To Flip or Not to Flip?

By Joe Nelson
Since 100.7 Jack FM went Christmas, rumors have been running rampant on if they will flip... Country to take on KSON? Classic Rock to battle it out with KGB.

I have been told listeners should tune in to Dave Rickards on 100.7, Saturday at 10:00AM.

My inside source said "This will be fun"

Looking forward to the next week of musical formats!

Interesting...playing AC/DC all day and branding themselves as just simply 100.7FM...I'm thinking we're getting another classic rock/hits station in this market.

KFMB-FM is using the exact same game plan they used before they flipped to 'Jack' (from Star). Whole days of narrow stunting. And who would expect a flip to a permanent format during the lowest listening period of the year ? Yawn.

I can't see 'country' - every time someone tries country it just splits the 5.0 with KSON - and doesn't really mesh with the DSC either ... and what owner wants/needs another 2.5 format (at best)?
With an LMA agreement with BCA in place, you would have to consider any conflict with their formats/audience targets.

'Classic Rock' - seems to also guarantee another 2.5 split of that audience segment.

I would enjoy seeing an operation create a personality driven station that identifies with their market - over another narrow, tired 'more music' format ... but that is pie-in-the-sky and probably too risky for the bean counters.

Jack (the original Jack) was an interesting concept, but the lack of personality soon wore thin and the tweaks that followed (the DSC 25-54 adjustment) and then this year's CHR 'adjustment' only narrowed the play list and made listening more quickly tedious with each iteration.

Doesn't someone realize a station's 'personality' will pay long term dividends over paying some music list consultant to come up with the perfect narrow playlist that will eventually grow thin after the initial quarter's .2 rating bump ?

Even 'cutting edge' rock becomes narrow and stale.

Let's hope someone tries SOMETHING unique and enjoyable at KFMB - over a predictable, repeatable song-song-format explanation and station ID- song-song-format-explanation station ID format.

KFMB-FM already has a 3 share with almost nobody listening after 10 a.m. DSC is killing it. Just think what would happen if they could keep some of that morning cume after 10 a.m. and that could happen with some form of rock. Yes, personality radio would make sense. Adding Scott and BR would be a great idea, for instance. But all-talk is just too expensive and you can get more bang for your buck with music. There's no way its country. KGB's audience is there for the taking. Like taking candy from a baby.

If 100.7 could take a little from rock 105 and a lot from KGB, they could further dominate their men 25-54 numbers. If I was Clear Channel radio San Diego I would be freaking out. What do you know? They may even consider having live DJs on those stations after 10 a.m. It's been a voice track graveyard at KGB and Rock 105 for years. I say good for 100.7!

Oh and another thing.....if you look at Miller Kaplan, KSON underperforms as far as how much money it makes versus how well they do in ratings. They should be doing MUCH better considering its market share and considering its the only country game in town.

How about a KNAC type station... Yeah!!

Yes! A KNAC-type station! It could be called "Lemmy 100.7" in honor of the recently departed heavy metal icon!

If they did go classic rock, the best thing they could do is hire Coe Lewis away from KGB. Get one of the best radio talents ever who knows the format better than anyone in this town, and you might actually have legitimacy in San Diego. If not, it is just another station trying to beat KGB and they always win in the end. Just ask DSC.

