February 2015 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson

The February 2015 edition of the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Kalie, from 91X!

Joe: What is your current position?
Kalie: I am on air at 91X doing the overnights and weekends.

Joe: How are things with you right now? Life, work…..
Kalie: Life is busy, but great! Working late nights allows me to go on day adventures and never stop exploring San Diego.

Joe: San Diego… What is your favorite place to visit?
Kalie: Ooooo that is a tough one…. can I just say, the ocean? If I am by the water, I am a happy gal. Can’t go wrong with a Torrey Pines hike, cruising around OB or the harbor.

Joe: Is your job still as exciting like it was day one?
Kalie: Yes, but in very different ways! When I first started as an intern, I would get giddy every time I stepped inside the building. I never knew who I was going to see or meet. Being from San Diego, It was just crazy being in the same building as people I grew up listening too.
These days, I am still in awe and get giddy when I go to work at such a legendary station. It’s a dream come true, really!

Joe: Where is your favorite place to go out and eat?
Kalie: How about places?? Can’t go wrong with Bueno Forchetta in South Park and Juniper & Ivy in Little Italy. If you just want a good drink, I love Seven Grand! that place is like the Beauty and the Beast library for whiskey!

Joe: What are some facts about you that maybe no one knows, but could be interesting?
Kalie: A lot of people don’t know that I am a twin. Yes, there are two of me… Dun Dun Dunnnn! I also LOVE Sloths and can’t loose in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors…seriously, it’s true.

Joe: How do you view radio now, compared to the past, then looking to the future?
Kalie: Since I am the youngest on air personality at 91X, my co-workers would probably laugh if I tried explaining how radio used to be back in the day. They like to joke around about how I wasn’t even in the womb when 91X started in 1983. So, let’s talk where It is now and how the future will probably look… We interact with listeners in a different way using social media forums and texting. People don’t like to talk on the phone as much, texting is another way listeners get to win prizes and communicate with us. The online and texting interaction is only going to continue to grow!

Joe: How vital is the connection between an on-air personality and the listener?
Kalie: It’s HUGE, I think it’s what helps set you apart. It makes it more personable and helps you really get to know your audience. What they like or don’t like!

Joe: What is your favorite movie?
Kalie: It changes all the time, but I will always love Austin Powers.. ‘Are those sharks with laser beams attached to their heads?’

Joe: With Social Media being so prevalent, tell me the advantages of using FB, Instagram, Twitter to connect with your listeners
Kalie: Social media forums have turned into an extra phone line in a way. Listeners don’t call as much, it’s how you communicate and engage with your audience not only in San Diego but everywhere!

Joe: What is your favorite radio moment?
Kalie: I think it would have to be X-Fest 2013. That was just an insane show. It was sold out and the crowd had a ton of energy!! A bunch of us ended up going on stage and dancing with 30 Seconds to Mars ending it with confetti and screaming fans- it was a moment I will never forget!

Joe: How long have you been in radio?
Kalie: Five years and counting….

Joe: How long have you been in the San Diego market?
Kalie: Five years. Lucky for me, it’s the only market I have worked in.

Joe: San Diego is a great city to work in, I'd say we have it pretty good.
Kalie: It’s San Diego, what's not to love! I understand this market because I grew up living in it! San Diego is big, but it feels small with all the different communities. The best part is each one is different!

Joe: What is the most interesting job youve ever had?
Kalie: Ha…this by far!!! Or if you count me being a ‘fun facilitator’ at company picnics for a catering company. I would make up games and airbrush tattoos on people when I was 15… I am a terrible artist, so it got interesting!

Joe: What broadcasters do you look up to?
Kalie: Howard Stern of course! Also, a bunch of people that I have worked with at 91X. I have been able to work with such San Diego radio legends who have and still are teaching me a lot!

Joe: If you could go back in time and work during any era of radio for a few days - which would you choose?
Kalie: The 80's for sure! The stories jocks have from that time are nuts!!

Thanks for your time, Kalie!

The San Diego County Fair

By Joe Nelson
As January is far behind us, and even February flying by, let's look ahead to summer!

One of the biggest sponsors of SanDiegoRadio is The San Diego County Fair. Who doesn't love fair food, rides, fair food, art, animals, fair food, concerts and of course fair food?

This year's fair theme is "A Fair to Remember: A Celebration of World's Fairs, and Balboa Park". The fair is celebrating the 100 year mark of the Panama-California Exposition held in beautiful Balboa Park in 1915.
The fair will be open Friday, June 5 at 4PM and wraps up Sunday, July 5. It will be closed on Mondays and the first two Tuesdays.
The concert calendar will be released in a few weeks, and I will post it here on SDR.
SanDiegoRadio wishes to thank the San Diego County Fair for being a huge supporter!

Why No Kraska Story?

By Joe Nelson
Some may have wondered why I did not run anything on the tragic Kyle Kraska shooting Tuesday.
It's simple, really. When TV News, the radio, Facebook and Twitter are blowing up immediately after the incident, there really is nothing for me to do that would be different. There have been other big stories I have chosen not to run as well. I think it's a bit of information overload. wishes Kyle a safe and speedy recovery.

By Joe Nelson

SAN DIEGO, CA – San Diego alternative rock station 91X (XTRA-FM) has given the thumbs up to Adam Lisicky to host the 6:00 PM to Midnight evening on-air shift.

Lisicky, whose on-air name is “Adam,” began his broadcast career in 2006 as an Intern at 91X.  A year later, Adam hosted a show on Internet radio station “X1FM,” followed by an air shift at “Live 105” (KITS-FM) in San Francisco from 2010 to 2012.

“I’m a San Diego native who grew up listening to 91X; the station helped form my appreciation for alternative music since I was a youngster,” said Adam.  “It's a great feeling working alongside some of the most respected personalities in my hometown.  Sure beats sitting on my thumbs!”
“Adam is a local kid who brings hard work to his passion and knowledge for music,” said 91X Program Director Halloran.  “I cannot wait to tap into his perspective and ideas, and bring San Diego a fresh voice at night on 91X.  By the way, he’s all thumbs.”

91X is owned and operated by Local Media San Diego, LLC, a privately held San Diego-based company. LMSD also operates Z90.3 (XHTZ-FM) and Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM).
