July 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The July 2014 edition of the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Z90's Sarah Beebe!
What is your current position/title?
I'm beyond thrilled to say I'm the Co Host of "Morton In The Morning" on Jammin Z90 XHTZ with Rick Moorten & DJ DRock!

What are your favorite parts of the job?
Every morning I get to walk into a room and work with 2 men I consider family, who make me laugh all morning long and make work an enjoyable environment every single day.  I love the fact that I enjoy waking up everyday to work with them!

Who are your all time favorite musical artists?
The name Sarah Beebe goes hand in hand with the name Britney Spears!  Anyone who knows me knows that Britney Spears is my all time favorite artist.  I've spent years defending my loyalty to Britney so I'm used to the comments that come with admitting I'm a Britney fan!  But I still enjoy every new song, seeing her in Vegas or seeing her on the cover of a new magazine just as much as I did when I was 12.  It's fun to still have an artist that excites me & brings as much joy into my life as Britney does!  Besides Britney, I'm all over the place - Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, David Guetta, Carrie Underwood, Tupac, Snoop Dogg (and Snoop Lion!) and since I did work at a classic rock station forever Guns N Roses is def a fav!

And your current favorite?
Oops I think I just answered that one above lol

Tell me about your personal side
Well I've been married for 3 years to the only person I've ever said "I Love You" to - Chip Beebe, we have quite a handful of a 2 year old named Shane who is the love of my life and 2 even bigger handfuls named Hef & Paisley - the Puggles.  I'm one of 6 girls & my mom still lives in the house I grew up in which is awesome!  My mom, sisters and I often travel to Haiti to support an orphanage started by our church which is one of our strongest bonds as a family.  My dad passed away in 2012 but I show my son his picture every day to try and keep his name & face familiar!  We call him Poppy :)  I'm totally an animal person, I can't watch any movie with any animals in it or I cry like a sobbing baby!  I definitely wear rose colored glasses and try to find the positive in every situation.

What are your favorite restaurants?
Fidel's in Solana Beach!  First place we take any friends or family visiting from out of town.  I'm also a sucker for The Broken Yolk in Pacific Beach - lots of fun memories there and I love brunch & mimosas!  V's donuts in Cardiff has the best donuts I've ever had in my life!!!

What are your movie interests?
Nothing scary or too intense!  Light hearted comedy is my fav!  Anchorman, The Little Mermaid, The Sandlot, Elf, Nightmare Before Christmas, Horrible Bosses, Top Gun - I know I'm forgetting some really good ones!  Oh well...

Do you have any hobbies?
My husband Chip & I are absolutely obsessed with scuba diving!  We even dove with 12ft sharks on our honeymoon after chumming the water.  So intense, total adrenaline rush & such a freakin cool experience!  And no, we were not in a cage!  He also shaped a paddle board for us so I've fallen in love with paddle boarding and I'm getting pretty good at building train sets with my lil man Shane.  I'm sure I'll turn into a Lego pro one day soon ;)

What are your favorite parts of the city?
Take me to any beach in San Diego and I'm a happy girl!  Mission Beach & Pacific Beach hold such a special place in my heart.  That's where I first lived in San Diego, met my husband and spent some of the best years of my life.  I also love downtown.  Anytime I go to a Padres game I try and take a minute to take in the view of the city.  I LOVE San Diego.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Just that I feel so incredibly blessed to have found my dream job with my dream Host & Producer at a company I couldn't love any more.  I don't take it for granted for even a moment & thank God every day that I've found my amazing husband & work in this city where I get to raise my son.  It really doesn't get any better than San Diego & I just hope that I'm able to make someone's morning just a little bit better every day on their way to work.  If I can help people get through morning rush hour with a smile on their face, it suddenly makes that 3am alarm clock a lot less painful!

Thanks for your time, Sarah!

A Legend Says Goodbye

By Joe Nelson
SanDiegoRadio has learned Lee 'Hacksaw' Hamilton is leaving BCA - The Might 1090.
Lee says the station has 'decided to end our working relationship' and he is on to "New Horizons".

I know growing up in this town I have seen a lot of sports talk show hosts come and go, but for me, Lee was a pioneer of sports talk radio. I enjoyed his Best 15 Minutes in Radio and his catchphrases. I would run into him all over town and he was always generous with his time.

