RadioInk's Best Local Sports Talkers

By Joe Nelson

The annual list of 'Best Local Sports Talkers' is out and three San Diego hosts made the list.

Here is some of the criteria needed to be met to be considered: "All of our nominees must be local for this list, not nationally syndicated. Companies, co-workers, peers, even listeners can nominate their favorite host or team. We reach out to the nominees and ask them to answer a few questions. We talk to their program directors. We interview market managers, experts in the sports talk format, and radio executives in specific markets. And, of course, we consider ratings, revenue the host or team has driven to the station, and how much commitment they have to the local community and charities."

Who made the list? See HERE

By Joe Nelson

Entercom San Diego/FM 949 SD has hired Rich Herrera as their Senior Executive Producer for the Padres baseball games. Rich will also serve as the Padres Pregame host on the new flagship station.

Herrera is a veteran broadcaster with plenty of baseball under his belt.

He has worked for the Oakland As as their post game host, the San Francisco Giants post game host as well. He has also worked for the Golden State Warriors.

More recently Rich was host of pre and post game shows for the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball Network as well as the play by play announcer for the team's spring training games as well as fill in work during the regular season.

Rich was also the director of radio operations for the Rays, running the team's statewide radio network. He also worked for Fox Sports Arizona.

Rich has a ton of national radio experience as well as a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner.

Rich and I have already spoken, and we have made plans to meet up for a more in depth discussion. A SanDiegoRadio Spotlight: Baseball Edition, of sorts.

Brad Martin to Retire from KPBS

By Joe Nelson

I received a letter from Kevin Schrader of KPBS. He asked that I run this. Best wishes to you, Brad Martin!

Dear KPBS Staff

After 17 years at KPBS, Brad Martin has announced his retirement from the station. When he came to KPBS, Brad was working at The Planet as 103.7 was known those days, and his on-air name was Gary Chase. He was also the voice of KYXY, doing their liners, promotions and spots, a job he held for many years into this KPBS tenure. Brad's career took him from the hills of Pennsylvania where he grew up to the beaches of Miami and then to San Diego, with a few stops along the way, which is typical for the commercial radio industry. Along the way his voice entertained, delighted and soothed millions of listeners.

After a career of travels, Brad found a home at KPBS as the afternoon host of All Things Considered and eventually as the voice of KPBS Television. Brad has always been kind and generous, and felt like he had found a place where he could make a positive impact.
We will all miss Brad; his sense of humor and his desire to be a team player and make KPBS a success.

Tom Karlo
General Manager
KPBS

Kevin Schrader
HDTV Television Engineer

Thanks for your letter, Kevin.

By Joe Nelson

AFI ADDED TO
91X WREX THE HALLS

PERFORMING SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, AND REPLACING KALEO, WHO ARE CANCELLING DUE TO ILLNESS.

(San Diego, CA) – San Diego’s 91X announced today the cancellation of Kaleo from the Wrex the Halls concert on Sunday, December 11 at Valley View Casino Center.  Filling in their spot will be legendary punk rock band AFI.

AFI will join Blink-182, Pierce the Veil, and Jimmy Eat World performing live at the concert.  Tickets are still available.

Kaleo plan to schedule a new show in April, and released a statement about the cancellation:

“Our deepest regrets and apologies that we will not be able to perform at the 91X Wrex the Halls show on Sunday.  A band member has fallen ill with a severe case of pneumonia and he needs this time to rest and recover. Thank you as always for your love and support.”

“We are super bummed about Kaleo, we wish a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing them back at full strength in April,” said 91X Program Director Mike Halloran.  “We are also completely blown away to have AFI come to San Diego and make Wrex the Halls 2016 more memorable than ever.”

91X (XTRA-FM 91.1) is owned by Local Media San Diego, LLC; a San Diego-based broadcasting company backed by private equity firm, Thoma Bravo, LLC.  LMSD also operates Z90.3 (XHTZ-FM) and Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM) as a member of SDLocal, a joint operating arrangement between LMSD and Midwest Television, Inc., operators of 100.7 KFM-BFM (KFMB-FM) and AM 760 (KFMB-AM).
