RadioInk's Best Local Sports Talkers

By Joe Nelson

The annual list of 'Best Local Sports Talkers' is out and three San Diego hosts made the list.

Here is some of the criteria needed to be met to be considered: "All of our nominees must be local for this list, not nationally syndicated. Companies, co-workers, peers, even listeners can nominate their favorite host or team. We reach out to the nominees and ask them to answer a few questions. We talk to their program directors. We interview market managers, experts in the sports talk format, and radio executives in specific markets. And, of course, we consider ratings, revenue the host or team has driven to the station, and how much commitment they have to the local community and charities."

Who made the list? See HERE

Brad Martin to Retire from KPBS

By Joe Nelson

I received a letter from Kevin Schrader of KPBS. He asked that I run this. Best wishes to you, Brad Martin!

Dear KPBS Staff

After 17 years at KPBS, Brad Martin has announced his retirement from the station. When he came to KPBS, Brad was working at The Planet as 103.7 was known those days, and his on-air name was Gary Chase. He was also the voice of KYXY, doing their liners, promotions and spots, a job he held for many years into this KPBS tenure. Brad's career took him from the hills of Pennsylvania where he grew up to the beaches of Miami and then to San Diego, with a few stops along the way, which is typical for the commercial radio industry. Along the way his voice entertained, delighted and soothed millions of listeners.

After a career of travels, Brad found a home at KPBS as the afternoon host of All Things Considered and eventually as the voice of KPBS Television. Brad has always been kind and generous, and felt like he had found a place where he could make a positive impact.
We will all miss Brad; his sense of humor and his desire to be a team player and make KPBS a success.

Tom Karlo
General Manager

Kevin Schrader

Thanks for your letter, Kevin.

(San Diego, CA) – San Diego’s 91X announced today the cancellation of Kaleo from the Wrex the Halls concert on Sunday, December 11 at Valley View Casino Center.  Filling in their spot will be legendary punk rock band AFI.

Jagger & Kristi's Wish-A-Thon

By Joe Nelson

“JAGGER & KRISTI’S CHRISTMAS WISH-A-THON” RETURNS DECEMBER 1

14-HOUR MARATHON BROADCAST IS FUNDRAISER TO HELP SAN DIEGANS IN NEED.

San Diego, CA – Local radio morning show personalities “Jagger & Kristi in the Morning” will occupy the Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM) studio for a 14-hour marathon broadcast this Thursday, December 1, to raise funds for their “Christmas Wish” program.

Starting at 5:00 AM until 7:00 PM, hosts Mark and Kristi Jagger will encourage listeners, businesses and community members to make a donation.  All proceeds raised will be used to help needy San Diego families with a “Christmas Wish,” courtesy of the radio station.

Donations will be accepted by calling the studio request line 570-1925 or online at the station website,www.magic925.com.  Magic 92.5 on-air personalities Xavier “the X-Man” Soriano, Kelly Cole, Jay Michaels, and R Dub! will also be set up at remote locations around San Diego County, where listeners can donate in person and meet personalities.  The four locations are Mission Marketplace in Oceanside, Piazza Carmel in Carmel Valley, El Cajon Town & Country Shopping Center, and Terra Nova Plaza in Chula Vista.

Listeners can nominate a family member or friend in need to receive a “Christmas Wish” at the station website www.magic925.com.  Letters are collected and reviewed by Jagger & Kristi and station personnel, and wishes are granted starting December 2.  Letters are shared on the air, usually to the surprise of the recipient since you cannot nominate yourself to receive a Christmas Wish.

“There are more families than ever are struggling to pay rent, feed their families and take care of medical expenses,” said Kristi.  “If an unexpected circumstance happens, sometimes there is no recovering.  We want to help those families in need have a Merry Christmas!”

Jagger added, “The important thing to remember about Christmas Wish is all donations stay right here in our community, helping local families who need it most.”

Magic 92.5 is owned by Local Media San Diego, LLC; a San Diego-based broadcasting company backed by private equity firm, Thoma Bravo, LLC.  LMSD also operates Z90.3 (XHTZ-FM) and 91X (XTRA-FM) as a member of SD Local, a joint operating arrangement between LMSD and Midwest Television, Inc., operators of 100.7 KFM-BFM (KFMB-FM) and AM 760 (KFMB-AM).

An Article Worth Sharing

By Joe Nelson

From time to time I run across articles I think are share worthy in San Diego. This is one such article.

From Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media, here is a story on how to keep things 'fresh' around the station.

"Are There Zombies Lurking Around Your Radio Station?"

Legends of Alternative Mini-Thon Comes to a Close

By Joe Nelson

FM 94/9's  Steve West, host of Sunday morning's throwback show 'Legends of the Alternative' just wrapped up a full day of broadcasting for his 'Movember' fundraising for prostate cancer awareness.

Steve started this year's campaign Oct. 30 and since then, every Sunday has been auctioning off various items such as a Coachella surfboard, concert tickets and even the chance to be in studio with him which led into today. As a 12+ year survivor of prostate cancer, this is a movement that I know is very close to Steve.

Today, for each person who donated $100, that person could come in studio and select every song for one hour. He received so many pledges he stayed on the air until 8PM.

Today alone, they raised over $1,500.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Steve West, FM 94/9, and all the generous people who made this happen.

Here are some links for information and how you can still donate.

KURS Updates

By Joe Nelson

I have been searching for info on the silent KURS 1040.

Fortunately my birdies are chirping. (Respectfully appreciated)

Here are two nuggets:

----------------------------------------
I thought this might interest you (Courtesy www.radioinsight.com):

"El Sembrador Ministries is exercising its option to purchase Silent 1040 KURS San Diego CA from Quetzal Bilingual Communications for $900,000. El Sembrador is being credited half of its Time Brokerage fees paid since July 2014 subtracting $310,000 from the money owed. KURS went silent in early October after failing to pay tower owner Multicultural Broadcasting due rent. $10,816 from the deposit paid to Quetzal will go to Multicultural to restore the station’s use of the tower.

----------------------------------------------

A quick check of the FCC CDBS shows they went silent on 9/25-2016:

Exhibit 1
Description: JUSTIFICATION FOR REQUEST

THE LICENSEE IS NEGOTIATING WITH SITE OWNER TO CONTINUE USE OF SITE.

A check of the FCC ASR (Registration Number: 1262013) shows the tower is owned by Multicultural Radio Broadcasting, Inc

Thanks, friends!
