DAN AUSTIN NAMED DIRECTOR OF SALES AT LFM/SAN DIEGO

San Diego, CA – Lincoln Financial Media announced today that Dan Austin is the new Director of Sales at its San Diego cluster of stations.  He will supervise sales efforts at KSON-FM, KBZT-FM and KIFM-FM.

Austin's radio career spans at least 20 years and includes sales, management and on-air broadcasting.  He comes to LFM from Townsquare Media, where he was VP/Market Manager in Albany, NY.  Austin's experience also includes positions with CBS Radio in Seattle, Citadel Radio in Syracuse, Clear Channel and Cox Radio stations.

"We looked long and hard for the right person for this job," said Rick Jackson, Senior VP/General Manager of LFM/San Diego.  "I've known Dan for years.  He's a proven winner and will fit right in with our team."

Pala Rez Radio Honored

Pala Rez Radio 91.3 was honored again this year at the annual San Diego Press Club awards, held Tuesday, October 29th at the Jacobs Center in San Diego.  Building on last year’s solo award in the Best Radio Newscast category, Rez Radio’s “Pala Today” news at noon with John Fox this year took first place for Best Radio Newscast, and the “Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site” show hosted by Gilbert Smith and Mike Bragg took both first and third place awards in the Radio Interview show category for episodes featuring Ken Kramer and Shotgun Tom Kelly.  That’s a total of four Press Club awards in the station’s two years on the air.  

Pala Today airs daily Monday through Friday at noon and Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site airs weekly on Wednesday at 12:30 following Pala Today with a repeat Sunday afternoons at 1:30 between Old Time Radio Hour shows “Gunsmoke” and “My Favorite Husband”.

October 2013 Spotlight

Ashlee Rock - October 2013 Spotlight



The October 2013 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Rock 105.3's Ashlee Rock.

What is your current position/title?  I am the assistant producer/on air for "The Show", 

mornings on Rock 105.3 6-10am.  I also host our Best Of show every Saturday, 6-

10am, and am on 10a-2p Saturdays and 1-9pm on Sundays on Rock 105.3.  You 

can also catch Sky (news girl extrodinare for "The Show") and me on the 

CW6 morning show "Wake Up San Diego" Thursday mornings in the 8am hour 

for a segment called "Out & About," where we fill you in on fun things coming up 

that weekend!   

What are your favorite parts of the job?   Everything.  This is my dream job, being able to 

entertain and uplift people, and have a platform where I can make people smile, 

inspire them, and perform, in any capacity.  This truly is my passion and I feel very

grateful to be able to call it my job. 

Who are your all time favorite musical artists?   Haha.  You are going to laugh.  I love ALL 

music, hence why I work in radio, but my all time artists definitely vary.  I would 

say Michael Jackson, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Elton John, the Beatles, 

Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Tom Petty, Green Day, Tupac, Notorious 

B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Gwen Stefani, Fergi, Britney 

Spears...I can keep going. ;) 


And your current favorite?  Lil Wayne!  I love him so much!  Also Nicky Minaj, Big Sean,

Tyga, 2 Chainz, Drake, and any and all EDM.  Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, 

Zedd, Krewella, Avici, Benny Benassi, DeadMau5, Kaskade...again, I could keep 

going.  I love music!  I go through phases but am always listening, signing, and 

dancing to music!   

What are your favorite restaurants?  Oh my gosh.  Don't even get me started on food.  

And don't make me pick which one I like more, food or music!  I would say some of

my all time favs in San Diego are George's at the Cove, Blue Boheme, Urban 

Solace, any taco shop...I have probably been to them all :)  Can I just say Little 

Italy as a whole?  Also, Old Town as a whole? ;)  I also LOVE Royal India, Burger 

Lounge, Cali Comfort...there is just not enough time.  One of my favorite parts of 

San Diego is I have lived here for 12 years, and still continue to find amazing 

restaurants of all sorts.  It's outstanding.  

What are your movie interests?   I am a girl, so I love Rom Coms...I just can't help it.  I 

love to bawl my eyes out to sappy love stories that go straight to my soul.  I also 

love comedies and thrillers, though.  I can be tough!  Dimb & Dumber is hands 

down my all time fav.  Like, I know every word.  I also absolutely love The 

Notebook, Love Actually, Pretty Woman, Anchorman, Ace Ventura 1 & 2, Kill Bill 1 

& 2, True Romance,  Way of the Gun, and Grease (which I also know every word 

to). ;)

Do you have any hobbies?   Can my job be my hobby?  :)  Besides that, I love yoga, I 

have done it for the past 6 years and it has changed my life.  And gotten rid of the 

majority of my cellulite. It's amazing!  ;)  But it really does keep me centered, and 

strengthens my mind, body, and soul all at once.  I am obsessed.   

