January 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson

Gary Lee - January 2014 Spotlight

The January 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Lincoln Financial Media's Gary Lee

Gary, thanks for taking the time for
What is your current position/title?

Overnight, weekends and fill-in jock for KSON and Public Affairs Director for KSON, Easy 98.1 and FM 94/9

What are your favorite parts of the job?

Is that what you call what I do?  Actually, I’d have to say I love every aspect of the job.  As Public Affairs Director, I host “Living Better In San Diego,” a weekly public affairs show.  It’s great to be able to feature so many different organizations that are doing so much to help others in San Diego.  I’ve met some really great people too as a result.

Who are your all time favorite musical artists?

Wow…being a product of the 60s, I’m still very much a fan of that era.  My favorites include The Beatles…who I saw in NY in 1966…The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Traffic, just to name a few.  There were so many great bands back then.

And your current favorite?

Kanye West…oh wait, hell hasn’t frozen over yet!  I have to be honest, I still mainly listen to the classics from the 60s and 70s.  I do, however, like Kacey Musgraves and some of the new artists bringing back a bit of the folk music sound, like the Lumineers and Mumford & Sons.

Tell me about your personal side

I am happily divorced and single with three daughters and two granddaughters…and a dog who likes to play footsies!

What are your favorite restaurants?

That’s a tough one…I love Stacked for a good burger in Fashion Valley.  Islands is another good one for burgers.  Claim Jumper, although I don’t go there as much as I would like.  On The Border and Olive Garden.  The Omelette Factory for breakfast…and Einstein Brothers.  Gotta throw in my favorite places to get a smoothie…Surf City Squeeze, Jamba Juice and Robeks.

What are your movie interests?

I love a good comedy or drama.

Do you have any hobbies?

I like going to art galleries and art shows, festivals and street fairs, listening to live music…preferably the blues…going to the casinos every once in a while, Padres games.  And I’m not ashamed to admit it, I can be a couch potato from time to time! It’s not really a hobby, but I do like to volunteer my time and services for various events around town when I can.

What are your favorite parts of the city?

I’d have to say The Gaslamp and Seaport Village are at the top of my list.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

RIP Pete Seeger!

 Hey Gary, THANKS!

Dan Sileo to Host All New Morning Show on The Mighty 1090

By Joe Nelson

San Diego, California, February 3, 2014 - Radio station 1090 AM XEPRS, better known
as The Mighty 1090 - San Diego’s Sports Leader, has announced a major addition to
the weekday lineup. Dan Sileo has joined The Mighty 1090 as the new host of the
morning show from 6am to 9am Monday through Friday. San Diego residents can look
forward to a host that leverages his ability to bring inside information, expert analysis
and a tell-it-like-it-is outspoken approach and combine those talents with his humorous
and entertaining style.
The 20-year sports radio and television veteran began his new program this morning.
Sileo has an impressive history of talking sports on some of the country’s top sports
radio stations and networks. He began his sports media career in 1994 with the Oneon-
One Sports Network based in Las Vegas where he had recently retired from
professional football.
Only a year later, he was based in Northern California on legendary radio station KGO
in San Francisco where he anchored sports reports on the morning show. Dan quickly
drew the attention of television and soon added the responsibility of anchoring sports on
KPIX-TV, Channel 5 and KTVU, Channel 2. Within one year, he was lured away by the
top sports station in the bay area, KNBR, hosting the early evening time slot before
being promoted to sister station 1050, The Ticket hosting the morning show. While in
San Francisco, Dan was also anchoring pre and post-game shows for the San
Francisco Giants and the Oakland Raiders and was the sideline reporter for the
Stanford Cardinal Radio Network.
He later moved to Tampa to accept an offer from WDAE, The Sports Animal hosting the
morning show. In less than two years, he caught the ear of Fox Sports as they were
launching the Fox Sports Radio Network and moved back to California to join the
inaugural lineup on the Los Angeles based network.
Eventually he decided to return to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2002 where he resumed
hosting mornings on WDAE. Station owners Clear Channel loved Dan so much they
decided to also carry his Tampa based show on sports stations in Orlando, Jacksonville
and Tallahassee creating a regional sports network. He enjoyed an unprecedented run
until moving south to Miami in 2012 to host the afternoon show on the legendary 560
WQAM. The station quickly added him to the Miami Hurricanes Network anchoring pre
and post-game shows.
It wasn’t long before Sileo caught the attention of The Mighty 1090. The station offered
him the opportunity to return to the prestigious morning drive time slot.
Dan said, “Even though my college and professional football career was mostly in
Florida, I fell in love with California in the years I spent there. When the opportunity
arose to not only work at Southern California’s top rated sports radio station but to also
live in America’s Finest City it was a no-brainer so I quickly accepted The Mighty 1090’s
offer. Besides, who wouldn’t want to trade covering the Marlins and Dolphins for
covering superior organizations like the Padres and Chargers.” Dan went on to say, “I
realize I have big shoes to fill taking over for the legendary Lee ‘Hacksaw’ Hamilton.
Lee set the standard for sports talk radio in Southern California and I know I have a lot
to live up to.”
Sileo was a standout college player at the University of Miami and was drafted by the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the supplemental draft in 1987 as a junior. He was with the
Bucs 2 years and then went to the Dallas Cowboys where Tom Landry signed him.
Jimmy Johnson then became the head coach. Sileo started all pre-season games
including JJ's 1st start versus the San Diego Chargers in San Diego. Sileo had an
injury to his leg and was released after the pre-season. Dan played in the World
League of American Football (WLAF) for the Orlando Thunder which was the Detroit
Lions affiliate. He played all of the pre-season games and was released prior to the
start of the regular season. Sileo finished his career playing in the Arena Football
League with the Las Vegas Sting.
Dan makes no secret of the fact that controversy has occasionally been intertwined with
his rapid rise in the sports radio business. He was fired from his job in Tampa where he
left with the highest rated sports program in the State of Florida which was also one of
the highest rated in the country. He violated Clear Channel’s policy prohibiting
employees from speaking with media critics. In Miami, Dan was highly critical of his
beloved Hurricanes and their fall from the elite ranks which he openly blamed on
University of Miami President Donna Shalala. Because the station was the flagship for
Hurricane sports, pressure was applied to WQAM where they eventually let him go.
Dan said, “The past couple of years in radio has taught me a lot and I plan on applying
those lessons to my passionate and sometimes emotional approach to sports to create
a great experience for San Diego fans, both hard-core and casual.”
Sileo is also a voting member of the Football Writers Association of America and has
served as a Heisman Trophy Award Elector. His wife and 12-year-old daughter have
already joined him in San Diego.
Mike Shepard, Programming-Operations Manager at The Mighty 1090 AM stated, “I am
thrilled to welcome Dan to San Diego’s Sports Leader, The Mighty 1090. Dan is a
passionate, outspoken, engaging and incredibly knowledgeable sports radio
personality. His track record of major market success is remarkable and Dan is a
perfect addition to the Mighty 1090’s top-rated, all-star lineup.”
“I’m very excited about the dynamic and successful Dan Sileo joining us and the best
sports talent line up in all of Southern California. We are sure he will make a dramatic
impact on the Mighty 1090,” Norm Feuer, Vice President–General Manager shared.
Sileo will replace long time sports radio veteran Lee ‘Hacksaw’ Hamilton who will remain
with The Mighty 1090 in a new capacity to be announced in the next few weeks.
Broadcast Company of the Americas (BCA) operates The Mighty 1090 AM, 105.7 The
Walrus, and ESPN 1700 AM and holds the radio broadcast rights for the San Diego
Padres. BCA also participates in Radio San Diego, a sales partnership with KPRI 102.1

