April 2016
Jason Austell
NBC 7

Jason, thanks for your time!

Joe Nelson: What is your current position/Channel/Shift?
Jason Austell: Co-Anchor of NBC 7 News Today

JN: How are things with you right now? Life, work…..
JA: Things are going great right now. My wife and I will be married 10 years next March. We live in La Jolla where my wife has had a Pilates studio for 20 years. Two great dogs and a 1 year old granddaughter who I can’t get enough of. Work is great too as we are just settling in to our new building which is pretty amazing.

JN: Do you have anything you’d like to talk about? Such as stories from TV News?
JA: Right now it’s all about the NFL draft. I’m a football nut, a lifelong Chargers fan and I can’t wait for the season to start. I do a weekly Chargers segment for NBC 7’s “Sportswrap” during the season and it’s still amazing to me that I get to interview players in the locker room after practice. Just great experiences to be able …

TONIGHT! Rich Singley's 70s Party

Image
ByJoe Nelson
This is tonight... Hope to see you at The Music Box.

Rich Singley, KRLY 107.9 Alpine wanted me to share this... Good stuff, Rich!

It starts by picturing a guy talking in a Twilight Zone Rod Serling voice:

"Imagine a world where everything is psychedelic, colorful and trippy. A world where a large gong instrument can end it all for aspiring stars. Where dress and fashion is so far out and groovy that it extends well passed the normal and practical..AND with a tribute band that is so incredible that even the band it honors comes to listen"

Our world of fantasy and fun starts with the sobering message that cancer kills hourly and that we need science to stop this disaster. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is set up to collect funds from this show that go directly to research, care and treatment with amazing prolific results. While this event will be fun, exciting and memorable, your attendance will provide monies to the people at war with cancer.

TONIGHT IN SAN DIEGO’S KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN FUNDS SPRECKELS RAW SPACE THEATRE RENOVATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Diego, CA (April 6, 2016) — Local variety show Tonight in San Diego and Spreckels recently announced their partnership to raise $15,000 in an effort to renovate Tonight in San Diego’s new home, the Raw Space Theatre.
The collaborative group launched a Kickstarter campaign in February and successfully raised $15,773 in just 21 days.
“We have a lot to do, including paint, bathrooms, the electrical grid, air conditioning, new lighting, and installing a sound system,” said Executive Director, Fale Luis. “It’s a fixer-upper, but the best kind, where you can clearly see the end result and know it’s going to be beautiful. All we need is some help to bring in the equipment and supplies and a little bit of elbow grease.”
"There is a ton of excitement with the renovation and our Season Premiere Live Taping, kicking off on Monday, April 11th at 7:30pm. “ added Luis.…

Jer Returns for 'San Diego Tonight'

Image
By Joe Nelson

San Diego Tonight is coming this summer to KUSI TV.

Veteran radio personalities Jerry Cesak and Anita Rush are coming out of retirement!
'Jer', formerly of Jeff and Jer will team up with Showgram producer 'Little' Tommy and Anita Rush for "San Diego Tonight".

San Diego Tonight will tape on May 10 and premier June 3 on KUSI and will run on Friday nights throughout the Summer.

It will be taped in front of a live audience at the Lyceum Theater.

The template for the show will be similar to The Tonight Show, with Jer as the host, Anita as the booth announcer and Tommy handling the on-camera producing duties. The house band will be The Heroes.

Guests will be local as well as national celebrities.

While this is a new project and a new direction, this changes nothing about the radio show. I know Tommy is 100% dedicated to the show, now about to enter its 28th year.

SanDiegoRadio's Favorite Radio April Fools Prank

Image
By Joe Nelson

Today is the annually dreaded "April Fool's Day". Not my favorite day, but it can produce some pretty good material for radio.

I wanted to share what I consider as MY favorite April 1 joke...

Dave Rickards of the DSC orchestrated a brilliant bit that fooled many.

He 'landed' the Space Shuttle at Montgomery Field.

For the audio clip from the actual bit, scroll about halfway down in this interview with Dave from Oct. 2014.

Click HERE

I will give an honorable mention to another good one, I was working at KSON when Bert and Lisa told the listeners there was an ATM spitting out bills and wouldn't stop. The great part was, it was in front of the grocery store within view of the studio. The parking lot filled real fast!

Be careful today!
