SanDiegoRadio Spotlight - April 2015

What is your current position?

I am currently the morning show producer for Jagger & Kristi at Magic 92.5 XHRM-FM
How are things with you right now? Life, work…..

Things right now are great! I cannot really complain about anything when I have a job that I love and when I live in such an amazing city as San Diego!

Do you have anything you’d like to talk about? Such as stories from radio?

Hmm lets see...with radio there are always new stories each and every day, which is why I love it so much. I think the most recent amazing radio story I have is when we completed a "Jagger & Kristi's Wish List" for a 16 year old girl named Nyla. All she wanted to do was hug a giraffe because they were animals that gave her hope and strength because they always held their head high and showed confidence. We were able to put everything together and make her "wish" come true and get her up close and personal with giraffes. It was an amazing experience and to know that something that us as a morning show was able to do to make someone's dream come true is really touching and what really makes the job worth it!

San Diego… What is your favorite place to visit?

Ohhh, favorite place to visit...that's hard. San Diego has so many amazing places that it's hard to just pinpoint one down. I LOVE the beaches of Coronado. It has been the only beach I have been to in San Diego where I can find fully intact Sand Dollars! I also love walking around Balboa park and Seaport village! I also love the San Diego Zoo, I think I just love every place I visit in San Diego, it doesn't seem like there is a bad place to visit!

Is your job still as exciting like it was day one?

It really is. Everyday I am challenged by something new and its amazing being able to go to a job and always learn something new. Not to mention, working with Jagger & Kristi on a daily basis every morning is one of the best things I could ever ask for (I'm not just saying that because they are my bosses...but they really are the best bosses ever!)
Where is your favorite place to go out and eat?

Anywhere that serves food!!! My mom always told me "I live to eat, not eat to live." I pretty much eat a love anything (minus mayonnaise) I am a total sucker for some great seafood, crab or smoked salmon are some of my favorites. Oh and any place that has fried calamari you can always count me in!

What are some facts about you that maybe no one knows, but could be interesting?

One thing that most people don't know is that I am a black belt in Karate! My dad is a third degree black belt, so growing up that was always a big part of my life for my brother and myselfI also have 7 siblings – 2 of them who are under the age of 7!

How do you view radio now, compared to the past, then looking to the future?

I think radio today is very unique. I'm pretty young to the game of radio - but there are so many days that I wish I could go back in time to see what it was really like in the 80's. I hear so many amazing stories about parties, and bands and just everything where I feel that era would be great to experience radio when it was at it's peek. Nowadays we have so much competition with other music streaming services that it is really important us as radio personalities keep ourselves relevant. I am so blessed to work on a morning show where people don't necessarily tune into for the music but also for the connection they feel towards Jagger & Kristi. The listeners feel like we are part of their family. I think that is how radio has always been and needs to keep being. Radio is something that I believe will always be around, so long as you establish a connection with the audience so they don't feel like tuning out or turning on Pandora.

How vital is the connection between an on-air personality and the listener?

As mentioned above, extremely important. We do segments every Friday called "Breakfast with Jagger & Kristi" where I select an individual and their 4 guests to come into the studio and watch us work for an hour and really get the behind the scenes aspect of what we do. When they are in, we learn about their lives and they learn more about ours and you really connect with listeners on a one-on-one basis. Not only do we really enjoy it but they do as well and they leave feeling an even closer connection to Jagger & Kristi and Magic. Establishing that connection with our listeners is one of our main goals. Without them we wouldn't be around.

What is your favorite movie?

Do I have to name just one...?

Lets see, Im a huge sucker for sports movies. I LOVE "Remember The Titian's" as well as "Coach Carter." I also LOVE any and every move Leonardo DiCaprio is in (he is my future husband) and I loved him in titanic - I saw it 13 times in the theater when it first came out. (I was only 12 so don't judge me too much on that)

With Social Media being so prevalent, tell me the advantages of using FB, Instagram, Twitter to connect with your listeners

This goes right back to making connections with your listeners. Social media is such a big part of everyone's lives nowadays so using these mediums lets us connect with our listeners on a whole new level. Also, providing someone with just a simple "thank you" or response on any of their tweets or FB posts makes them feel as if they are part of your life and makes them feel acknowledge. So we always try to stay very active on Facebook or twitter and make sure we interact with all of our listeners.

What is your favorite radio moment?

I have a bunch, but hands down it was the day I met Jagger & Kristi’s dog Bodie! That dog is amazing, and brings a smile to everyone’s face J But I guess if Bodie was out of the picture I would say they day I was hired and given a shot at being Jagger & Kristi's producer.

