February 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The February 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features 107.9 Mountain Country's Chris Torrick

Chris, thanks for taking the time for www.SanDiegoRadio.org
What is your current position/title?

Station Manager/Ops Manager/PD/Whatever gets thrown at me lol!

What are your favorite parts of the job?

There are so many positives to what I get to do, I think
I would be here all day. I work with some incredibly talented
people that all make our LPFM a pretty special place to be. I
like the idea that we have complete control over content and
music. We are also really fortunate to have a nice facility
in Alpine. Most radio people are a little shocked when they see
our studios.

Who are your all time favorite musical artists?

U2, Ronnie Milsap, Johnny Cash, r.e.m., Radney Foster, English Beat, Hank Williams, Talk Talk, Wayne Toups, Dwight Yoakam. I'm pretty much an 80's alt geek that loves Country, Cajun Zydeco and a good singer/songwriter.

   And your current favorite?

We started playing a song from Miranda Lambert a few weeks ago called "Automatic" and I cant get enough of it. I'm loving what is coming out of the U2 camp and their new record. I've also been listening to the Hymmed Again projects from Bart Millard. Locally I've been digging Graham Nancarrow and Sara Petit.

Tell us how you got in to radio -

I got in to radio when a music career as a kid fell apart.
I had been playing music in local hayrides and bluegrass
festivals in Arkansas and Moved to San Diego for the
first time in 1981. Things escalated for me here after someone
saw me playing music at a place called Speakeasy Pizza in El Cajon.
A few days later I was visiting with a reporter from The Daily
Californian and I was featured on their TIP (teen information page).
That got in to the hands of Frankie Laine and after a visit with
him I was connected with Rock Kreutzer at "Big Oak Ranch" in Harbison
Canyon. I started appearing there with the house band and Rock was
sneaking me in the back door at "The Palomino Club" in North
Hollywood for showcases. It was at the Palomino where I played
a party for the cast and crew of the series "Dukes Of Hazzard".
The music career came to a halt when my manager was arrested for the second degree murder in the death of his son-in-law. I sold my storage unit full of PA equipment, exited the music business and never looked back.

   What are your favorite restaurants?

Bud's Louisiana Café, Alpine Taco Shop, Mardi Gras Cafe, Village Pizzaria,
In and Out Burger, Filippi's - Little Italy

 What are your movie interests?

I've become a documentary dweeb of sorts. Last one I watched "Good Ole Rita" on Netflix and loved it. I just finished "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" and am trying to get in to the whole juicing thing. Care for a Spinach,Kale, Carrot & Apple juice combo? Another movie that stands out is "The Way Home". It's a Korean film. My Wife and I had 3 exchange students from South Korea for a year and they turned us on to it. Anything music and film related I like "That Thing You Do", "Music And Lyrics","U2 360".

   Do you have any hobbies?

My family is my hobby. My wife Pamela and I celebrate 15 Years together
next month. I've got 2 incredible kids - Grayson turns 9 in August and
Aubrey just turned 7. They keep me busy when the radio station doesn't.

What are your favorite parts of the city?

Any place I can go by trolley. I have been itching to take a day off and
just go riding on the trolley and explore. We love going to Coronado as
a family. There is something about that beach that says "disconnect". Sea
World is a regular stop for us. It's not to hard to find something cool to
do in Americas' Finest City.

Chris, thanks for taking your time for SanDiegoRadio.org!

Chris Cantore - Back on The Air

By Joe Nelson
If you remember, I mentioned two familiar voices are returning to San Diego radio. Well, one of those voices just landed at FM 94/9.

Welcome back to radio, Chris Cantore!

Cantore will join the Lincoln Financial Media team on weekends and also doing fill-in work. He is no stranger to Morning show host Steven Woods as they both co-host a podcast "Cantore + Woods" (Photo Below)

Chris has been and will continue to be Director of Lifestyle and Entertainment at UT San Diego. Previously Cantore has worked at Star 100.7, Q106, a long run at 91X, and most recently 102.1 KPRI.

In an exclusive interview today, Chris tells SanDiegoRadio... "With a solid, committed crew in place -- including two of my best friends, Woods and Hilary -- I'm beyond stoked to join the team at FM 94/9.  Radio always holds a special place in my heart and I welcome the opportunity to plug back in, on a station i respect, format i love, and city i adore."

Woods tells me... "It goes without saying that I'm beyond excited to have Chris Cantore join the 94/9 family. I have zero doubts that he'll be embraced by our listeners, as this has been his track record for many years in San Diego.  Our station just got a lot stronger today and having one of my best pals here with me, is going to be incredible.  He's been like a brother to me since I moved here to San Diego and I'm so stoked to be working with him.  Now…let's get in some trouble"

SanDiegoRadio will sit down with Chris very soon and get his full insight on this new venture.

