SanDiegoRadio April Spotlight - The Radio Edition

By Joe Nelson

SanDiegoRadio Spotlight - The Radio Edition

April 2017

Brett Winterble

What is your current position? Afternoon Drive 2:30 to 7pm on 760 KFMB

How are things with you right now? Life, work... It’s a great time to be on the Air in San Diego while a lot of people might be uncertain or fearful, I am excited, every day is different, every day is a chance to do something amazing. WE are so blessed to be alive, at this time, in San Diego. Imagine doing radio, on the 33rd of February in the northern climes of our nation. That’s how blessed we are!

Do you have anything you’d like to talk about? Such as stories from radio? San Diego… I Love the breaking news of the day especially in afternoon drive, we get to talk about all the stories the morning shows are going to hit—in real time nationally and internationally-- but locally, but I really love talking about what gets listeners emotionally connected—threatened teacher layoffs. High taxes, government mismanagement, apathy and ‘the swamp’ I want to talk to the man and woman who is following the rules, chasing the American dream—making payments on an upside down house scheming how to pay for their kid’s college all while having to deal with social ills, homelessness and the influx Prop 47 and Prop 57 releases. The endless supply of lunacy from Sacramento gas taxes to Washington DC incompetence makes for a really rich hunting ground.

What is your favorite place to visit? The Beach in Carlsbad Village.

Is your job still as exciting like it was day one? Yes, more so.

Where is your favorite place to go out and eat?  I like trying new places, this is such an amazing place to live, I just love exploring.

How do you view radio now, compared to the past, then looking to the future?
Radio is the most intimate medium. Sure your phone has every possible piece of information on it, you can watch sports in the shower or catch up on Netflix binge watching while stuck in traffic on the 5, but radio is intimate. Newspapers couldn’t kill it, TV couldn’t kill it and the multi-platform delivery device of the telephone won’t kill it either. It can only be reckoned with. WE are the listeners WE serve. That will be timeless even when we are in flying Jetsons cars.

How vital is the connection between an on-air personality and the listener? The connection literally is the subject predicate component of broadcasting. We provide the subject the listeners tell us what that subject is about—whether by phone calls, emails, tweets or lost ratings.

What is your favorite movie?  Lawrence of Arabia

With Social Media being so prevalent, tell me the advantages of using FB, Instagram, Twitter to connect with your listeners. To paraphrase an NFL post game coach’s cliché—I use it in all three phases of the show—prep, show delivery and finding out where I am on the interest scale.

What is your favorite radio moment?  The 2004 ALCS when the Red Sox defeated the Yankees in the greatest Reverse Sweep of All Time and as a Red Sox Fan I got hear it in NYC on the Yankees Flagship. Sports Radio is just special when it comes to historic moments. I can only listen to my teams in the playoffs on radio feeds while standing in my kitchen. I get too nervous to watch it on TV.

How long have you been in radio? I started at Emerson College waaaay back when we used Reel to Reel, Cart Machines, Razors and grease pencils….and we took hourly AP newsfeeds with tones to indicate the tape start. Late 80s’. I went in wanting to go to Law School, I am still in radio.

Is there anything in particular you like about the San Diego market vs other markets you’ve worked in? Smartest Radio Audience Anywhere. PERIOD Full Stop.

What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had? This one now.

What broadcasters do you look up to? Growing up—People who host overnight talk shows. Larry King in the Overnight, Larry Glick a guy in Boston, Curtis Sliwa on WABC in NYC. When I was a kid growing up in El Paso, Texas I loved taking a transistor radio and trying to pick up stations in San Antonio, Albuquerque and Denver on skip. Radio, especially talk radio was the original internet! I love the tempo and passion of sports talk and I like to transfer those passions it to News Talk—without some of the naked homerism that some Sports Talkers display. Sometimes you just have to analyze—warts and all.

If you could go back in time and work during any era of radio for a few days - which would you choose? World War 2 in London nearby Edward R Murrow.

Is there anything else you’d like to share? If I could do it all over again I would do it this way - only more so.

R Dub's "Slow Jams 4 Kids" Brings Water to Uganda

By Joe Nelson

R Dub!’s “Slow Jams 4 Kids” Charity, Listeners and Friends in Radio Bring Water Well and Clean Water to
Nyakoi Akuoro Village in Northeastern Uganda

R Dub! Returns to Africa and Cuts Ribbon Following Completion of Well

LOS ANGELES, CA, April 5, 2017— R Dub!, Director of Programming for Z90 (XHTZ) and Magic 92.5 (XHRM) in San Diego and Creator, Host and Producer of internationally syndicated hit weekend radio show Sunday Night Slow Jams, partnering with non-profit Water 4 Kids International, and listeners, friends and colleagues across the U.S. radio industry, celebrated the delivery of a water well and clean water to Nyakoi Akuoro Village in Northeastern Uganda last week. R Dub!, a world travel enthusiast, returned to Africa on Wednesday, March 30, 2017, and cut the ribbon for the new well on behalf of “Slow Jams 4 Kids”, the global charitable initiative he launched earlier this year. A video of the ribbon-cutting may be viewed at:

“Slow Jams 4 Kids” completed a successful fund drive in just 26 hours after the initiative’s announcement in January, raising $10,500 from listeners, friends and colleagues in radio to provide the village with a water well and clean water for the families there. Construction of the well began shortly thereafter.

R Dub! was inspired to take action after his first trip to Africa in December. What he saw there was unthinkable: Nyakoi Akuoro Village had no clean source of water, and instead, villagers were forced to walk over a mile to a dirty water source--a disease-infested pit, full of mosquitoes and sickness. The bad water source caused numerous problems, including fights at the source and domestic violence. Its contaminated water (shared by animals) led to diseases including typhoid and cholera. Long lines led to children missing school because they spent half the day fetching water. A young child even fell in and died.

R Dub! recounted: “On March 30th, after traveling over 10,000 miles halfway across the globe, eight hours of driving until the road ended, and then another hour on a dirt trail, the entire village was waiting our arrival to celebrate. I was met with a parade, banners, songs, presentations and speeches. The village's mayor was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and I had the honor of pumping the well for the first time as hundreds anxiously stood by with their water cans, ready for their first drink of clean water. They've never had clean water here.”

R Dub! continued: “I got to say a little something before we cut the ribbon and pumped that first bucket of crystal clear, clean water. I explained to the hundreds of villagers (with a translator by my side, of course), that this well came from not me, but from YOU: my friends, family, listeners, clients and colleagues. And that you all send the village your love and blessings from the USA. They cheered so loudly!!! The good folks of Nyakoi Akuoro now have clean water for the first time in their lives. Starting today, they'll never go without clean, fresh drinking water... And the amazing part: it's all because of YOU! Thank you for helping me with this special project and for bringing LIFE to the wonderful people in Nyakoi Akuoro.”

The best news: Slow Jams 4 Kids will fund a new water well every year for needy communities around the world and has already started digging a second well in the Aminit Border village in Uganda. To find out more about the next village that Slow Jams 4 Kids is bringing a well to, and how you can help, please visit
