Farewell to a Great Reporter and Friend

By Joe Nelson

As I began to incorporate local TV News into SDR, the timing couldn't have been any better for meeting Gary Buzel.

I was visiting 107.9 Mountain Country in Alpine talking to owner Chris Torrick and he had a guest. Gary was doing a report on the small town radio station.

Time went on and Gary became a trusted friend. I would go out on the town helping him with stories for the evening news for CW6. We went to a house fire, interviewed lifeguards for Summer safety, out to Jacumba when they were being awarded a skate park.

He taught me a lot about the TV side of media. My favorite moment was when I did a story where we followed both Mayoral candidates David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer, went back to the station and I did my own story on how a reporter gets his segment ready for the telecast.

Gary then became involved with 'droning'. He bought a drone and we went to several locations capturing aerial footage. Most notably an abandoned Air Force Base in Blythe. Everything was going great, until.. well I'll let the video tell the story.

That droning experience blossomed into something deeper and the reason he is leaving CW6.

Gary, his wife Jennifer and two boys will be moving to Las Vegas and he will be working at 'Avisight'. He explains it as a company with 'trailblazing efforts' in the drone industry.

Gary is already quite the accomplished person, while in Connecticut, he was a police officer. Then got his pilot's license. Then to San Diego as a TV News reporter. Quite remarkable to me.

Although I am saddened that a friend is leaving the area, I am excited not only for him and his next adventure, but that I will now have a place to stay in Vegas.

His last newscast is Sunday night.

Congratulations Gary!
Joe
