The San Diego County Fair and SanDiegoRadio Partner-Up

By Joe Nelson
SanDiegoRadio is proud to announce a partnership with The San Diego County Fair! The 2014 Fair's theme will be "The Fab Fair"

The fair has always had a strong connection to radio stations in San Diego, so the fit seemed natural. Whether it's a simple tent with promotions staff, live broadcasts, or even Sam Bass doing his daily wine tastings in the San Diego Infield Pavilion in the infield.
The concert schedule on the Heineken Grandstand Stage already looks outstanding, with even more to be announced.  Joe Nichols, Darius Rucker and Huey Lewis & The News to name a few.

I want to incorporate as much radio as I can in this. I welcome your emails on any events/appearances/anything you would like to promote. My email is SanDiegoRadioJoe@gmail.com

The fair's main page can be found HERE
The Concert listing for the Grandstand Stage is HERE

Thanks for tuning in!

March 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The March edition of the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features 'The Greener', Gene Knight!

Gene, thanks for taking the time for www.SanDiegoRadio.org

JN: Gene, what is your current position and/or title?
GK: I am Music Director and on-air host at Magic 92.5 (XHRM)
At Brockton Villa

JN: What are your favorite parts of your job?
GK: It's not a job - Joe. It's more like fun! My favorite part is definitely the people I work with, this group of radio people is like no other! From our receptionist Joi, to our PD R-Dub!, to our GM Gregg Wolfson and everyone else here, including the great people across the hall at Z90 and 91X, I've never seen such a group of radio lovers in my entire life! The vibe here reminds me of another awesome radio station, B-100, San Diego's FM, which was created and made famous by our PD Bobby Rich.
The Greener, with Huey Lewis

**Editor's Note: You can visit Bobby Rich's GREAT online B-100 right HERE**

JN: Who are your all time favorite musical artists?
GK: I love anything Motown, especially The Four Tops, who I got to see twice in concert here, in San Diego. But I like anything from New Order to George Strait to Shaggy and (Jamaican reggae artist) Lady Saw. I could go on and on... I have over 4,000 songs on my MP3 player!
December Nights

JN: And your current favorite(s)?
GK: My wife Sally turned me on to 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke, it's a fun song!

JN: Tell me about your personal side.
GK: I have been married for over 20 years to the most wonderful woman in the world, and we now have a beautiful little boy who just turned 4. I hope you can meet Cristian someday, Sally too!
Broadcasting by the water
JN: What are your favorite restaurants around town?
GK: We think the best pizza around here is from San Filippo's in La Mesa. Indian: Ashoka The Great, and Himalayan Cuisine. Mexican: Rubios and El Torito.

JN: What are your movie interests?
GK: If we watch a DVD at home, it would probably be more likely a TV series like The Sopranos, or NYPD Blue. Our movie viewing is now highly influenced by Cristian, so we're looking at things like Monsters, Inc., Toy Story, and Cars.
Kids News Day

JN: Do you have any hobbies?
GN: Love taking care of plants in our yard, especially the palms. We love to travel, and I want to be sure to body surf anyplace we go that has a great beach! I also collect radio memorabilia, and of course, being a music lover, 45's, LPs, and CDs!

JN: What are your favorite parts of San Diego?
GK: That's a tough one, Joe, every neighborhood of San Diego is beautiful, and charming in its own way. For the beach we do like Coronado, Del Mar and La Jolla. There's great dining in Kensington, Miramar, and downtown. We love to go to the Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma.

JN: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
GK: I'd just like to thank my lucky stars that I've had such a great career in San Diego radio. I am blessed because radio is what I love, and San Diego is where I love to be on the radio!

Gene, thanks so much for taking your time for this Spotlight!
Thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio.org.

100.7 JACK-FM Reinvents Weekday Lineup

By Joe Nelson

JACK-FM is adding The Johnjay and Rich Show to afternoon drive, weekdays, (3pm – 7pm) March 17th!

