Failure to Publish a Story

By Joe Nelson

A couple weeks ago, 105.7 MAX FM released their morning show. 'Kim and Sammy Jo'. I failed to report on this because by the time I got my new computer up and running and especially because of some medical stuff I have going on, I dropped the ball. By the time I got it all up and going, a significant amount of time had passed and the word was most certainly around town.

This was no slight to either Kim or Sammy Jo, it was just how I explained it, and I hope they return to the air very soon!

As always, thanks for your support in this tough time and thanks for sticking with me.

-Joe

Phil Farrar Takes Home the Gold

By Joe Nelson

National Award-winning San Diego and KOGO Radio broadcast journalist Phil Farrar has added some more hardware to his ever growing list.  This past Saturday on January 27th, Farrar received the Southern California Radio Television Golden Mike for a story he wrote, produced, voiced and edited in the 'Best News Serious Feature' category.  Phil talked to SanDiegoRadio about how the story came to be. Phil, thanks for your time.

The story was about the first student shot and killed at Columbine High School in Colorado back in 1999.  Rachel Joy Scott was gunned down while having lunch with a friend outside on school grounds.  She was posthumously honored last May during the National Conflict Resolution dinner held at the La Jolla Aventine.  Her parents were in attendance and received the San Diego Peacemaker award for the non-profit organization named after their daughter, 'Rachel's Challenge.'  Farrar says, "I was invited at the last moment to the dinner by Jessie Knight, Jr. and Joye Blount who are both advisory board members for NCR.  When they presented the award, I knew I had to tell this story about anti-bullying and how a grass roots non-profit organization has helped reduce teen suicides, depression, anxiety, school violence and may have helped prevent several school shootings around the world."

KOGO allowed Phil to do the story.  San Diego Unified School District has a direct partnership with 'Rachel's Challenge.'  The organization is testing a pilot program by allowing a member of the group to go to middle and high schools to talk with students.

This is Farrar's 3rd Golden Mike.  "It's an honor and a privilege to be recognized among the very, very best throughout Southern California." Phil says, "We are competing against San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura County and stations from Los Angeles."  Phil says any win is always a team effort.  "I received technical advice and help from producer/director Kevin Finnerty."  News Director Cliff Albert also reviewed the story before it aired and it was heard by thousands of listeners.

Phil has been honored with more than 70 awards during his twenty-plus years in radio and television here in San Diego for breaking news, military and sports reporting and anchoring.  He says, "You never set out to 'win' an award.  You do the best job you can to present the story in a unique, relevant and engaging manner.  I just want to provide and inform listeners and viewers with the best possible content so they make decisions or learn something from my stories."
Congratulations, Phil!!

Phil Konstantin on John Coleman's Passing

B Joe Nelson

My friend Phil Konstantin had a very nice tribute to his pal John Coleman, who passed away Saturday in Las Vegas. I wanted to share it here. Thanks Phil. Very nice.

Legendary TV personality John Coleman passed away January 20, 2018. He spent most of his 61 years in broadcasting as a weather forecaster.

------Some of his accomplishments include using the first Chroma Key for weather forecasts (that's the special set up where the forecaster can stand in front of a changeable map due to special processes-see the attached photo). John was the original weather guy for ABC's Good Morning, America. He was one of the founders of The Weather Channel on cable TV.

------John's last 20, or so, years on TV was at KUSI in San Diego. I had the pleasure of working with John at KUSI. He was a professional, and yet he could be fun and silly, too. His famous "K-UUUUUUU-S-I" was because the station owner once told everyone to emphasize the U in KUSI. John REALLY did that.

-----I have posted 3 photos of John. The group shot is from 1972. John is on the bottom row on the left. Another photo is John standing in front of a Chroma Key or "green screen" at KUSI. The third photo is a picture I took on September 24, 2006 when a bunch of us went on a behind the scenes tour at the San Diego Wild Animal Park (now called Zoo Safari Park). John was feeding one of the giraffes. The giraffe was literally John's biggest fan.

