Mike V Named APD at KFM-BFM

By Joe Nelson
MIKE V. NAMED APD FOR
KFM-BFM

(San Diego, CA) - San Diego’s new 100.7 KFM-BFM announces that Mike V. Vasquez has been hired as the station’s Assistant Program Director.

In addition to his APD duties, Mike V. will also host the evening show from 7:00pm to 12:00am.

His radio career began in Fresno at KEZL back in the mid-80s. He was named Program Director in 1993 and, after taking that station to #1 in the ratings, was offered the PD job at KIFM/San Diego in 1998. During his 16 year tenure at KIFM, he led the station to #1 in the ratings dozens of times. KIFM also won the coveted “Marconi Award” in 2005 for Station of the Year under his leadership.

“SDLocal has become a force to be reckoned with and I’m so pumped to be joining the KFM-BFM team!” said Vasquez.  “There’s a winner’s mentality here and everybody brings their A-Game on a daily basis. I thrive in this type of environment and look forward to contributing to our team’s success!”

KFM-BFM Program Director Garett Michaels said, “With Mike’s deep knowledge of the San Diego market, his strong record of ratings success, and his unbridled passion for rock-n-roll, he is the outstanding choice to join KFM-BFM as our APD.  I’m stoked to have him as a collaborator and teammate!”

KFM-BFM 100.7 “variety rock” format has already become the top ranked rock station in San Diego.

SDLocal is a joint operating arrangement with Local Media San Diego, LLC, operators of radio stations 91X (XTRA-FM), Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM), and Z90 (XHTZ-FM), and Midwest Television, Inc., licensee of KFMB radio stations 100.7 KFM-BFM, AM 760 KFMB, and television station CBS 8.

Hilary

What is your current position? On air (middays) and Music Director at 91X

How are things with you right now? Life, work….. CRAZY. I just moved from Cardiff to north PB, got the stomach flu, and left FM 94/9 & started at 91X all within the same week! I need a nap.

San Diego… What is your favorite place to visit? I grew up at the beach so the beach is my favorite spot, with hiking local trails (Elfin Forest, Iron Mountain, Torrey Pines) a close second.

Is your job still as exciting like it was day one? YES. I still feel the need to pinch myself regularly. I still can't believe I get paid to do what I love!

Where is your favorite place to go out and eat? I have so many!! Current favorites include Solace & The Moonlight Lounge, URBN pizza, Taco Surf, Moto Deli, Best Pizza & Brew, Rimel's, & The Orient Thai in PB.

What are some facts about you that maybe no one knows, but could be interesting? My first concert ever was TSOL, but it was at a water park in Palm Springs and the only reason we went was that you got free admission if you had been at the waterpark that day. I was 13!! My mom had no idea what she was letting us do. It was gnarly & it was the first time I ever saw a moshpit! My mind was blown.

How do you view radio now, compared to the past, then looking to the future? I still love the essence of the medium and I always will: sharing music with people, sharing live music experiences, trying to spread a little joy... a lot has changed and radio will continue to evolve, but the core of what it means to me remains the same (like the song does, but different).

How vital is the connection between an on-air personality and the listener? To me it's important - I grew up (in L.A.) feeling a strong connection to the jocks on KNAC and KROQ, so what they said about bands, etc. really mattered to me. Now that people can stream music anywhere, so that "real person" connection seems even more vital. But that may just be wishful thinking!

What is your favorite movie? Singles

With Social Media being so prevalent, tell me the advantages of using FB, Instagram, Twitter to connect with your listeners - It's HUGE! It's the way I mostly connect with listeners now! In the old days, our request lines would be ringing off the hook all the time. Now, 99.9% of our interaction with listeners is online. It's trippy but certainly has some advantages.

What is your favorite radio moment? Oh gosh, I have a million! The time I asked Beck to sing "Debra" in the 91X studio and he busted out an incredible falsetto a capella version for me, or having Coldplay dedicate "Green Eyes" to me onstage, or watching Jane's Addiction play backstage for about 30 of us, or the whole Jack Johnson thing...

How long have you been in radio? Since I started in college radio in 1992, so... 25 years? HOLY SMOKES!

What broadcasters do you look up to? Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw, Kevin & Bean, Tami Heide, Jesse Lozano

If you could go back in time and work during any era of radio for a few days - which would you choose? The 70s! Not sure how long I could keep up with the lifestyle, but I heard some crazy stories...

Is there anything else you’d like to share? Just that I am so, SO grateful to get to return to 91X and be on the air in San Diego for almost 20 years now. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world!

NEW INFO
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a new fine in addition to one in April Tom Taylor reported on, this is his article from Apr 22:

San Diego’s KURS/1040 is also slapped with a $12,000 fine and a four-year license renewal due to violations of the public file rule (missing quarterly lists) and failing to file several biennial ownership reports. Like Rhode Island’s WJMF, KURS essentially turned itself in by checking “No” on the certification box for the quarterly filings. The FCC also finds that KURS “incorrectly certifies that all biennial ownership reports had been filed,” since it missed filing in 2007, 2009 and 2011. KURS has failed to clean up that problem, or to supply the FCC with a “detailed listing of the missing issues and programs” quarterly lists it re-created. Like WJMF in the previous story, the FCC says the conduct by KURS has “fallen far short of the standard of compliance.”

Thanks Tom!
