RIP Ian Rose

By Joe Nelson
RIP Ian Rose, A true San Diego Radio Legend

A Note from Cathryn Beeks

By Joe Nelson

Happy New Year's Eve, radio friends. I received this note from Cathryn Beeks and wanted to share it here. Thanks Cathryn, I appreciate your kind words!

Hello and happy new year,

I just wanted to send well wishes and a salute to our San Diego broadcasters and a big thanks to Joe for all of his hard, important work. May you all stay healthy and happy in 2015.

In July of this year I had the opportunity to interview Jim McInnes, George Varga and Jack Tempchin all at one time for a 4 part series I did during my time on terrestrial radio. I've re edited the shows down to 2 interesting/entertaining hours with these San Diego legends for my new internet radio show The Listen Local Show on ListenLocalRadio.com.

If you get a chance, please enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/listenlocalradio/the-listen-local-show-12-28-14

December 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson

The December 2014 edition of the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Bromo Abromowitz! Currently on air both at 101.5 KGB FM on the weekend, and every weekday morning on Fargo's 103.9 The Truck with Ben Ziegler and Jim Babbitt.

Joe: What is your current position?
Bromo: My official title is 'Producer'.... But I am not great at it, Ben and Jim make me feel like all three of us are a team... I do the news, sports, weather, and try to book the guests.

JN: What are your favorite parts of your job?
BA: The sole reason I rise at 3:30AM is the thought of putting good theater on the air... sure, there are plenty of prep services available, that most morning shows turn to, I believe we are at our very best when real life incidents come to play. I am used to about 99% of my life exposed. To me, it's part of the job.

JN: Who are your all time favorite musical artists?
BA: I have all of Zamfir's albums, and have started a Zamfir Museum here in Fargo

JN: Tell me about your personal side
BA: AA will always come first for me, I do leave that part out of my personal life, when we are on the radio. NOT because I am embarrassed, but our show is designed to entertain, not to have anyone feel sorry, or threatened by it. It's a tricky slope. I goof around too much, and attempt, key word 'ATTEMPT' to make people laugh, but I am very serious about helping someone whom may need it... anyone.

JN: What are your favorite restaurants?
BA: I haven't really found a favorite place to eat out here (Fargo). I usually love to cook for myself. The Brigantine in San Diego is a great spot.

JN: What are your movie interests?
BA: Lately, my favorite movies are from real life events, of course any movie with Mark Wahlberg, Steve Carrell, and Zamfir are no brainer entertainment.

JN: What are your favorite parts of our city?
BA: My favorite place is about 35 miles East of Alpine, a bit of heaven called Freedom Ranch. Saved my life, and I say prayers every morning to it.

JN: Do you have any hobbies?
BA: Hobbies are slim, my life is simple. I am doing a job that I love so much. Every minute... nothing is worse than doing something you hate, feeling trapped, and not taking risks... before I moved to Fargo, last March, I had never seen snow fall. Coldest weather I was ever in was 26 degrees. Thanksgiving morning here was 17 below, minus the wind chill factor! People still tell me "Man, you haven't seen anything yet" Where last winter they had temps at 50 below. I still get that perplexed look.. "YOU moved from San Diego to Fargo.... WHY???" Because what I do is simple, I get to work with two creative guys, Ben and Jim and put theater in listener's minds. I even hum along to a country song now and then.

***Editor's Note***
I have come to know Bromo pretty well over the last few years. I can tell you this man's life was literally on the edge. I went with him to watch him speak once at Freedom Ranch and have included the article I wrote from that night here. Also I can tell you he lives, eats and breathes radio. He is exactly the type of person radio is fortunate to have. Before he went to Fargo, he was also working in an office building doing collections! He found an opportunity with Ben and Jim and snagged it!

Article can be found HERE

Thanks Bromo, and thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio.org!

Letter From the Editor

By Joe Nelson

This time of year, radio slows to a crawl. Maybe there are a couple stations temporarily flipping to holiday format, perhaps some staff changes. It is nice to take a breather for a few weeks.
This year I welcome it even more as it has been a true struggle for me, possibly my most challenging yet. I am writing this letter to explain the little extra lull on SDR than normal.
Without getting into every minute detail, I had major financial issues, some health concerns, some problems with my own family, work has been more difficult than ever before and I must give that one my 100%, of course. First and foremost, my mom fell a couple months ago and broke her hip. That, coupled with her on oxygen 24/7, emphysema, and COPD, it was just too much and she has been placed on hospice. She is relaxing comfortably at home now, happy and contend, but bed-bound. This has been incredibly pressing on me, my own family, my three siblings and of course my dad.

I write this not as a 'give me sympathy' letter, but just so everyone knows where I am. I will continue to do SDR, I will give it everything I have, as I always have. Your contributions are important to me as well, sending me information, press releases, etc.
2015 will be huge for SDR as I am currently working with an IT pro and we will be moving it to WordPress. This will allow a multitude of features that Blogger did not support. There will be tabs for different categories, stations, and personalities and much more.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas, or however it may fit your preference. A Happy New Year as well, next year will be much better!