How long have you been in radio?

I have worked in the San Diego radio market for about 4 and a half years. I also worked at stations back in Wisconsin when I was in college. I worked in Television and Radio when I was earning my degree in broadcast and digital communication, and once I graduated I packed up and headed to San Diego!
What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had?

When I was 15 I sold Kirby vacuum cleaners. I had to drag a huge vacuum cleaner door to door and try to convince total strangers to let me in their house to prove that their current vacuum wasn't doing a proper cleaning. It was interesting to say the least.
If you could go back in time and work during any era of radio for a few days - which would you choose?

I think the mid-80's. I just hear so many stories about radio during that era that it would be great to be a part of it.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Just that I feel really grateful to work and live in San Diego in a job that I love and working with Jagger & Kristi and everyone at my company.

San Diego, CA: San Diego’s #1 Alternative Station, FM 94/9 (KBZT FM) has announced the lineup for the 1st Annual Dirty Parts Festival (DPF) to be held Saturday, June 20th at the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. 
The lineup includes 7 bands playing on the FM 94/9 Main Stage and the Red Bull Tour Bus Stage: New Politics, KONGOS, Big Data, Saint Motel, WATERS, In the Valley Below  and Ex Cops.
“We’re really excited to bring our listeners, and the great music fans of San Diego, a top-notch show with some killer bands, all with a price tag that doesn’t exclude anyone” said Assistant Program Director, Music Director and Afternoon host Jeremy Pritchard “Giving people the chance to see 7 great bands for under $20 is really important to us.”

91X Poster Design Contest

San Diego, CA (April 17, 2015) – Heritage alt-rock station 91X is celebrating local talent by giving an artist the chance to create the X-Fest event poster in the X-Fest Poster Design contest.

Entrants will have their artwork judged by a panel including renowned street artist and former San Diegan Shepard Fairey, giving them exposure to some of the world’s most recognized artists.

91X encourages X-Fest Poster Design Contest entrants to create a poster using any manner of medium.  The winner’s design will be featured at X-Fest, and he or she will receive tickets and VIP treatment at X-Fest, including a copy of their poster signed by all X-Fest performing artists.

“If you’re a graphic artist, a painter, have wicked watercolor skills or are a damned good decollage artist, we want to see how YOU would design the X-Fest poster,” said Halloran, 91X Program Director.

Mighty 1090/San Diego Launches 'Padres Wednesdays'

    BCA Sports XEPRS-A (THE MIGHTY 1090)/SAN DIEGO is grouping several PADRES management guests on WEDNESDAYS for PADRES WEDNESDAYS PRESENTED BY U.S. BANK,” starting TOMORROW (4/22). 
   The weekly lineup will include “The Executive Report” with PADRES Exec. Chairman RON FOWLER and Pres./CEO MIKE DEE appearing on DAN SILEO’s morning show at about 7:35a (PT); Manager BUD BLACK will join middayer DARREN SMITH for “Lunch with the Manager” at about 2p; and “The Front Office Report” on SCOTT KAPLAN and BILLY RAY SMITH’s afternoon show will feature rotating PADRES guests, including EVP/GM A.J.    Local Media San Diego, LLC has an immediate opening for a bus driver to drive/operate our 45 foot MCI mobile studio.  
   Driver will be responsible for driving the bus to locations throughout San Diego for fifteen to twenty-five  hours a week.  Driver will interact with clients and public, so good attitude and positive attitude is a must.

Bus Driver requirements:
Class B license with air-brake and passenger endorsement
Experience driving buses
Must have flexible schedule

Hal Brown Passing

   Sad to hear about the passing of veteran newsman Hal Brown. I received this message from Mark Jeannette in my email. I wanted to share it. Thanks Mark.

Hal Brown former KSDO, KOGO, WTOP, KMPH-FM, BCA ,Passed away on March 15th from a sudden illness in Las Vegas NV. Has was on the air at KSDO-1130 Newsradio in 1978 when a PSA jet collided with a small plane over North Park in 1978. He was part of the first KOGO-NewsRadio team in 1983-84. He was the North County Bureau Chief for KGTV-10, Program director of the very first all news FM station KMPH-FM in Fresno. Hal was also the News Director of WTOP-AM in Washington DC during the Mid 90’s. Recently Hal was with BCA 1090am etc.