What are your favorite parts of the city?   Anywhere by the water, and I am a happy girl.  

Normally I will venture out to Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Del Mar, La Jolla...any 

place by the water that includes a view, a cocktail, and some delicious apps or 

perhaps a cheese plate, and I'm there!   


Is there anything else you'd like to share?   I believe everyone has a purpose in life.  And 

everyone deserves to be happy.  These are two things I strive for on a daily 

basis.  I believe God put me (and everyone) here for a reason, and there is 

nothing I would love more than to be on a big enough platform one day where I 

can truly make a difference.  I want to help others, and am super grateful to have 

been able to run the Rock & Roll half marathon the past 3 years with the 

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, raising over $51,000 total.  I 

want to bring people up, make them laugh, and spread the message that you are 

worth it!  My Mom taught me that.  She got it from Oprah.  I'm not trying to steal 

her swag or anything...just trying to continue the message. ;)

   Sean will be moving his great voice, natural talent, and energetic personality to Los Angeles where he will be joining 94-7 "The Wave"
   Sean has also been spending his Saturday nights in east county at Sycuan for their 'Binglo' nights. Sean will still come down to work certain events for the casino.

   Sean's bio, nabbed from his 95.7 page: "Sean is originally from Oakland, Ca where he was born & raised. From an early age Sean had always been into music. He was heavily influenced by Bay Area Mixmaster Michael Erickson. Dj Jazzy Jeff and a host of others. While in high school Sean saw his mentors live for the first time and decided that's what he wanted to do. Sean Dj'd all through high school & college. Hit the road with the US Navy traveled & ultimately did gigs overseas. While still in the US Navy he was station in San Diego. Where he interned for local radio station XHRM Magic 92.5. He landed a job there after the military. He sharpened his skills as a producer and worked his way up to Imaging Director and On air Dj for XHRM Magic 92.5 & XHTZ Jammin Z90.

AJ’S KIDS CRANE

12th ANNUAL AJ’S KIDS CRANE RETURNS 
TO ENERGY 103.7 – KEGY- FM
San Diego, CA – The 12th Annual AJ’s Kids Crane returns Friday, November 8th to the IKEA parking lot located at 2149 Fenton Parkway in Mission Valley.  San Diegans are encouraged to donate toys in exchange for various prizes and/or activities.   The event, created by ENERGY 103.7 personalities AJ Machado and Hula Ramos, will feature AJ living atop a 30-foot “crane” – rain or shine – until the goal of collecting 100,000 toys is reached.   All event toys and proceeds benefit AJ’s Kids Fund for Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.     
The toys are collected and donated to help the young patients feel more at ease while undergoing procedures or a stay at Rady Children’s Hospital.  "It's been incredible watching the community of San Diego grow this annual toy drive over the course of a dozen years. Sunday Night Slow Jams–the CD–to be carried in-stores

OCTOBER 25, 2013, SAN DIEGO, CA  —  Sunday Night Slow Jams creator/host and Fusion Radio Networks president, R Dub!, has signed a deal with Wal-Mart and Universal Records that rolls out a new line of “best-of” Sunday Night Slow Jams CDs available at Wal-Mart and walmart.com.  The deal marks R Dub!’s first partnership with the retail giant and the timing is no coincidence–hot off the heels of his prime-time television debut on ABC’s Shark Tank, the Wal-Mart deal was just one of a string of post-Shark Tank slam dunks for Dub.
R Dub! said, “We’ve had tremendous growth this year, expanding the show into dozens of new markets.  Now, with our music available in every Wal-Mart in the country–every Slow Jams fan, in every city can enjoy the music.”  Adding to the inevitable question–why not just download the music–R Dub! responds: “There’s something special about a well-put together CD. The packaging, the insert, the notes, the graphics…there’s even a special message to Slow Jams listeners inside. Downloads are nice…but now and then there’s that special album that comes along that just deserves to be purchased in the physical form. This is it.”

Chris Cantore and U-T TV

   Friday I decided to check in with longtime radio guy Chris Cantore who now works as the UT's Director of Lifestyle and Entertainment.

