Lee Baby Simms 1944-2015

By Joe Nelson

This information is from Claude Hall, former editor of Vox Jox at Billboard Magazine. SanDiegoRadio.org has chosen to omit rumored cause of death until officially verified, out of respect for his family.

He was a veteran of KRLA, KROQ, and KMET in the 70s. This note is from Claude Hall Lee Baby Simms 1944 - 2015 One of my best friends died yesterday. He was 72 and recovering from cancer. Lee started his radio career at WTMA, Charleston, SC, a Top 40 radio station programmed by George Wilson.  They were friends for life, as was program director Woody Roberts (San Antonio and Hartford). A book titled “Hitbound” about the exploits of Lee Baby Simms and Woody Roberts, is in the final draft by Dr. Robert Weisbuch, former president of Drew University.  Dr. Bob, as he is known by his radio buddies, had visited Lee several times, as well as Woody Roberts. Like most Top 40 disc jockies, Lee worked at several radio stations.  These included KCBQ in San Diego and stations in Los Angeles a…

Question From a Reader

By Joe Nelson
Occasionally I receive email from readers asking questions about radio. This one has me a bit stumped. The memory is not what it once was. Can anyone come through with an assist?

Thanks

Hi Joe,

My name is Philip (last name omitted for privacy), I live in Dallas Fort Worth and I found your website Sandiegoradio dot org

I'm looking for some information regarding the history of XHRM 92,5 FM San Diego when it was a CHR dance oriented radio known as "92.5 San Diego" and "Hot 92.5" in 1989/1990
I used to live in SanDiego between 1986-1990. I attended University of San Diego and graduated from USD in June 1990. I'd recorded several tapes of dance music/airchecks of  XHRM 92.5 back in 1989/1990 and I've converted them to MP3s and posted these recordings on my SoundCloud channel.
I'm trying to see if you might have any info as far as who was associated with XHRM 92.5…

Brooke Landau Moves to the Co-Anchor Chair

Image
By Joe Nelson
San Diego 6 News recently announced their weekend newscasts will move from one anchor to two. They also moved from the upstairs news room to the main desk in the studio.

SanDiegoRadio.org caught up with the newest addition to the broadcasts. Weathercaster Brooke Landau joins Derek Staahl at the news desk. Brooke's station profile can be found HERE

Brooke, thank you for taking the time to talk to us...

Joe: How do you feel about the two new anchor look at SD6?
Brooke: I'm thrilled to see so much growth at San Diego 6 News with our newly expanded  10PM Weekend show from a half hour to an hour. I've been at San Diego 6 for over six years now, and it's a wonderful feeling that my management team has such confidence in my diverse background and skills. At the very start of my career I began as a nightly anchor and spent several years in that role at both the local and national levels. And while I'm still a proud science/weather nerd, it's nice to be a…

Let's Throw 'Hacksaw' a Party

Image
By Joe Nelson
When you think of Sports Talk radio, one name always comes to mind, Lee 'Hacksaw' Hamilton.
Former radio producer Matthew Gulbransen and I decided we need to throw a little party for The Franchise.

I sent several people messages this morning, but I do not have contact info for everyone. Please see the message I sent...

Hello,
Matthew Gulbransen and I did some talking recently and decided we need to show respect to the long career of Lee ‘Hacksaw’ Hamilton. He currently is not on air and not sure if/when he will be again.

We want to host a party, a chance to socialize, show our appreciation to Lee for being a pioneer in the sports talk field. We are shooting for a possible mid-late February (the 21st?) Saturday night, and are inviting you. I’d like to get a head count as soon as possible to reserve the appropriate sized room. Would you be interested in coming? If so, please reply here or email me at SanDiegoRadioJoe@gmail.com

I am also working on a couple sur…

Party Coming!

Image
By Joe Nelson

While golfing Wednesday, Matthew Gulbransen and I hatched an idea. There is a San Diego Radio Legend who is no longer behind the mic.

I cannot reveal who that is but I can say they are labeled as a 'pioneer' in the industry. We will be assembling a party for them and everyone is invited to celebrate his/her career. Stay tuned, this will be fun! The location will be as centralized as possible, most likely Mission Valley. Shooting for mid-February.

Thanks for tuning in!
