KSON To The Rescue

By Joe Nelson

From Chris Turner, KSON:

John & Tammy got a call from a listener Kate who was telling them what a great time they had at the Jason Aldean concert~~and mentioned that they found a man's wedding ring.

John and Tammy aired the call and, off air, got some very specific information about the ring.   About 30 minutes later I'm sitting in my office and I get a call from "Pamela" who says a friend heard John and Tammy talking with someone on air about finding a wedding ring and her husband had lost his at the show.  Got her number, Morning show called Kate and Pamela live on the air (well, taped!!) and asked Pamela to describe the ring and the inscription inside.

She said it was gold band, square diamond with the inscription "all my love" written inside.  Perfect match!

Letter From The Editor

By Joe Nelson
You may have noticed that SanDiegoRadio has been very quiet lately, there are two reasons for that. The first is very simple. Radio is in a slow time right now. That makes the second reason a little bit easier for me. Second reason is my mom has been in declining health and on Monday was placed on hospice.
Joe Nelson, Carol Nelson
It is a very difficult time for me and my family. The last couple weeks have been agonizing and emotional to say the least. With the hospital visits and decisions to be made, plus keeping my kids on an even keel, it's been overwhelming.
I will still continue to give it all I can, it definitely helps when you send me material, but for now, researching on my own will be too difficult for a bit.
I will still continue the monthly SanDiegoRadio Spotlight, breaking news will ALWAYS be here, and am really trying to unveil a new feature to SanDiegoRadio very soon.

Thanks to all those who have reached out, you are all close friends to me. It is especially important during times like this.

Thanks, as always, for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio.org

Guest Column

By Joe Nelson
Last week I suggested if anyone would like to write a guest column expressing their views or ideas on radio, they can have this forum. Here is the first.

David Tanny

There has been a longtime absence of funny music as a regular genre on the San Diego airwaves. The exceptions are
when sometimes they can be found on some of  the morning drive time shows or on some of the AM talkers such as
Rush Limbaugh (where Paul Shanklin's satirical works can be heard).
Yes, we can sometimes hear the funny songs during those times if we're lucky, but how about thinking of
playing them during the other day part hours such as middays and afternoon drive and on the FM side of the dial.
Since about 1997, I've been experiencing the evolution of funny music since the Internet became the place
where new and emerging funny music artists can be discovered at the same time that commercial radio has
decided to take far fewer chances on funny music as a regular part of their playlists. The lyrics are smart,
make commentaries on geek culture, and make satirical jabs at pop music artists and other figures just to name
three.
A whole culture of funny music has evolved over the past two years mostly on the Internet-only side.
There's a 24/7 stream called dementiaradio.org that plays funny music. There's The Fump at fump.com
that features almost 2,000 funny songs you can stream and buy featuring some of the biggest names
in the genre of funny music, aka dementia, named for Dr. Demento (found at drdemento.com).
There's even a weekly Top 20 survey that counts down the most popular funny songs of the week,
and it's been on since January of 2005 when yours truly created The Dementia Top 20, programmed,
and hosted it until 2007 when I retired, and its successor, DJ Particle, has been running the DT20
since then; it's now part of her own show as "Mad Music Top 20 Revenge" where she plays most
of the newer funny songs and counts down the Top 20.
Lastly, but now least, there's another website run by Captain Wayne called madmusic.com where
listeners can stream over 1,600 episodes of funny music shows on demand.
With all of this rich amount of funny music totaling into the low tens of thousands of recordings as
of 2015, as 24 hour funny music format for broadcast radio should be considered as at least an offering
on an HD2 or HD3 sub-channel to test the idea out (also made available on streams via the station's
websites), and if they prove popular, they can graduate onto a main HD1 (and analog) channel.
With geek culture a part of everybody's lives, and there's no sign of Comic Con, Star Trek,
Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, cosplaying, and others fading away anytime soon, radio should take
a chance on a 24/7 funny music format. The listeners buy the same things non-geeks buy: cars,
insurance, etc. etc.
Dementia. The final frontier. What radio station could go where no other has gone before?

Thanks for this, David.

If you are interested in doing the same, email me at SanDiegoRadioJoe@gmail.com

Where Radio and Football Legends Collide

By Joe Nelson
Monday night marked the beginning of the Chargers 2014 football season. There were a few radio personalities out around town, I went to Sycuan Casino where in addition to the football game, Sycuan was hosting an autograph session with several players from the Bolts' past.
L-R: Anthony Miller, Wes Chandler, HOF Charlie Joiner, Lorenzo Neal, Martin Bayless and Billy Ray Smith

While 1090's Scott and BR were broadcasting from the Game Day Sports Bar, the other players shook hands and posed for photos while DSC's Cookie Chainsaw Randolph was the emcee.