Congratulations, Chris!
-Joe
Thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio

Boston Rob Speaks to SanDiegoRadio

By Joe Nelson
Following the announcement today that 105.3 The Show's Boston Rob is leaving San Diego, he had this to say to SanDiegoRadio... (It is very candid)

"Ten years ago a whales vagina welcomed me in, I impregnated it with my dreams and together a career was born. I'm wicked blessed to have worked with some truly epic radio personalities. Rock 105.3 has been my home away from home for 10 years (literally when I fist began and was homeless I allegedly maybe spent a night or three in the building).. Sink shower! I've learned so much (especially not to drink and drive). Thank you San Diego for making a Masshole feel like fam... we had some wicked good times. A wicked big Thank you to The Show and Rock 105.3.. Thank you so very much."

"I'm wicked happy to start my new gig back home in the greatest city in the history of cities, Boston. This is a dream come true"

"Like Will Hunting said "I got to go see about a job"... Maybe I misquoted that but it feels right. And instead of coming out West, I'm going back East. Whoa - this is kind of like Reverse Good Will Hunting"

Good luck Rob.
Thanks for your time

The Show Loses Boston Rob

By Joe Nelson
In an announcement just moments ago, Rock 105.3's morning show revealed Boston Rob is leaving The Show.
As it was announced on-air, SanDiegoRadio had an exclusive interview with The Show's Eddie Pappani. Eddie says " It's a bitter sweet day for me. On one hand it's such a bummer to lose a talent like Rob. I helped discover this kid 10 years ago. We have been through everything together. On and off the air. But I know his heart belongs in Boston. It always has. I know how happy he will be, returning to the homeland. So I can only be happy for him." Eddie continues "It's been a wild, fun ride with Boston Rob. The guy is so talented and funny. The people of Boston are lucky to have him. But, The Show must go on!"

Thanks for your time, Eddie. Good luck, Boston Rob!

Of course that means there will be an addition to The Show. Who will it be? Eddie said that will be announced soon, and SanDiegoRadio will have the exclusive.

SanDiegoRadio Spends a Day With SD 6

By Joe Nelson

As I sometimes delve into TV news for the column, I was thinking it may be interesting to see how a TVnews story is assembled, SanDiegoRadio spent Sunday with SD6 reporter Gary Buzel as he covered the final push for votes in the campaign for the next mayor of San Diego. The special election is this Tuesday. At the time of this posting, there was only a one point separation between the two candidates, with Faulconer in the lead.

Sunday afternoon, I met up with Gary just as he was leaving the station, he packed up the news truck with his equipment and we headed to our first location of the day.

Location #1: David Alvarez Campaign Headquarters
As we arrived, volunteers were seen loading their cars with Alvarez yard signs by the dozens. We headed upstairs and found the call center. Approximately 20 volunteers were manning the phones, drumming up support for their chosen future hopeful. I heard both English and Spanish on the phones talking to the voters.

David Alvarez, fresh off of receiving an endorsement from President Obama on Saturday, entered the room, dressed in a three piece suit and sporting a City Council pin. Alvarez shook our hands and made his way to the volunteer tables, patting them on the backs thanking them for their hard work and time.

Gary had his camera set and it was time for the interview.

After a few quick questions, Alvarez moved to a phone and made a call to a voter, personally asking for a vote. I could not hear the other end obviously, but he seemed pleased with the call.

I had a chance to meet David and I got a photo with him,  and was handed a David Alvarez election button.

Gary grabbed some footage "B Roll" of the volunteers and we were finished there.

Location #2: Kevin Faulconer Fundraiser
This was a bit more formal than the Alvarez camp. Held in the back yard of a private residence in the college area, although we were not allowed into the back yard, I could see tables with beverages and food, supporters milling about listening to an out of view Kevin Faulconer telling of his ideas for the city and answering questions. As the sun was setting, we were hoping it would conclude soon so we had some good light for the shot.

Sure enough, Kevin came to the front yard and greeted us, dressed looking slightly more relaxed than his opponent. we held the interview and I again got a photo with him. Kevin gave Gary his own City Councilman pin from his shirt and Gary can be seen wearing that same pin on Sunday night's SD 6 News and can be found in the news video below.

Location #3: Kevin Faulconer's Call Center

Two huge tables were jam packed with volunteers calling voters in a tucked away building in the Morena area, calls were flooding in as everyone had a phone in their hand. Gary shot some video and talked to a couple people and we were out of there.

Location #4: Sipz Vegetarian Cafe
Gotta eat sometime, right? Spring Rolls and Broccoli and 'Beef' Bowl for me.

Location #5: SD 6 TV Station
So, this is where the magic happens, writing, editing... Gary plants himself at a desk and pulls out all the audio and video footage he took today, on a memory stick! What used to be film can now fit into a pocket. He fires up his computer and begins putting the story together. First step, write the story. Gary writes it all, everything he will say in the 10PM broadcast and even what the anchors will say as they throw it to him.

Next, Gary moves to a small studio where he performs audio tracking, the non-live audio portion of the telecast that can be heard as the viewer is watching footage.

Video editing is the next step, assembling the puzzle of all the footage he has chosen for the telecast, adding his audio, the story is nearing completion.

It's less than an hour til the newscast and Gary heads to make-up. Mostly to tone down the lights that shine so bright in the studio.

Next up... the 10PM News. Oh yes, this was all done over a 6 hour span... for a 2 1/2 minute segment!

You can see Gary's story on the SD 6 page HERE

Thanks for letting me tag along, Gary. Very informative!
