The Saturday Night Sock Hop Will Be No More

By Joe Nelson

I received some bad news recently and had to share. I don't like sharing such stories, but I know I have a responsibility. Plus given Mike's passion for radio, it makes it hurt a little more.

Maybe another station would love to have this show? Hint hint

Mike - best wishes and look me up if you need anything!

Very sorry to report that there will be no more music on KCBQ after next weekend.. I've got to wrap up the show after 6 years, and Jack Flash (of the Moldie Oldies show on Sunday) wont be playing any more music on his show, either. We got the word on this late last week.  Nothing can be done about it. I'd love to get it on another station, but I dont have much hope. Just thought you'd like to know. Bummer of a situation.

But it was a nice run, and you'll never again hear 99% of  what I played on the radio again, AM or FM. I"m glad I had the chance to do it when I did, because now it would be impossible on KCBQ. Thanks for giving me a little space on your great website, it's the place to go for local radio info. I"m sure my radio days are over.

XTRA 1360 Signs New Power Lineup

San Diego, CA – August, 2016 – XTRA 1360 Fox Sports San Diego today announced a new line-up including the debut of “Hardwick & Richards” in the mornings featuring the duo of former Charger Nick Hardwick with XTRA 1360 personality Judson Richards, and middays with “The Mark & Rich Show,” featuring veteran radio and TV personality, Mark Willard, along with former NFL Lineman, Rich Ohrnberger.
XTRA 1360 Weekly Lineup:
·   “Hardwick & Richards” – 6 to 9 a.m.
·   “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” – 9 a.m. to Noon
·   “The Mark & Rich Show – Noon to 3 p.m.
·   “Loose Cannons with Hartman & Costa” – 3 to 6 p.m.

“The opportunity to team with a talent like Judson is incredibly exhilarating,” said Hardwick. “Judson and I will have a show unlike any other here in San Diego. You’ll be listening with a smile plastered on your face.”

Hardwick, spent 11 seasons as the San Diego Chargers’ center from 2004-2014. During his career, he was considered the anchor for a dynamic offensive line, developed into a fan favorite and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2006. Richards has hosted the pre- and post-game shows for the Chargers Radio Network and “Chargers Power Hour,” heard weekday evenings on XTRA 1360.

In addition, the station will debut an all-new, local midday show “The Mark & Rich Show.” Willard, who commonly fills in for Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports Radio Network, began his radio career in San Diego with the original XTRA 690, and most recently worked for ESPN LA 710 in Los Angeles. Ohrnberger, who will also serve as a part of the pregame show on the Chargers radio network, spent two seasons with the team after being drafted by the New England Patriots.

“I’m excited to return to San Diego and create something new with such an incredibly talented and determined group,” said Willard. “Rich is going to be a star in this format.”

KCBQ Jack Vincent Under Care

By Joe Nelson
KCBQ legend Jack Vincent has been at a care facility in the east county for a couple months. Jack is having complications from a troubling pancreas and gall bladder.

I did visit him recently, and will again today. When we spoke he was still very quick witted and sharp.

I don't know what the future will bring in Jack's future, but I know he's appreciate some positive thoughts and prayers.

Jack, now 98 years young, was the engineer and jock at KCBQ. In 1955 Jack was the first person on the air when the station moved from downtown to Santee, where today a monument dedicated to KCBQ and all who were involved.

Jack, rest up! We need you at Shotgun Tom Kelly's Pool Hall!

Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation Seeking Help

By Joe Nelson

Roy Robertson
Secretary, Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation
619 823 9401

San Diego, CA – July 29, 2016

Established in honor of one of San Diego’s most well-known and well-loved media personalities, the Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation is now reaching out to the community to find neighbors in need of financial support.  The Foundation was created to honor Larry’s memory by helping people throughout San Diego County, who Himmel connected with during a long radio and television career.

The Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation is a recognized 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) non-profit organization, which will support a variety of groups and individuals in need of assistance.  Whether providing for children dealing with illness or injury, families touched by crime or natural disaster, youth programs in need of resources, or San Diego’s military community, the Foundation aims to touch as many neighborhoods as possible.  Larry described his mission as a storyteller and broadcaster as “to make people feel better about the place they call home”.  The Foundation is currently asking for the assistance of the community to find potential beneficiaries.  If you know of a neighbor in need, you’re encouraged to contact the organization through their website,

Larry’s media career in San Diego spanned parts of five decades, working at local radio stations including KGB, KIFM and KFMB-FM.  He moved on to television in the late 1970s, and became a fixture on KFMB-TV until shortly before the time of his passing in November, 2014.  Himmel’s features reflected his comic style, warm personality, and his love of people with unique and engaging stories.  “Larry was so much more than a guy on television, he was everyone’s good neighbor,” said Dave Sniff, Chairman of the Foundation, KFMB Radio program director, and Larry’s longtime friend and colleague.  “He helped his neighbors feel better through the stories he told about the community he loved.  The Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation extends that unique connection to enable neighbors to help neighbors.”

Larry’s son, Miles, serves on the Foundation’s board and also works at KFMB Radio.  “I’m so excited about continuing my dad’s legacy here in the community he loved,” Himmel said.  “When my dad was in his hospital bed, he said to a close friend, ‘There’s so much I’m going to miss.’  We are doing this for Larry so that he knows his memory lives on.”

In addition to worthy beneficiaries, the Foundation is also currently looking for sponsor partners and donations so it can carry out its mission:  “to provide support and resources to deserving organizations and individuals in the spirit of Larry’s connection with the communities and people of San Diego County.”  Donations may be tax deductible.  Contact your tax planning professional for details.