-----Here are 3 video clips which feature John Coleman. One is from 1968 in Chicago and shows John as part of the news team. The other two clips are when John was at KUSI in San Diego. In case you didn't know, "SOSA" stands for a "Sort Of Santa Ana" when dry winds blew in from the east. . . . .

-----We'll miss you, John.

John Coleman 1934-2018

By Joe Nelson

SanDiegoRadio.org has learned of the passing of yet another San Diego icon.

John Coleman, long time KUSI meteorologist has passed away at the age of 83.

John is obviously known around town as the KUSI weather man, but prior to that he was widely known as the co-founder of The Weather Channel.

John was also a part of the Joan Lunden and David Hartman team on the original Good Morning America.

SanDiegoRadio.org extends its condolences to John's entire family as well as the KUSI team.

C.S. Keys Has Passed Away

By Joe Nelson

SanDiegoRadio has received some very sad news.

Long time broadcaster (TV & Radio) C.S. Keys has passed away.

Keys arrived in San Diego in 2000 and quickly gained the respect of his fellow broadcasters and viewers.

This from Keys' online bio: "Recognized by the California State Assembly for his tireless efforts to help San Diego youth, Keys started his own foundations, C.S Keys’ KIDS with Athletes for Education Foundation, to help those in need. C.S. is a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and a graduate of North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina with a B.A. in English/Media Journalism. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and raised in the Philadelphia area, C.S. is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the National Weather Association, the NAACP, the National Association of Black Journalist, the San Diego Urban League and 100 Black Men of San Diego. A spokesperson for many worthwhile causes and a much sought after motivational speaker, C.S. is proud to make San Diego his home."

SanDiegoRadio extends their condolences to the Keys family.

SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson

This edition of The SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features JAM'N 95.7's Frankie V

SanDiegoRadio has the V-Bros Spirit!

Frankie, thanks for setting time aside for this interview, it's greatly appreciated

What is your current position?

I am currently the co-host of "Frankie And Tati" weekday mornings on JAM'N 95.7 as well as the Assistant Program Director and Music Director. I handle the afternoon show on 102.3 The Beat in Austin TX, weekends in LA at 102.7 KIIS-FM, in Boston on KISS 108, in Portland OR on JAM'N 107.5, and in Seattle on POWER 933! I am also heard nationally on many iHeart Radio stations throughout the country on the RCHR channel.

How are things with you right now? Life, work!

Life has been a rollercoaster for me the past couple years. From losing my dad, to moving to Boston, to moving back to San Diego, to moving back into morning drive... but life is starting to settle back in. I am fortunate that San Diego has accepted me as one of their own since 2006! The friends that have turned into family, co-workers that have been there for me, and beyond... shows me how lucky I truly am! Getting to wake up this city each morning is amazing, life is great!

San Diego… What is your favorite place to visit? Where is your favorite place to go out and eat?

It depends on my mood and there is SO much to do in this city. If I am looking for a good dinner with great people I love going to BARBUSA in Little Italy! They always treat me like family when I walk in the doors. If I am headed downtown for some drinks and a hang, I love to spend time at Rustic Root!! The team running that venue make for an amazing experience every time. I lived in Pacific Beach for 8 years of my life, so if I am feeling nostalgic and in the need of the beach... I return to the old stomping grounds! Big Bear, Palm Springs, Coronado, Del Mar Fairgrounds, and beyond... just so much to do and drive to from San Diego its amazing.

Is your job still as exciting like it was day one?

I get just as excited today as I did the first time I turned a mic on 16 years ago!

How do you view radio now, compared to the past, then looking to the future?

I view radio as a medium that people will always need! Sometimes I look at it as an even more important piece of media than ever. The connection we get to make with listeners, the companion we become on their ride to work, the new music we help them discover... it all happens because of radio!

How vital is the connection between an on-air personality and the listener?