Following Scott and BR's show, Billy Ray Smith joined the other players and Scott emceed  the remainder of the event.

After the autograph session concluded, the group moved to the Sports Bar and enjoyed dinner while watching the Chargers game.
A special thanks goes to Scott Kaplan for inviting me to the dinner. It was very surreal being surrounded by the players I grew up watching, including a Hall Of Famer in Charlie Joiner. It was great hearing their takes on the plays on the TV, and hearing stories of their playing days. Thanks Scott!

Thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio.org

By Joe Nelson

Bobby took Ronstadt to task on the following YouTube message which also aired on his morning show 94/9 Mix FM.

My Meeting With Andy Strasberg

By Joe Nelson
While this may not be entirely radio related, it is a part of my life so I think that counts, right?

I had the opportunity to have coffee with Andy Strasberg and discuss my favorite sport, baseball. But it was so much more than that. This man is one of the most intelligent, kind, and generous men around.
Andy worked for the San Diego Padres for 22 years in various roles, most notably marketing.
Growing up a Padres fan, I attended several events around town. It seems each event I told Andy about, he told me that was his idea. I thought that was great! The two events I remember most were being a Jr. Padre, and my mom taking me to The Murph and meeting players like Dravecky and Garvey. My mom enjoyed it too because she really liked Terry Kennedy.
 Dick Williams
 Eric Show
 Steve Garvey
Terry Kennedy
Another event Andy thought up was incredible, mom and I went downtown and standing at the top of a hi-rise building was Kennedy, on the street, surrounded by hundreds of fans was Kurt Bevacqua with a catcher's mitt and NO facemask. Kennedy was dropping baseballs for Bevacqua to catch. See my media partner Gaslamp Ball HERE for a GIF on this fun afternoon.
Andy now has written two books, "Baseball Fantography" and "Fantography - San Diego Baseball".
I do recommend these books, if you are interested, please reach out to Andy on Facebook.
Andy was also friends with MLB great Roger Maris, and still is very close to the Maris family.
Andy with Roger Maris
Andy thanks for your time, and thanks especially for those great memories through the years! I am proud I can now call you 'friend'.

Thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio

Chip Franklin Possibly Headed to the Bay Area

By Joe Nelson
Multiple sources have told SanDiegoRadio that talker Chip Franklin could be on his way to San Francisco.
The former KOGO morning host is reportedly being wooed by KGO 810. Possibly for the 9-Noon slot. Franklin has already been doing fill-in work on KGO, so it would seemingly be a smooth transition.

Franklin was released from KOGO last September after a six year run.

Three More Years for "The Show"

By Joe Nelson

ROCK 105.3's Eddie Pappani contacted SanDiegoRadio announcing his morning program, "The Show" has been extended three more years.

Eddie tells SanDiegoRadio "I am super stoked to have this deal done. KIOZ has been my home for a decade and I couldn't be happier to stay. We have really built a following and want to continue to grow with them. Plus free Chargers tickets."

Ashlee tells us "I am beyond thrilled and grateful to be working with these silly goofs for 3 more years!!! Clear Channel has been so good to me for the past 11 years, better than any of my ex-boyfriends EVER have... I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world!"
Sky said "I am thrilled that The Show has signed a multi-year deal with KIOZ. The city of San Diego can rest well knowing that I will continue to keep you up to date each morning on all the latest news with my lack of journalistic skills and inability to pronounce most words! It's really a win-win for all involved."

25th Annual AIDS Walk & Run

By Joe Nelson
Gary Lee (KSON) e-mailed me and asked that I run this, of course I will!

My daughters, granddaughters and I are once again participating in AIDS Walk & Run San Diego.  This year's event will be Saturday, September 27th. As always, we will be walking in memory of my brother, Stan.  I promised my brother that I would do everything I could to make sure others don't suffer like he did.  Please help support my efforts to raise money for critical services for those living with HIV and AIDS across San Diego County.

If you can help out with a donation, it would be greatly appreciated.  If you would like to join our team, we'd love to have you on board.
My family and I are so proud to be a part of the 25th Annual AIDS Walk & Run and thank you for your support.
