-Fest 2018 on Saturday, August 11th.  After considerable thought and reflection, we feel we are unable to deliver the level of experience the fans expect from X-Fest.

91X is owned by Local Media San Diego, LLC; a San Diego-based broadcasting company backed by private equity firm, Thoma Bravo, LLC.  LMSD also operates Z90.3 (XHTZ-FM) and Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM).

Just a friendly reminder that SanDiegoRadio also has a job board, so if you have job postings, send them my way!

I know of a few people asking me if there are any opportunities available right now, I hate to see anyone out of work for too long, so I'd be happy to publish any.

I have been quiet on the whole DSC/KFM-BFM story for a reason. I don't publish speculation, I run on facts.

I have something I can share now and it includes statements from both sides. I reached out to someone very close to the show and management from the station. I received statements from both.

I will place them below without comment and let you, the reader decide where this could be headed.

Thanks to all for responding to me for this information.

From the DSC 'side':

"What you’ve seen and read is *mostly* true.  KFMB could have worked this up a long time ago but purposely chose not to. Now they’ve lost any protection over their DSC brand. Why would they let that happen? You can draw your own conclusions, as have I. But none of them are good, and hardly encouraging. So it’s hard not to be offended. It’s hardly the way a company acts when they want to keep a show. And now I’d say that’s doubtful."

From the station:

Dick Warren

By Joe Nelson

Special thanks to Kevin Schrader from KPBS via SBE Chapter 36.

Thanks Kevin, Passing it along -Joe

Dick Warren, a veteran San Diego radio talent and engineer, passed away this week after suffering a stroke recently. He has been a member of the San Diego SBE chapter longer than any other engineer.

Dick worked at a number of legacy stations, including KSON 1240 and KSDO 1130 AM. He most recently served as a contract engineer for a number of lesser-known stations, such as KKSM Palomar College, KNSN San Diego, and KPRI (when it was Compass Radio 102.1).Dick Warren. Photo provided by his family.

Zeb Navarro of KKSM says a memorial service for Dick has been set by his family for July 21st. You can learn more and communicate your desire to attend by sending a message to his family at This is to help them get a good handle on how many people will attend.

There will also be two scholarships established in Dick’s name. One will be at Palomar Coll…