That is key!! My favorite thing to hear from people is "You made me laugh on my way to work"! It is amazing that we speak into a microphone and hundreds of thousands hear it in their cars and beyond. That one on one connection is what makes this medium such a great one.

What are some facts about you that maybe no one knows, but could be interesting?

I played college football at Hamilton College in New York and am a member of the fraternity Delta Upsilon. I grew up in Framingham MA, which is 15 miles west of Boston. My younger brother also works in this business! He is the night host, assistant program director, and music director at KISS 108 in Boston!!! My sister is a cop and would arrest me and my bro if she had the chance lol!

What is your favorite movie?
Major League

With Social Media being so prevalent, tell me the advantages of using FB, Instagram, Twitter to connect with your listeners

Social media is an extension of our brand! It is a way to keep connected with our amazing listeners even after we are off the air! I love to learn about our audience via their social media and I enjoy keeping them connected to my life outside the studio as well!

What is your favorite radio moment?
Getting the call for my first full time radio gig, I will always remember it. I was substitute teaching to pay bills and was in the middle of 7th grade math class. My phone rangl, told the students I had to take the call, it was the program director at WJBQ in Portland Maine offering me the night show!!

How long have you been in radio?

My first part time air shift was in 2002

What broadcasters do you look up to?

The first person in media I looked up to was Steve Burton. He is the sports director and anchor at the station in Boston I grew up watching. He grew up on my street, went to the same schools as I did, and I would say to myself "if he did it, I can too"! Steve took me under his wing early in my career and taught me lots. I will always look up to him and many other broadcaster that took the time to guide me

If you could go back in time and work during any era of radio for a few days - which would you choose?

I enjoy this era of radio! It is such a 360 degree medium now. On the streets, in the studio, on your socials/websites! Technology has made this era a great one.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I'd like to give a big thank you to the amazing listeners in San Diego that have made this city home for me since 2006! Thanks to all the other media members in this market as well, we are all in this thing together!

SanDiegoRadio Needs Your Help

By Joe Nelson

Well, as luck would have it, my laptop has taken a dirt nap. I am borrowing one for a bit, but it is time to invest in a new one.

What makes it worse is that Apple has discontinued the mobile app for running the site, so I can only do it from a computer.

I do SDR for free, as a service to the radio industry and its readers/listeners.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Show adds Emily Griffiths

By Joe Nelson

iHeart Radio's The Show on Rock 105.3 has added another voice.

Emily Griffiths, formerly of The Jeff and Jer Showgram is now part of the morning show.

Congratulations, Emily!
This is from Rock's website:

"Emily Griffiths is a second generation San Diego native.

She began her radio career in 2003 as a courier at Clear Channel Communications.

After realizing how much she loved radio, she approached The Jeff and Jer Showgram (who had recently arrived at Star 94.1 FM) and asked them to give her a shot as an assistant...and they did! Emily watched, learned and eventually became a full-time on-air personality with the Showgram. She spent 7 years with the Showgram and has great love and admiration for the team who was inducted into the Radio Hall Of Fame in 2016.

Emily is beyond excited for this new chapter in her life with The Show on Rock 105.3! The fit couldn’t be more perfect as rock, punk and live music are some of her favorite things.

Some of her MOST favorite things include: being a momma to her rambunctious 7-year-old son Reed; being a fiance; cooking; crafting; spending time with her dogs, cat and fish; being outside; and smiling."

Sileo Departs XEPRS

By Joe Nelson

The Mighty 1090's Dan Sileo announced yesterday he has left the station. No reason was given, other than to say that there is a new station coming and that they are 'building it around him'.

Sileo took over the morning show duties at 1090 in early 2014 and the ratings for the sports talker did gain a significant uptick.

What does this mean for mornings at 1090? Joe Tutino and Ben Higgins are currently on the air, but could this leave the door open for Scott & BR to return to mornings? Does Hacksaw see a return to afternoons?

The bigger picture- What station is building around Sileo? I had several messages overnight. Many believe it is FM 949. Is this the long-anticipated flip to sports talk?

Stay tuned...