Lincoln Financial Media Sold to Entercom

Entercom Communications Corp. Announces Definitive Agreement to Acquire Lincoln Financial Media from Lincoln Financial Group for $105 Million

December 08, 2014 08:55 AM Eastern Standard Time
BALA CYNWYD, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Entercom Communications Corp. (“Entercom” or the “Company”) (NYSE: ETM) announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Lincoln Financial Media (“LFM”) from Lincoln Financial Group (“Lincoln”) (NYSE: LNC) for $105 million plus working capital. The transaction is subject to FCC and other customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. The Company expects that the deal will close in the second quarter of 2015.
“Not only will this transaction allow Lincoln Financial Media to align itself with a well-respected media organization, but it also enables Lincoln Financial Group to focus on its strategy to grow its core lines of business.”
The agreement includes fifteen radio stations in the Atlanta, Denver, Miami and San Diego markets, and it will expand Entercom’s station portfolio to more than 130 stations in 26 markets.
Commenting on the agreement, Entercom President and CEO David J. Field stated: “We are excited to announce the acquisition of Lincoln Financial Media and welcome the addition of their outstanding brands and talented broadcasters to Entercom. LFM is a great organization that has done an excellent job serving its listeners, customers and communities over many years and we look forward to building on that tradition. LFM is a perfect fit for us as it bolsters our position in Denver and expands our footprint into Atlanta, Miami and San Diego with terrific brands that have significant growth potential. Furthermore, it fulfills our disciplined acquisition criteria as it enhances our company’s competitive position and growth and should be accretive to shareholders in 2015 while having a minimal impact on leverage.”
"We are pleased to reach an agreement with Entercom Communications to sell Lincoln Financial Media," added Dennis R. Glass, president and CEO of Lincoln Financial Group. "Not only will this transaction allow Lincoln Financial Media to align itself with a well-respected media organization, but it also enables Lincoln Financial Group to focus on its strategy to grow its core lines of business."
The transaction is structured as an acquisition of the stock of LFM with a tax election that allows Entercom to receive a step-up in the tax basis of the station tangible and intangible assets providing additional future tax shields and enhancing future free cash flow.
The $105 million purchase price will be paid in the form of $77.5 million in cash and $27.5 million in new perpetual cumulative convertible preferred stock that will be issued to Lincoln. Entercom expects to finance the cash portion of the purchase price through a combination of its existing $50 million revolver, cash on hand, and through other financing sources, if necessary.
The convertible preferred stock will not count as debt under the Company’s debt agreements. With the use of convertible preferred stock and adjustments for pro forma cost savings reasonably expected, the transaction will have minimal impact on the Company’s leverage as defined under its credit agreement.
Entercom anticipates that it will begin operating the LFM stations under a time brokerage agreement which is expected to commence in late January following the usual Justice Department regulatory review. In order to comply with the FCC’s station ownership limitations, the Company plans to divest one FM station in the Denver market.

November 2014 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight

By Joe Nelson

The November 2014 edition of the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Michael Halloran!
L-R Chris Carmichael, Michael Halloran, Joe Nelson

Thanks for your time, Halloran! And again, congratulations on the PD position!

Joe: What is your current position?
Halloran: Program Director and afternoon host, 91X

JN: What are your favorite parts of your job?
MH: No favorite parts at all, the whole thing is a package. And it's a great package. This is my second time around.

JN: Who are your all time favorite musical artists?
MH: That's a loaded question, it always changes depending what mood I'm in. Right now it would be the band CAN from Germany, but 20 minutes ago it was Fela Kuti

JN: Who is your current favorite?
MH: Tony Allen and Damon Albarn's new collaboration

JN: Tell me about your personal side
MH: I was born in Milwaukee, raised in Detroit until I was 11. I Went to school overseas in England until 17. Played in a band in England, I still have very good friends from that time that I see on a regular basis. One of them manages Jesse J, one of the biggest pop stars today. Some of the others are owners of huge internet companies... but our bond is strong. I moved to San Diego in 1986 after many years on the air in Detroit. I started at 91X as the night person. Eventually ending up as MD, then APD, then PD. I left in 1996 when Clear Channel came into the market and told me that Bob Marley, Blink 182, and Jewel weren't to be played on 91X.

JN: What are your favorite restaurants?
MH: Mama Testa. It was in Hillcrest. It's moving to Black Mountain Road, near Mira Mesa Blvd. Rimel's Rotisserie, two locations. La Jolla and Cardiff. Zenbu in Cardiff. Gaglione Bros. Joe Gaglione is a big supporter of the local music scene. And my local taco shop, Don Carlos in La Jolla, you must try it.

(Editor's note, Don Carlos is actually one of my favorites in town as well. Shop owner Ryan is a friend and a huge supporter of SanDiegoRadio. On Pearl St., a stone's throw from The Comedy Store -Joe)

JN: What are your movie interests?
MH: Bladerunner, Contact, Momento. I like Spacey, trippy films that make you think.

JN: Do you have any hobbies?
MH: Photography, travel, mororcycle touring. Usually in the fall, I take off and ride the motorbike all over the west. Bryce, Zion, Yosemite. Next year it's Yellowstone or Jellystone, depending on if Yogi is hibernating.

JN: What are your favorite parts of our city?
MH: I am a big fan of the beaches that are so hard to find. I love places like Dogpatch, which is out on the 94. I like places like Nestor. I am into the street/neighborhood signs dotted all over San Diego. I like the huge difference between PB and OB, the subtle differences between PB and MB. I like the fact that Encinitas is holding strong in the effort to not over-modernize the area. I love the little enclaves in Solana Beach and Carlsbad that still have old school Mexican 'hoods, like the one near Tony's Jacal. Or the 'hood near Lola's or El Torito in Carlsbad.

JN: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
MH: I would like to point out that no matter how hard the sun tries, he will never know what a shadow looks like.

Thanks again, Halloran!

Thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio.org

Mother Goose Parade 2014

By Joe Nelson
Sunday marked the 68th annual Mother Goose Parade in El Cajon. Always a tradition the Sunday before Thanksgiving and featuring a new route and heavy as usual with local media personalities.
The Grand Marshal Cassandra Kunze. Cassandra is actually from El Cajon and was once Mother Goose Queen.
Parade Emcees were local charity icon Sam Diego and KUSI's Staci Ortiz-Davis.

There was a twenty minute delay during the parade as one of the participants was thrown from his horse. There is no word on his condition, but he was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
