Morning Show Changes

By Joe Nelson

This past week we saw John & Tammy (KSON) get re-upped for two more years. Then comes the news that had been coming for seems like months, Chris Cantore taking over the morning shift at KPRI on July 7.

Well, it's not over yet, there is still one more in the bag. It involves a morning show. Who is it? Are they coming? Going? Sticking around longer? I know, such a tease.

Stay tuned as early to mid-week I will have the details.

Thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

By Joe Nelson
Last night when I ran the latest ratings, I noticed it was incomplete. Here is an explanation from someone 'in the know':
"Nielsen Audio is having problems and some stations were omitted. They promise to have fixed soon and all the numbers will become available."

Thanks for your understanding, it was out of my control.

I enjoy doing SanDiegoRadio a ton, however it does cost me time and money (gas, camera upkeep, etc). I do not get paid a dime for doing this so I though this would be a discreet way of keeping the wheels turning.

Thanks!

KPRI Name Program Director

By Joe Nelson

(From All Access)
COMPASS RADIO GROUP Triple A KPRI/SAN DIEGO names RESONATE HAWAII/KONA-HILO, HI OM/PD MATT STONE for PD/afternoon duties. MATT STONE replaces HALEY JONES who recently left for PD duties at EMMIS Triple A KGSR/AUSTIN and will be in place MONDAY, JULY 7th.

STONE previously worked in the SAN DIEGO market as the APD/MD of KSCF (SOPHIE 103.7) prior to running the RESONATE HAWAII cluster. His experience also includes stops at KRUZ/SANTA BARBARA, CA; KBBY/VENTURA-OXNARD, CA; WTMT/ASHVILLE, NC; WRRX/PENSACOLA, FL; WGMR/STATE COLLEGE, PA; and WSMS/COLUMBUS-STARKVILLE-WEST POINT, MS.

In making the announcement, COMPASS RADIO GROUP Co-Owner ROBERT HUGHES commented, "MATT STONE caught our attention right away, and not only did he survive every test in a rigorous hiring process, he distinguished himself with humor, creativity, insight, optimism, and energy. The fact that MATT has been in this market as a recent competitor of ours means he knows KPRi and the SAN DIEGO market. That gave him an advantage that ultimately tipped this decision in his favor.

Co-Owner JONATHAN SCHWARTZ added, "KPRi is celebrating our 18th year as one of AMERICA’sleading Adult Rock radio stations. We like the way MATT understands the format, the market, the station, and the values that underlie our commitment to local independent broadcasting. He’s full of fresh ideas, ready for the challenge, and unafraid to step out and be different."

MATT STONE commented, "I could not be any happier or excited to be joining BOB, JONATHAN and the very talented staff already in place at KPRi. I feel very fortunate to be given the opportunity to play such a pivotal role at this amazing station. I am looking forward to hitting the ground running."

Z90's Big Bus is a Big Deal

By Joe Nelson
R Dub! (Director of Programming), Kat San Andres (Music Director), Tre (Assistant PD and Afternoons)

XHTZ Jammin’ Z90 in San Diego welcomes the return of its biggest promotional vehicle ever, the “Big Bus”! Back in the 90’s, the 50-foot bus was a familiar sight throughout San Diego County and cruised around in its colorful enormity turning heads and showing up at station and community events… and sometimes, at competitors’ events! The Big Bus was sold off in the late ‘90’s when new station owners cut related costs, but problem solved when R Dub!, Program Director of Jammin’ Z90, bought a new tour bus to use for his nationally syndicated program, Sunday Night Slow Jams.  Earlier this year, Sunday Night Slow Jams and Jammin’ Z90 inked a partnership to use the bus locally for the radio station.  Now…The Big Bus is back in business for Jammin’ Z90 and San Diegans are excited!

May-ish 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The May 2014 edition of the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features ENERGY's AJ Machado!
AJ, thanks for taking the time for www.SanDiegoRadio.org

What is your current position/title? Host of "The AJ Show" weekday mornings on Energy 103.7

What are your favorite parts of the job? The variety of types of content. One minute I'm bantering with my crew about our lives, the next we're doing a contest, the next we're interviewing somebody..it never gets old. I also love the connection with our audience...I think it's completely unique to radio. When someone tells me "I feel like I know you" they aren't saying they know my character, they know me. I love that.

Who are your all time favorite musical artists? So many different ones for so many reason. I'll say this, I think the artist that we identify most with are the ones we anted to be when we were teenagers and I definitely wanted to be in the Beastie Boys.

And your current favorite? I'm on a Top 40 station and I actually thing pop music is going through a fun phase right now. I grew up listening to my parents Motown music (and grew to love it) so it's fun to see that Old School sound come back with Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Pharrel etc.

Tell me about your personal side. I'm happily married with to amazing daughters and to awesome dogs. I've lived in San Diego since 2001.

What are your favorite restaurants? Again, SO many answer for so many reasons so I'll narrow it down to my personal area of expertise: Sandwiches. The top 5 sandwich spots in our county are Antonelli's Deli, Deviliscious Food Truck, BHM Italian, Crossroads Deli and Hungry Bear Sub Shop.

What are your movie interests? I'm a geek so anything with superheroes, cyborgs or wizards is gonna get my attention. I love action movies as well and I actually get pretty caught up on documentaries on Netflix. Oh, and who doesn't love a good comedy.

Do you have any hobbies? I've praticed martial arts most of my life. I currently train in Jeet Kune Do, Kali and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Rebellion Academy and Muay Thai at Art of 8. I'm also a runner and love doing races, obstacle courses and mud runs all over the county!

What are your favorite parts of the city? Of course I love the beaches...all of them! As a dog lover I also appreciate all of the dog parks and even dog beaches around the county! Is there anything else you'd like to share? If anyone who listens to my show is reading this THANK YOU, I'll never be able to fully express you much I appreciate being a part of your morning!!

Thanks for your time, AJ!!
