Jack Vincent 1917 - 2017

By Joe Nelson

  Sad news to report today.

Radio (KCBQ) legend Jack Vincent has passed away at the age of 99.

Jack recently came home to live comfortably after spending some time at the Grossmont Acute Care Center.

Jack was one of a kind, and I am honored to have been his friend.

What a great life this man had, he told many stories while we played pool at Shotgun Tom Kelly's house, I never once beat him in a game.

Condolences to Jack's family and friends.

He was a treasure, that is for sure.

Thanks to Owen 'Wes' Western, here is the Benny goodman clip Jack used to close his shows at KCBQ: Click Here

Here is a video from his birthday a couple years ago at Shotgun's house, courtesy of Terry Frost: Click Here

You may often see the 'Job Postings' on SDR, but I wanted to share another service I can help with. Resumes.

Even more important today, with the NEWS of Bay City Television signing off, and the losses at the two alternative stations, I am offering this service to you.

Simply email me your resume, please remove anything you don'w wish to be public, and I will take care of the rest.

You can send them to SanDiegoRadioJoe@gmail.com.

Bay City Television to Cease Operations

By Joe Nelson

I will be straight forward with you here. I received this notice much earlier today. I held onto it until now.

My reasons? With it affecting so many people. Hard working people, I wanted all the staff and their families fully aware and not reading it in a column. While I do strive to get you the information first, in situations such as this I cannot allow myself to potentially hurt anyone. Now that I see it is on social media, I can share it now. Having said that, here are some words from the GM of CW 6 Chuck Dunning:

"Lesslye and I returned from meetings with top corporate management last night. As anticipated, we now have the future direction for Bay City we can share.

I wish I had better news. Our corporate ownership has decided that the Channel Six signal and transmission facilities will be used to re-transmit their Channel Nine network effective 12:01am on May 31st. After 64 years, Bay City Television will cease operations.

As we transition to our closing, we will discontinue News programming at the conclusion of our 10pm show on Friday, March 31st. The majority of positions here will end at that time. There will be a small staff retained between March 31st and May 30th to operate the station. We will be communicating with each of you over the next few days.

There are no words that can express my sadness at having to send this email. Senior management and I worked very hard to offer alternative scenarios in the post CW world but corporate has made their decision.

I had a competitor comment recently that we lasted much longer than people thought we would. The reason for that is you, and others that were here in the post-Fox era. We only lived because of your blood, sweat and tears. You produced 43 hours per week of local news on a shoestring budget, understaffed, and with a challenging infrastructure. The many Emmy Awards you won are testament to your peers acknowledging how good you really are in spite of the challenges.

We lived because we had engineers that could perform miracles with duct tape and paper clips 24/7. We had production staff that believed the show will go no matter what. We had a sales department that continually gained a higher share of revenue than Nielsen said they should. We had dedicated people that gave up their nights and weekends to make sure CW6 was in the community. Everyone coped with aging systems and short staffing that challenged you every day. But the job got done. And done well.

As I reflect back on the last 9 years, I'm reminded of something Dan Fouts (Hall of Fame SAN DIEGO Chargers quarterback) said of the Air Coryell era. "We never lost a game. Sometimes the clock just ran out. "
The same can be said for Bay City.

I sincerely hope for each of you that this setback turns into a new opportunity and leads you to even greater things.

What we do over the next 60 days will say a lot about our character. We didn't quietly fade away after Fox and we shouldn't now. This is our chance to try new things. Experiment. Shout. Make the other stations glad they don't have to compete with us after March. We are not going to close the door gently. We're going to slam it.

My door is open. But, I will also be out and around. Happy to talk, answer questions, reminisce, bitch. Whatever.

We didn't lose. The clock just ran out."

Questions From a Reader

By Joe Nelson
I received this email a little ways back. I sat on it longer than I should have, but between work and the holidays, I hope the writer can understand.

I wanted to open these questions to the readers. I think a wide range of ideas and opinions could go much further.

Please utilize the comments section to reply, and give it a bit to show up as I have to approve all comments for content/slander/vulgarities. Thanks

   The letter:
I'm interested in knowing how to become part of talk radio as the next leg of my career and would enjoy/appreciate virtually any perspective you might want to offer on it, especially here in SD.

First, is the talk radio market here and nationally growing in your estimation?  What's your outlook on it?  Is the supply of talk shows crowded already or might there be room for more?
How is the "typical" talk show run?  Writers?  Producers?  How are stories developed?  Is the staff active full time even though the shows are just a few hours in length?
I'd like to meet some of the people who I have heard here.  Is there anyone who wouldn't mind sitting down with me for 15 minutes?  I'd like to meet Brett Winterble, Sully, Carl DeMaio.  Do you know any of these people or friends of theirs or people on their shows?  What would you recommend as a good way for me to start doing some informational interviewing?

Sincerely,
David

It's a San Diego Radio Triple Play

By Joe Nelson

Three stories for you today. I will give them to you rapid fire.

1- Nathan Fast, 'Night Maniac' on Channel 933 is headed to Texas. Fast who was also heard on KIIS in Los Angeles will assume the morning drive duties at CBS Radio's KVIL (Top 40).

Nathan tells SanDiegoRadio "I'm so thankful for all the talented people I've had the honor of learning from over the past four years in San Diego & LA. John Ivey, John Peake, Haze, Frankie V, Jesse Lozano, Geena the Latina, Chino and Kramer just to name a few - and I'm thrilled to take on this next challenge." Nathan adds "I'm also looking forward to rocking a belt buckle bigger than my head & incorporating "y'all" into as many conversations as possible.