Best of luck, Saw. You are one of the best!

You can follow him on his website HERE

Madison Keith Wants to Make a Difference - And Needs Your Help

By Joe Nelson
Of course radio is important to me. But what is more important? The people IN radio, and the family and friends around them. Unfortunately things don't always go as smooth as we would hope and life throws us curveballs. Such is the case with our good friend Madison Keith, formerly of 102.1 KPRI.

Madison reached out to me this morning and asked me to spread the word on something that is very close to him. I thought his words would be best, so here is the conversation.

When I lost my cousin Gayle to breast cancer, I thought, I wish I could have done something… When I read that musician Warren Zevon had terminal cancer, I called his best friend and music legend Danny Goldberg and asked … what can I do?
When one of my listeners’ children was slowly succumbing to cancer, I spent every chance I could to have that child come in to the radio station… We’d hang out and talk… TJ had good and bad days… Bravest kid ever… I’ll never forget him…
When my friend Loren Nancarrow fought cancer I was able to let him know that he was an inspiration to me… So was his entire family… He helped me see that you can use this weird celebrity status to do worlds of good… After he passed, I was lucky enough to be involved in a big fundraiser for Loren…
When I was on the radio and someone had a cancer benefit I’d always open the microphone to help them promote it…
Here’s what I’ve learned from all of these things…
CANCER … scares everyone… it’s hard to talk about, it’s hard to get your head around your mortality, and it’s hard to get funding for projects that are attached to it… because it’s scary…
I totally understand…
My best friend in the world, Michael Gross, has cancer… two kinds. He’s also a fighter… a philosopher of sorts and a visionary…
The thing about Michael is he’s an artist… His influences on the world of pop culture have touched every area of media…
As a young man, he was art director of the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City… He worked in New York City as an Art Director for some big magazines but his legacy in print will always be NATIONAL LAMPOON MAGAZINE… where he crafted the output of some of the best and funniest lunatics in the world and made us laugh… he turned to the movies where he created a cult masterpiece as the art director of the movie HEAVY METAL… and then GHOSTBUSTERS… (he designed the no-GHOSTS logo…) and made Mr. Staypuft a reality… That movie inspired today’s movie makers and comedic actors and gave them a license they’d never had before…

Michael teaches people to see in different ways… and the world is better for it…
We do an art workshop together and when we found out about Michael’s disease, we drew images of our hands FLIPPING THE BIRD… (F**K cancer…) because cancer sucks… And we wanted to turn that art into something special… And it’s now become a huge art project that has been joined by some of the greatest artists in America today… And we want to do something that will make a difference… Because we can. And that’s where we need you…
We need money to make that happen… Not a lot… And once our project is set up and rolling it will take on a life of it’s own that will help people… The project is called You can find the links here to the KICKSTARTER PAGE, the flipCANCER website and flipCANCER FaceBook Page.
If you are capable of making even the smallest donation to our KICKSTARTER fundraising campaign, I will be truly in your debt. (A KICKSTARTER campaign is used to crowd-source many people and acquire funding.) Even giving up a STARBUCKS latte for one day will make a huge difference…

Any donation, large or small, will go a long way. Please be my helper, partner, and campaigner for this project.
Please feel free to spread the word by sharing my story and link. I need you to help me help people. Thanks for being my friend and for your support over all these years.
I'm truly blessed, Madison

Madison, I am inspired by this. My family and friends have been victims of cancer and it totally sucks! You can be assured I will be making a donation. Best of luck!

A SanDiegoRadio Shout-Out

By Joe Nelson
My true personality is that I like to lay low, stay under the radar. But when it comes to radio events, I suppose I like to be recognizable to some extent. I am not sure why, but I do like to be consistent.
I primarily wear two hats, a 1998 San Diego Padres Navy Blue Cap with the World Series Logo, and recently added a 1984 replica Padres cap.
I only get my hats from one store, "Sports Palace". Located right next to Petco Park's Western Metal Supply Building, Sports Palace offers tons of sports apparel and are very reasonable in price. Now, you may be wondering how this all applies to a radio column... Not only are the owners big sports fans, but also huge fans of local radio!
The owner is a really nice guy and very knowledgeable on his merchandise.
This is on my wish list!
If you find yourself in the area, stop in and check them out!
Thanks for tuning in to!