Wrong. KGB has not had a direct competitor for ten years. They rely on voice tracked DJs all day after 10 a.m. These DJs are responsible for shows at other Clear Channel/iHeartradio stations across the country so they have to voice track their shows for numerous stations each day. ITS ALL PRE-RECORDED! If 100.7 comes at them live and local and doesn't play the awful Foreigner/Kansas crap that KGB lives and dies by, this new station will win out of the box. DSC trounces KGB in the morning by almost 3 to 1 already so what are you talking about "always winning in the end"? The fact that KGB has beaten 100.7 overall has to do with the fact that KGB has been the only classic rock in town, and that KFMB-FM has not had a clue how to program itself.....Until now. Plus, don't you think that DSC getting to say that they are coming back to avenge the station that s**t on them years ago is going to provide of hours of compelling radio? I do. That's great DSC storyline right there. Do you think for a minute they won't relish dropping a deuce on the station that publicly disrespected them? People love good story lines. And KGB's support is a mile wide and an inch deep. This change that 100.7 is making now is an obvious move that should have been made years ago. But the zeroes who have run 100.7 have been playing pop crap and having those awful Johnjay hacks phone in their worthless loveline staged drama telenovas in the afternoon. For the love of god, could it have gotten any worse? Its like the Jack-FM management wanted to torpedo their own station! Oh, and don't look know but it looks like KGB was losing anyway without competition. They just went from a 4.0 to a 2.9 in the brand new ratings. And you know what, it may be nice if Coe came over but if she doesn't, and she stays at KGB, she won't be able to keep the ship afloat on her own. I'm sure eventually she will make her way down the dial. It may not be just now.

I agree that 100.7's problems will be an easy and obvious fix. Play music that people who listen to the #1 morning show like.

As for Coe, I've never gotten her appeal. Jim McGuiness either. I just have never heard anything special in either of them. But, in recent years, when you only get to talk on the radio for 15 seconds at a time, it's tough to make much of an impact or connection.

As a longtime radio person who has worked with some of the best, and as a fan of the medium (radio), here is what makes her so unique: Everyone in and out of radio adores her because she is a great person and I had the pleasure of working a few times with her. Coe's appeal is her singular sound, she has a great sparkle and warmth. Every Program Director in town loves her sound and her work ethic. If you have listened to her over the years, her knowledge of rock is astounding and she has the ability to make each listener feel special and that she is their best friend. She has widespread community impact and actually cares. And many jocks have said this over the years, she makes the people who work with her sound better. I must sound like her dad because of all the positive things I say but she is incredibly unique in radio and if you ever listened to her over the years, you would get it. If KGB lost her, that would be really bad. If Jack picked her up, that would be huge. That is all I was trying to convey. And again, I am not her family member or anything, just someone objectively looking at the strategy of a new station.

Hmmm... It's now K-PUSS 100.7. I just heard one KGB artist (TOTO) on K-PUSS. Wonder how many more? Can STYX be far behind?

A station that i admire is 100.3 The Sound in Los Angeles. Top rated Classic rock station in the USA. Now,for old times sake,a resurrection of B 100 would be awesome. And wondering if bringing in Shotgun Tom Kelly would be a option as KRTH 101 he is still employed by but is owned by CBS? Isnt KFMB part of the CBS family? The B 100 moniker is still well known and has history here in San Diego

Can I just say that I am loving 100.7 K-Puss right now?! I like 98.1 well enough, but they don't play enough variety, just the same older late 70's early 80's songs and not enough variety from that time period. Please, 98.1, listen to 100.7 K-Puss and take a page from their book today!

Sadly, I think that 100.7 will be classic rock ::sigh:: as long as there is a VARIETY, I suppose it won't be so bad. I like deep tracks... the Van Halen day on 100.7 was good. I heard a lot of VH songs I'd never heard before and really liked (just a casual fan, obviously). Are you sensing a theme with me?

Cheers,
Lauren

I am loving K Puss! It reminds me if my childhood driving around with my Mom and this mix is everything I remember. Now I would love if they do a classic rock/aaa hybrid. Give us a mixture between 100.3 the sound and the former kpri!

Coe Lewis is a sweetheart who is impossible not to love. Unfortunately she works for Clear Channel, who changed their name to iHeart because everyone hates everything they are about. But guess what? It's still Clear Channel. If you ever tried to call the on air studios of KGB or KIOZ after 10 in the morning you would see that nobody is home. They use voice tracked DJs, many of whom aren't even in San Diego. Clear Channel is about to eat their lunch and I say good riddance.

K-PUSS was hilarious, and yet I couldn't stop listening. I could hear my preteen years all over again as KCBQ would blend in all the tunes I've heard today into one rock/soft rock (!!) mix.

So Jack became this hits station with some classic rock in it? We waited for THIS? Borrrrrrinnnnnggggggg.