Good luck, Nathan and family!

2- Sam Bass today announced  he will be moving to weekends, Saturday & Sundays 10AM-3PM. I don't think anyone can argue the fact that the man is a legend in this town. Sam has been at KyXy since 1978! Joe Rosati will fill the midday slot.

3- Garett Michaels has just signed off 100.7 KFM-BFM. He is gone from the website as well. I am trying to hunt this one down. Birdies? Hello birdies!

Thanks and have a great weekend!

SanDiegoRadio Spotlight - The Radio Edition

By Joe Nelson

SanDiegoRadio Spotlight - The Radio Edition

January 2017

Rick Lawrence

Happy New Year, SanDiegoRadio readers!

After a little bit of a break, the Spotlight is back. This month we feature 100.7 KFM-BFM's Rick Lawrence.

Hello Rick, thanks for accepting the Spotlight for January. I have been wanting to feature you for some time now, so let's get started.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off, I want to thank you Joe, for even asking me to be profiled, but I have to ask. Who would really want to know about me? Seriously? The fact that you are asking, makes me feel like I actually may be doing a good job, though!

Right now, I'm just that voice in- between songs, that hopes you might give a listen to what I say. At least, maybe, I can tell you who did that particular song you heard but couldn't remember. At best, you're going to stick around on the hopes I will tell you something about that particular artist. What they are doing currently. An anecdote or funny story about them you haven't heard before, or maybe a personal experience I've had with them that I can share.

It's a weird business being on the radio. You go to work with the hopes you are going to inform, entertain, and have fun with an audience you hope are listening, but can't see. And aside from a few phone calls, you have no idea, who or how many people are really listening to you, and what their reaction may be! It's like being on stage and being a comedian or an entertainer, and getting no reaction back to judge how you're doing. I could be talking to a wall for all I know. My hope, though, is that I can bring something extra to your listening experience, by being a real human being, you might even live next door to, who has a great story to tell or a little quirky personality, that may endear me to you. A friend you can hang with everyday, who doesn't judge, likes the same music as you do, and can make you laugh once in awhile. You know?Something you just can't get on the premium radio, music services.

I was born and raised here in San Diego. Grew up in the Pt. Loma /O.B. area as a 3rd generation San Diegan. I'm currently having a blast on the weekends and filling in whenever, at 100.7 KFM BFM, and I love it! The music is everything I know and grew up with. My boss Garett is one of the best P.D.'s I've ever worked for and I'm once again working with old friends I've known and worked with for years, like Dave Shelly and Chainsaw , Ruthie, Robin Roth, and Jeff Stewart. All the best in the business and the best people, too. Most people might know me from being on the air on ROCK 102.1/105.3 from the early 90's and reporting news and traffic for most of all the i-Heart media radio stations for 20 years. I occasionally get a gig for some voice-over work, but right now, I am honestly looking for a job, during the week days, that could use a person of my many talents, which are many!. I've done just about everything, from managing a hair salon as a stylist myself, to running a courier company in L.A. to delivering mail as a letter carrier for the USPS in Encinitas. Radio and entertainment have always been my passion, though.

My two favorite radio stories are when I was on the air waiting for Eddie Vedder to arrive at the station (ROCK 102.1 at the time ). for an interview, and I introduced myself and he said...."I was listening to you on the way here! Man, you've got an awesome voice!" I thought I was gonna crap my pants! The other is when the night jock at the time, Todd Kelly met a girl at a ROCK 105.3 club night and said to her.." Wow! Rick Lawrence would love YOU!". Apparently she took note. She showed up at my club night the following week to check me out. He was right! We've been married for 20 years now!

Being a local, there are so many places in San Diego that I love to go to, especially the beach. I could tell you this or that beach is the best, but to me, they're all the best . Just give me the waves, the smell of the ocean, and a San Diego sunset and I'm in heaven. It's all home to me! We've also become a foodies delight in the last few years. So many culinary delights to experience in every unique neighborhood. In the end, though, I'm a simple guy. I could live on Mexican food, which without a doubt is the best here in San Diego, and Sushi. No shortage of those places either!

I thought about an acting career at one time and actually got my A.A. in Theater Arts. I absolutely love, live theater, and the art of film-making fascinates me still. If you asked me what my favorite film was, it would be really hard to give you just one, but the one that always comes to mind is "Cinema Paradiso". don't ask me why, though. It just does something to me.

I have to mention the broadcasters and talented people that I really admire and still look up to. First off, before I ever even thought of getting into radio, Jim McInnes and John Leslie at 101.5 KGB were my radio "heroes". Jim had the humor, John had the voice, and they both had the knowledge of everything they played and more. I wanted to be the combination of those two. Still workin' on that one! But, incredibly, as fate would have it , I ended up working my first radio job at KGB when they both were still there! Needless to say, they were instrumental in helping me to hone my chops behind the microphone.
Eddie Vedder & Rick
All in all, I've been so blessed to have spent my entire 32 year radio career in my beautiful hometown, flying over its absolutely gorgeous beaches, majestic mountains, and beautifully diverse neighborhoods, as an airborne reporter and spinning the best music ever heard on the planet. I'm hoping and praying this wondrous and joyful ride will never end!