A Memorial Service / Surf Paddle out will be held on Apr 11 at Wind n Sea beach in La Jolla at 1pm
He is survived by his wife Joanne, Daughter Toni and his son’s Mark and Derek.

“We heard this huge explosion,” says Hal Brown, the announcer on KSDO’s morning news program. “I ran to part the curtains, and I caught a glint of falling metal out of the corner of my eye. Seconds later, we heard this tremendous explosion. Somehow, I knew there had to have been a midair collision. I interrupted CBS News to say there was a tremendous explosion in the North Park area. I said something like it was a midair collision and we’d get back with more details. That report hit the airwaves about 30 seconds after the crash.”

KSDO’s news director, Joe Gillespie, did something he knows is against unwritten broadcasting rules: He left his on-air post. “I heard the crash, and next thing I know, I’m looking for the keys to a station car,” he says. “I knew I had to get to the scene, and I knew the car had a radio. Before I delegated anything, I realized that I could probably do it faster myself. [Gillespie was the only one who knew where the car that had the transmitting radio was parked, and he had the keys in his possession already.] I knew we had to get something on the air. That was my goal. I didn’t want to be there just for the sake of being first.”

Gillespie believes he was at the crash site at Dwight and Boundary—tapes have him calling it Dwight and Boulevard—at the west side of the devastation. Channel 39 was at the east end. Neither Gillespie nor Britton remembers seeing the other. “My main focus was to see what was going on, then run back to the car radio to file my dispatch,” says Gillespie. By the time he reached the area of the crash, Gillespie had a live feed back to Brown, who was now running solo at the microphone, with sportscaster John DeMott working the phones.

Remarkably, Brown and DeMott were able to get San Diego Airport manager Maurice “Bud” McDonald on the phone to confirm that a PSA jet had crashed on approach to Lindbergh Field. Soon, CBS News was carrying KSDO’s reports live to the nation and the world.

BROADCAST COMPANY OF THE AMERICAS (BCA) VP/Programming HAL BROWN has announced his retirement effective JUNE 30th, 2009. Filling the shoes of the 40-year broadcasting vet with JACK EVANS. EVANS boasts 25 years in radio, six of those years in SAN DIEGO, including some time as SVP/Midwest and Rocky Mtn. Regions for CLEAR CHANNEL.
BROWN was named VP/Programming in OCTOBER, 2008. "In late 2008, BCA was struggling from a programming standpoint," BCA Pres./CEO JOHN LYNCH said. "Ratings had declined and the programming department was lacking leadership. HAL came in, righted the ship and his leadership and direction immediately reaped benefit ... I attempted to dissuade HAL from his retirement, but he was very clear when he took over the leadership of the programming department, that he wanted to retire soon ... I am pleased that Hal will continue to advise me and play a part-time role on XX [XEPRS] and provide content to the expanding XX website.
"HAL BROWN has provided a solid base from which to grow the BCA stations. I am saddened to see HAL retire," LYNCH continued. "However, JACK EVANS is one of the top programmers in the country. I have competed against JACK for many years and his intensity, his creativity, and commitment to winning is second to none. HAL leaves things in good hands with JACK EVANS."
"I'm truly honored for the opportunity to work with JOHN LYNCH and the team at BCA," EVANS said. "Looking at the successes Mr. LYNCH has had over the years, I am comforted to know there is still an owner of radio stations committed to local content for communities."

Carl DeMaio Co-Host of Afternoon Talk Show

San Diego, CA – April 1, 2015 – News Radio 600 KOGO announced today that one of San Diego’s highest profile political leaders, Carl DeMaio, will join the station.  DeMaio will along with Bob “Sully” Sullivan will host the DeMaio-Sullivan Report every weekday from 1-4:00 p.m. beginning Thursday, April 2, 2015.

The DeMaio-Sullivan Report will combine investigative journalism with inside knowledge of politics and an eye on advancing solutions.  While the show will focus primarily on local topics, it will also weigh in on national stories that have particular impact or relevance to San Diegans.

“We are thrilled to welcome Carl DeMaio to our lineup and I have no doubt that with his experience as a government watchdog and his inside knowledge of politics that this will be the most talked about show in San Diego,” stated Brian Long, Program Director for KOGO.

DeMaio served four years on the San Diego City Council and is credited with helping reform city finances during one of the most turbulent times in the city’s history.  At times both big business and big labor opposed his ideas, but in the end the vast majority of his prescriptions were adopted.  DeMaio also garnered national media attention as a gay Republican willing to take on his own political party and challenge it to change.
