Comment Section is on Fire

   Early on in SanDiegoRadio's life, the only comments my stories ever got were spammy junk.

   But fortunately there has been a nice change. Over the last several months the comments section has come alive.
   The only real reason behind this story is to notify you, if I have done a story on you, or one that interests you, check it out. There could be some interesting commentary under there.

   Juliette Vara, formerly of Fox 5 San Diego and 107.9 Mountain Country recently landed a pretty nice gig after rolling the dice and moving to Nashville.

   Juliette was named as the 'Show Host' for The Grand Ole Opry! She tells SanDiegoRadio "Well, it's official -- God pulled this one off - I'm part of the Opry Family. I'm the new Show Host for the iconic Grand Ole' Opry. I'll be in charge of entertaining & hosting 4,400 audience members during the nightly shows, warming up the crowd, popping on stage in between acts to engage the audience, host games, manage prize giveaways. I'll be standing right on the very same stage as country music legends do every night & I'll be the first person to introduce and welcome people from around the world to the Grand Ole' Opry. Passing folks in the halls like Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, Belamy Brothers, Craig Morgan and Terri Clark...After 9 months of rejection & in actuality 6 years of tons of rejection in this industry -- It's ironic that the one place to give me a chance is Country Music's Most Famous Stage

RIP Rick Hill

   Rick Hill, veteran of San Diego Radio, passed away Tuesday evening at 6:30.

   Rick was suffering with Pancreatic Cancer and was recently hospitalized from its complications.

   I have feelers out trying to obtain information as to where those can contribute to funeral costs and service details.

Without a doubt Jose “El Gallo” Gadea is one of the most well known and popular radio personalities in the San Diego Hispanic community.  “El Gallo” gained his tremendous following with his successful morning show of more than 7 years called “El Gallo y la Bola” in which he stared and produced. “El Gallo” arrived in San Diego in 1998 and with his charisma and hard work was able to leave his mark in the Hispanic Community.  As a familiar household name “El Gallo”  will once again be heard in the San Diego airwaves starting Monday October 5th  on 99.7 La Invasora (XHTY). The “El Gallo” show will be San Diego’s ONLY live and local morning show broadcasting from San Diego. Live and Local each weekday morning from our Mission Valley studios. Monday-Friday 5a-10a


Jose “El Gallo” Gadea started his broadcasting career in1983 in Tijuana Baja California as an On-Air DJ for several radio station groups like Cadena Baja California, Fiesta Mexicana(XHKY) and Radio Latina(XLTN) among others.   Soon after in 1989 he immigrated to the United States and continued his passion behind a microphone in Los Angeles and Fresno California. In 1996 he moved to San Francisco and took over the morning show “El Sol de la Bahia” on KSZOL/Univision. 
After 2 years of great success he returned in 1998 to his border town home of San Diego and with continuous success and huge ratings of more than 7 years, El Gallo became the cities morning show favorite among the Hispanic Community on La Nueva 106.5(KLNV) with his morning show called “El Gallo y la Bola”. Not only did he maintain the #1 rated Hispanic morning show he also held the position of Program Director of both Univision stations La Nueva 106.5 and KLOVE 102.9(KLQV).
In 2007 El Gallo decides to further advance his broadcasting career and moved to Austin Texas were he landed a job as Program Director and On Air Personality on KLZT “La Z”/Emmis and was able to maintain the station as the #1 rated Hispanic station for 6 years. We Have a Radio Station Sale

By Joe Nelson has just learned in the last few minutes that 102.1 KPRI has been sold.

   A source very much 'in the know' has informed us KPRI has been sold to EMF Broadcasting. Not much more than that is known at this time, but I will publish more as it becomes available.

   EMF Broadcasting is  "Educational Media Foundation, a not for profit organization based out of Rocklin, CA.

   Word has it that the building has been cleared out and a flip is on the way.

There is a Rumble on the FM Dial

   Today SanDiegoRadio learned there could be a big change coming to a morning show in the very near future.
   The FM dial has already seen a lot of change, most notably with Jeff and Jer's announcement of Jer's retirement less than two weeks ago.
   It's my understanding that it's just a matter of crossing the T's and dotting the I's and it will be a done deal.
   For legal reasons I cannot divulge more than this, but I have been assured SanDiegoRadio will have the scoop!

91X Adds One More to its Homecoming Lineup

SAN DIEGO, CA – Local radio station 91X announced today that ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT has been added to the “91X Homecoming” concert.

RFTC joins PINBACK, FINCH, PEPPER and COLD WAR KIDS performing live on Friday, October 2 at Oceanside Pier Amphitheater.  “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Homecoming then with all this amazing local talent in one place,” said Halloran, 91X Program Director.  “Plus, we have one more band to announce, we are waiting for their kids to give the Dads, who are in the band, the OK.”