This just in! The Johnjay and Rich Show will be returning to the San Diego airwaves starting Monday, March 17th, hosting afternoon drive on100.7 JACK-FM.  The Legendary DSC Show will continue to lead off the day from 6am-10am, followed by long time JACK-FM personality Sara Perry in mid-days.  The Johnjay and Rich Show will be customized daily, tailored for San Diego with fresh content to complement the best of their daily syndicated show. “Rich and I spent so much time in San Diego and we love it.   We LOVE JACK-FM and LOVE the DSC.  We are ready to get back on in America’s Finest City doing afternoons,” remarks JohnJay Van Es.

Currently The Johnjay and Rich Show originates from Phoenix to 11 U.S. markets, however, JACK-FM will be the first market airing the show in afternoon drive.  Johnjay and Rich both have deep roots in San Diego. “My favorite moment ever in radio just happened last week when Dave Rickards called and welcomed us to JACK-FM,” said Rich Berra.  “I grew up producing for them and there is NO other SHOW in radio that has my respect like Dave’s.  It’s an honor for us to be in the same building as him.  We have to really start getting our act together.” Johnjay started his radio career in San Diego and as stated Rich Berra was the producer on The DSC Show for over ten years before launching his own morning show in Dallas. “Rich and I being back on the same team is a pleasant surprise for both of us,” said Dave Rickards of The DSC Show.   TheJohnjay and Rich Show also aired on KHTS, Channel 93.3, in morning drive for just over a year in 2009-2010 and were top five in major adult and female demos.

Program director Mike O’Reilly said on the addition that “it’s about making 100.7 JACK-FM in San Diego a unique, daily addiction multiple times a day.” Along with Johnjay and Rich, Kyle, Joey Bradfisch, Shannon and Producer Bill round out The Johnjay and Rich Show’s creative, upbeat crew.

“As compelling content continues to drive Radio consumption, we are expanding the unique JACK-FM brand of ‘PLAYING WHAT WE WANT,’ to include a wider variety of entertainment options for the San Diego Radio listener. The addition of The Johnjay and Rich Show to our lineup is a critical piece to that evolution,” said Gina Landau, VP/General Manager of the KFMB Radio Stations.

From #MeanTweets to War of the Roses to interviewing today’s hottest stars such as One Direction, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and more, The Johnjay and Rich Show will be bringing quality entertainment and star power to America’s Finest City. EVP of partnerships for Paul Anderson Media Agent, Inc. Mark Kopelman added, “From the moment we began working with KFMB they stood out as a first-class organization and a station that would support and continue to help the JJ&R's network grow. We could not have picked a better partner to bring JJ&R back to San Diego…Simply put…They Get It."

Shotgun Tom Update

By Joe Nelson
I had been requested to keep this under wraps until now.
Shotgun Tom Kelly went in for his semi-annual check up and the doctors discovered blockage in one of his arteries. Saturday he underwent a triple bypass and everything went very well.
He is now recovering at a hospital (location was requested to remain quiet). I am told he is feeling great and should be back on the air in two weeks.
Get well real soon, Shotgun, SoCal already misses your voice.

Bromo talks to SanDiegoRadio

By Joe Nelson
As I reported Thursday morning, Dave 'Bromo' Abromowitz from 101.5 KGB has accepted a position in Fargo, ND. SanDiegoRadio sat with him and discussed his decision to move, his past and what he hopes for the future.
Joe: Bromo, congratulations on the new gig, this is huge. Tell me a little about it.
Bromo: It's 103.9 The Truck, with Jim, Ben and Alex and the format is Country. They called me in September and did what they had to do and made it work. They really make me feel like I will be an asset to the show. I'm really looking forward to getting back into the game, especially with these two creative guys.

J: Country? How does that work for you?
B: My experience of country music stems from the days my dad would feed me doses of Roy Acuff.

J: What will your role be?
B: I will be producer, plus on air.

J: How do you feel about the move?
B: I am moving because it's been my dream to be full time, in mornings for four years now.

J: How do you feel the transition will go?
B: I am already overwhelmed and completely flattered that they've taken 50% of the pressure off of me by taking care of the flight, getting  me a place to live, and finding me a car.