Message From CCM+E

By Joe Nelson
Over the past few years, CCM+E has undergone some important changes that have helped to strengthen our stations, platforms and product offerings. At the same time, we continue to evolve and transform our structures and teams, opening up even more opportunities for our company’s growth.

That constant evolution in pursuit of new and great successes leads us to today’s announcement of yet another important strategic initiative -- creating a networks group which can harness the combined power of our existing networks to make each stronger and to give us an unparalleled base to create more networks.

The foundation pillars of the new group will include:

·        Premiere Networks, the number one audio content provider in the country syndicating 90 radio programs and services to more than 5,000 radio affiliates.
·        Total Traffic + Weather Network, which reaches as many people as a broadcast TV network does in the U.S. With a monthly reach of 190 P12+ and over 3,000 radio and 200 television affiliates plus automotive, navigation, internet, mobile and government partners, Total Traffic + Weather Network operates the largest private data gathering network in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
·        24/7 News Network, our 365 days a year news operation, which provides CCM+E stations and existing TT+WN affiliates with news broadcasts and audio, along with text and digital news products.
·        The iHeartRadio Network, focusing on all the digital music programming, curation, affiliate relations and marketing strategies for our service. iHeartRadio reached its first 20 million registered users faster than any digital service in Internet history and is one of the most successful digital services of all time with more than 300 million app downloads.

This unified organization will be led by Darren Davis, who was named today as our new President, Clear Channel Networks Group.
With the creative strengths of all our content and products -- supported by our National Programming Platforms, National Sales, Marketing and Partnerships and Digital groups—we have an amazing array of assets that we can share with our affiliates, advertisers, partners and consumers.

Our continued success is a direct result of our people.  As we evolve, opportunities for further collaboration and growth continue to flourish for our high performers — and Darren Davis is an excellent example. I am excited that someone who has spent almost his entire career with Clear Channel has risen through the organization to lead this important new group. It is a visible example of the quality of people who have built their careers at Clear Channel, and the growth opportunities this company has for every employee regardless of how or where they joined the company.

Darren began his career with Clear Channel as an intern for WASH – FM in Washington, D.C. and went on to be the overnight jock, rising to program director at the station.   He then served as a Regional Vice President of Programming for Clear Channel Detroit and Chicago, eventually becoming Senior Vice President of Programming before being named as Executive Vice President and General Manager of National Programming Platforms.  He built and managed Premium Choice and worked closely with Tom Poleman to develop the NPP division into the organization it is today.

Darren is a great leader and collaborator – understanding both the creative side of the business as well as sales and partnerships. He respects everyone, communicates clearly, moves with a great sense of urgency and purpose, coaches people to new levels of success and teaches them to collaborate well and is committed to winning. He is the perfect leader for this new role.

Darren will oversee and ensure the success and close integration of our Networks with the support of Brian Lakamp and the Digital team, Tim Castelli and the NSMP group and Tom Poleman and NPP. Additionally, Julie Talbott is being promoted to President of Premiere Networks, reporting to Darren, adding her amazing expertise and insights to this new organization.  The Clear Channel National Sales, Marketing and Partnerships group will continue to handle advertising sales for Premiere Networks within the strategy set by Premiere Management.

I am extremely pleased that we have the ability to recognize one of our own in this way —an employee who has worked his way through the ranks of our company and taken advantage of the opportunities here to grow professionally within Clear Channel.  I am certain our Networks will rise to even greater heights under this new team.  Please join me in congratulating Darren on his exciting new role as President, Clear Channel Networks Group.