As with every year, the money raised will go to support critical services for those with AIDS and HIV in San Diego County. Last year we were able to raise over $2,000. Jerry Cesak to Announce His Retirement

This morning be sure to tune your radios to KyXy 96.5 as an announcement will mark the end of an era.

"This morning Jerry Cesak, one half of the Jeff & Jer Showgram is announcing he is leaving morning radio at KyXy 96.5."

“The reason I’m leaving radio can be told in 2 simple words,” Cesak wrote in a post to listeners on Facebook, “It’s time.”

“Life, I think, comes in chapters, and in my life, the radio chapter is over.  I still love what I’ve done every morning in San Diego for 27 years. I still love the show and my family who does it with me. I’ll miss them terribly and I’ll certainly miss our marvelous audience. So part of me is sad for sure.”

The Showgram will continue after Cesak’s departure as Jeff Detrow, Jerry’s radio partner for over three decades, will carry on with producer Tommy Sablan, co-hosts Laura Cain and Emily Griffiths.

“After thirty-three years, Jerry's not just my radio partner, he's my brother,” Detrow said, “That won't change just because we don't work together. Our show will continue. We are ready for the next thirty-three years!"

Joe, The Jeff and Jer Showgram is a huge part of San Diegans' daily lives.  While we respect Jerry's decision to move on we will honor and celebrate him over the next month; we are also thrilled for what the future holds for Jeff and the rest of theShowgram.

Jerry’s final show is Wednesday, October 14.

91X Homecoming Concert

SAN DIEGO, CA – Heritage local radio station 91X has announced the “91X Homecoming” concert, happening Friday, October 2, at Oceanside Pier Amphitheater.

Bands PEPPER and COLD WAR KIDS will perform live, with more to be announced.  All artists on the bill will have local ties.

“It’s amazing how many bands and their members start and stop here in San Diego,” said Halloran, 91X Program Director.  “PEPPER, originally from Kona, moved here over 10 years ago, and is now one of the biggest bands from this area.  COLD WAR KIDS drummer Joe Plummer has been involved in local projects for many, many years, includingBlack Heart Procession, plus his work with national acts like the Shins and Modest Mouse.  We are pleased to have his homecoming.  More bands with San Diego ties will be added, I can’t wait to share who they will be.”

RIP Martin Milner

RIP Marty Milner. Not only one of my favorite actors (Adam 12) but also a radio host.

Marty co-hosted "Let's Talk Hookup" on The Mighty 690 starting in 1993. Thank you for the memories, Officer Pete Malloy.

Milner passed away Sunday night at his home in Carlsbad at age 83. In addition to Adam 12, Milner was known for his roles in Route 66, Dragnet and multiple guest starring roles in many 80's TV shows.

Specific duties include, but are not restricted to, the following:
·         Coordinate with department to oversee promotional calendar of appearances and giveaways, following up on details for activation, including confirmation, winner sheets, follow-up and delivery of prizes for winners.
·         Write on-air copy for promotional spots, on-air giveaways, website, event POP’s and others as needed.
·         Draft proposals for promoters and 3rd clients for promotional opportunities, including product giveaways, local concerts and events.  Confirm and activate within department.
·         Regular maintenance on station websites, including event listings, concerts, contests, and photo galleries and additional content as needed.
·         Organize event folders and software with updated information mirroring the promo calendar as it develops, communicating pertinent information to all relevant staff and departments.
·         Serve as station liaison for listeners and winners.  Enter and maintain documentation of winners and winner database.
  • Assist with general overall department duties to the Promotions Director, Promotions Manager and other station personnel.
  • Office duties may include: working with clients on pre-event preparations, listener correspondence, social network updating, filing, and other duties as needed.
  • Representing station on-site at events as needed.

  • Position requires a positive attitude, strong customer service and organizational skills.
  • Candidate must take initiative, be a creative thinker, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.  Two-Years College Preferred.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Website and Internet experience.
  • Knowledge of San Diego and surrounding area is a plus.

Peter Schwartz Returns to San Diego

            Peter Schwartz was named Senior Vice President, Market Manager and Director of Sales, CBS RADIO San Diego, it was announced today by Scott Herman, COO, CBS RADIO.  The appointment is effective onMonday, Sept. 14.

            Schwartz previously worked for CBS RADIO San Diego as General Sales Manager and then later Market Manager, spending 10+ years with the cluster.  In this role, Schwartz will manage all operations and sales for KEGY-FM (Top 40) and KYXY-FM (Adult Contemporary).