J: What are your goals when you arrive?
B: Very simple, to remain strong in my sobriety, I will find a 12-step program right away, I will entertain, be who I am, and to start a new life far away from the pressures of my old job (he was working in collections), a job I hated, but I did it. And I will adopt two kittens.

J: I think pretty much everyone knows you have been sober for five years now, things are looking great for you, talk to me about that.
B: Without a doubt, I would not be here if it were not for Coe Lewis, she and her boyfriend Mitch are the reason I am here. When I say here, I don't mean in radio, I mean here on Earth... alive! When I first moved to Coe's house, we found a baby rabbit, we tried to rescue it, nurture it. Ironically, I was like that rabbit. I was a man who needed help, Coe and Mitch provided me just that. Mitch was my cigar smoking partner, he kept me grounded with long talks of the disease, he kept me sober. Those two did everything for me, and it will be hard to leave them.

J: Do you have any thoughts on KGB?
B: I have so many memories of KGB, there are too many to list. I feel like I am the luckiest guy around. When I can start a new life in Fargo, following my dream, doing what I love. BUT here is the great part, I have been granted permission to continue my weekend shifts in San Diego on KGB! I am very happy about that.

J: You spent 10 years with the Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw Show, tell me about those days (Bromo's face lights up!)
B: Let me tell you something about Dave Rickards, he brought out the best in me, he realized I had certain qualities including making people laugh, and I will never forget how some people recognize me around town.  He made all of this possible. Dave was my mentor without a doubt. I also realized how I can make an impact, like when at an AA meeting, a newcomer comes to me and says 'I was all spun-out, Bromo, I saw you speak and you inspire me'. I will never forget that.

***Editor's addition***
I reached out to Dave Rickards, and he had this to say: "Bromo and I had hundreds of hours of great fun together.   Work and personal often blurred lines because we loved our jobs and our hanging out so much. Truly one of my best friends, and many of my favorite times were he and I being idiots together, which we excelled at. Bromo took the show to places of ridiculousness and hilarity that I could never have imagined.   He's a brilliant comic performer.   Period.

DJR"

J: Do you have anything else?
B: Yes, I want to send a huge thank you to Shauna Moran and John Peake. Without them, this opportunity would not be possible. They have treated me with nothing but trust and respect.

Thanks Bromo, best wishes on your new adventure!
-Joe

Bromo has been added to the morning show of 'Jim and Alex' on 103.9 The Truck. (Jim Babbit is formerly from San Diego as well.)

Lineup Changes at KIOZ

By Joe Nelson
Starting today, the new lineup for Rock 105.3 is as follows:

6AM-10AM: The Show (With new member Tylhor 'Thor' Dodd)
10AM-11AM: Nonstop Music Hour
11AM-3PM: DZL
3PM-7PM: A.D.
7PM-Midnight: Marty

ROCK 105.3 - Thor Joins The Show

By Joe Nelson
KIOZ Rock 105.3 adds Tylhor Dodd, AKA 'Thor', to The Show succeeding Boston Rob as he moves back to Boston.
Eddie Pappani tells San DiegoRadio "Thor was our intern for 2 years and then moved on to be the afternoon producer for XTRA Sports 1360 on The Drive." "He has been there for almost two years as well. He has been doing weekends on Rock. He has filled in several times when one of The Show members is out. He is a natural fit with our show. Very funny and talented. We have always wanted to add him to the mix full time, but never had the chance until now. I believe our show won't miss a beat" "Also, Thor has such a goofy, unique outlook on life, that he will add so much comedy to the show"

Tylhor spoke with SanDiegoRadio and shared his thoughts... "When I quit a full time job with benefits and decent pay to become a promotions intern with Clear Channel almost 4 years ago I never thought this would happen. There are so many people that helped me get this dream job.

With out my parents and sister supporting me and making sure I didn't quit when times got tough I wouldn't be here.

Obviously Eddie, Sky and Ashlee have not only been mentors but have become like family to me. Working with them is going to be so much fun and is a dream come true. I couldn't ask for an easier transition then working with three pros who have been together for 10 years. I just hope I can help them make the show the best it can be everyday!

I'm amped and I can't wait to get started!"