            “It’s a great day for CBS RADIO when Peter Schwartz returns to the market where he had so much success for us in the past,” said Herman. “I’m extremely excited and happy for our employees in San Diego as they welcome back one of the smartest and most dynamic leaders I’ve had the opportunity to work with.  They’re in very good hands.”

            Schwartz returns to CBS RADIO from Pandora where he was Regional Sales Manager and Senior Account Executive for select automotive sales accounts. Prior to Pandora, Schwartz was Regional Manager for MOGL, a start-up in the rewards loyalty space in San Francisco, building their operation in the Bay Area. Before MOGL, Schwartz was Vice President, Sales for Cumulus Media San Francisco, responsible for all station sales, including Giants and 49ers broadcasts.

            Schwartz began his radio career in sales in Las Vegas at KMZQ, now known as KXNT-FM which is part of the CBS RADIO cluster of stations.

            Schwartz received his degree in broadcast and film from Boston University's College of Communications.  He was an active Board member of the San Diego Make-A-Wish chapter, and also worked with the organization in San Francisco most recently.

SanDiegoRadio adds the San Diego Chargers

I was just reading about your new press releases coming from the Chargers. I wanted to let you know that while it’s true that the Chargers will air live on Thursday on NFL Network, that’s not the case in the San Diego market. The game will be blacked out on NFLN and alternate programming will be broadcast by the network instead. However, the game will be carried locally on KFMB. This is usually the case on these pre-season games.

It’s the final week of the preseason and young players around the league know this is their time to shine.

With final NFL roster cuts to 53 players looming this Saturday, this week’s games are a last chance for many players to make the roster. 

“The fourth preseason game gives players one more opportunity to prove they belong on the team,” says Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach LOVIE SMITH. “Show us what you have. This is a big week.”

For many of these players, they know this is their last opportunity to make the final 53.

Some of the highlight games in Week 4 of the NFL preseason:

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS at SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (Thursday, NFLN, 10:00 PM ET)                

Chargers linebacker MELVIN INGRAM has had a strong preseason and San Diego’s first-team defense had a productive outing against Seattle last week.

“We’re just trying to hold each other accountable,” says Ingram about the defense. “When we hold ourselves accountable, and hold each other accountable, it doesn’t get better than that. Everybody has to make sure they do their jobs.”

Chargers running back BRANDEN OLIVER has scored three touchdowns this preseason, including a 70-yard TD reception last week.

“Branden was just being Branden,” says San Diego head coach MIKE MC COY about Oliver, a former undrafted free agent who made a name for himself last preseason. “He’s just a football player that works extremely hard.”

After missing the 2014 season with an injury, 49ers linebacker NA VORRO BOWMAN is back and looks to be in Pro Bowl form. Last week, he played the entire first half and registered nine tackles and two sacks.

“He was just having a blast out there and it was the right thing,” says San Francisco head coach JIM TOMSULA about letting Bowman play the entire half. “He would have played all night if we had let him. He had a great look in his eye. It was great for him.”

For Bowman, he’s excited about what’s ahead.

“Just keep crossing these hurdles,” says Bowman. “Just keep taking the next step. I hold myself at a very high level. So until I please myself, I’ll keep working.”

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS at MIAMI DOLPHINS (Thursday7:00 PM ET)                

Tampa Bay rookie quarterback JAMEIS WINSTON, who was selected No. 1 overall by the Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft, has started each of the team’s first three preseason games and is gearing up for the regular-season opener on September 13 against Tennessee.

“My goal is to always get better every game,” says Winston. “I’m never satisfied. There’s always a way to get better.”

Buccaneers running back DOUG MARTIN has averaged nearly six yards per carry this preseason as he has rushed for 118 yards on 20 attempts (5.9), including a touchdown.

“Doug overall just looks great,” says Tampa Bay defensive tackle GERALD MC COY. “He’s showing it in the preseason and I think he is going to have a huge year.”

Miami quarterback RYAN TANNEHILL has had a magnificent preseason, completing 33 of 41 passes (80.5 percent) for 303 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 121.8 passer rating in three games.

“It’s a good start,” says Tannehill about his preseason performance. “Guys are getting open and making plays down the field. I feel like we’re trending in the right direction and we have to build on what we’ve done in this preseason.”

Miami’s defense has recorded nine sacks this preseason, including six last week against Atlanta.

“I think we’re ready to go,” says Dolphins linebacker KOA MISI. “I think we’ll be good this year.”

WINNING IS A HABITThirty-eight of the 49 Super Bowl champions (77.6 percent) finished the preseason with a winning percentage of at least .500.

Since 2000, the 15 Super Bowl champions have combined for a 38-22 (.633) preseason record during their championship seasons.