   Of course Chris is known for his many years on the radio, from Star 100.7, Q106, 102.1 KPRI, and his 11 years at 91X.
   Chris is also credited with conceiving and launching NBC San Diego's music platform sounddiego.
   As part of Chris' leadership, he oversees content for Night & Day, Style and DiscoverSD.
   Chris took over in March of last year and U-T TV now boasts an impressive daily line-up. Here is a list of the current shows.
   San Diego Radio is well represented by Scott Kaplan of The Mighty 1090, and Roger Hedgecock from 760 KFMB.
 
   As we finish off 2013, and head into the new year, it sounds like Chris has some really great hopes and ideas for 2014.
   SanDiegoRadio will closely follow the exciting changes.

30 Days of Giving

Time, A Whole New Way

   Pala Rez Radio 91.3 will introduce a new service to listeners beginning Sunday, November 3 when the local time changes from Pacific Daylight to Pacific Standard Time.  We’ll begin announcing the current time on the air.  OK, sure.  It’s appropriate to remind people what the time really is if they’ve forgotten to spring forward, fall on your face … or backwards … or whatever.  But what’s so new about announcing the time?  Radio stations have been doing that for over 90 years.  What’s new is how we’re going to do it.  As part of Rez Radio’s efforts to preserve and revitalize local culture, our time checks will be spoken in Pa’enexily, the traditional language of the Cupeño people, who make up the majority of the Pala tribe.

   The last person raised in the traditional language of the people from Cupa, Rosinda Nolasquez passed several decades ago.  In her childhood, telling time wasn’t very important other than to refer to noon, sunset, etc.   This innovation being implemented at Rez Radio brings with it the challenge of finding a way to say something that was never said back when the language was in regular daily use.  Through consultations with linguists, elders and other interested tribal members, we’ve come up with a format for telling digital time in Pa’enexily.  When you hear, for example, “Ivi suplewit me wichu Pala aw”  what you’re hearing is “It’s one and four (or 1:04) in Pala”

   Paul Miranda, local birdsinger and one of a handful of fluent Pa’enexily speakers in Pala has recorded all the elements that will allow us to assemble the announcement of the correct current time 24 hours a day.  These time check announcements will happen without any fanfare or translation.  Just as when learning any language, those who don’t already know it will come to recognize it through repetition. 

   Rez Radio is already the only radio station in the world where Pa’enexily is spoken on the air.  You’ll hear it in our weekly “Pala Life:  Past and Present” program, our several times daily “Word of the Day” feature, and at the top of every hour in our Legal ID.  Now, we’ll be giving the current time in traditional language as well.  Listen for time checks in Pa’enexily up to several times an hour beginning November 3 on Rez Radio 91.3.  Our 24/7 live stream can also be heard on iHeartRadio, TuneIn.com and at our own website www.PalaTribe.com .

2013 Brand Diego Awards

San Diego Radio Was Well Represented at the 2013 Brand Diego Awards
The San Diego radio industry was well represented at the 2013 Brand Diego Awards, with several individuals winning top honors at the inaugural event presented by the San Diego Ad Club. Bob Bolinger was awarded the Paula Sullivan Outstanding Achievement Award, an award presented to individuals who have continually demonstrated their active involvement and dedication to the San Diego advertising and graphic design community and share their abilities, resources and inspiration for the betterment of our industry and/or the San Diego community at large. Star 94.1’s Delana Bennett won Media Professional of the Year, and KPBS took home the Media Company of the Year.

In addition, the San Diego Ad Club Board of Directors presented the AAF Silver Medal Award to Jonathan Bailey, i.d.e.a. and Melissa Lopez, Mindgruve for their leadership and service to the club. The Sheila Fox Scholarship was awarded to Lisa Papada from the Art Institute of CA, San Diego. The Brand Diego Awards highlight the club’s ongoing commitment to the San Diego business community and in support of the advertising and marketing industry in our region. There were 70 nominees for 14 Brand Diego Awards.
According to Tonya Mantooth, executive producer at Mantooth Studios and 2013/14 president of the San Diego Ad Club, “We are so proud of the honorees for our inaugural Brand Diego Awards. It’s a great representation of the amazing talent in the San Diego ad community.” Co-chairs for The Brand Diego Awards are also co-chairs of the San Diego Ad Club Board of Directors Jonathan Bailey, i.d.e.a. and Melissa Lopez, Mindgruve. “It was a great evening for our industry. There’s so much talent here in San Diego,” said Bailey. “We appreciate the opportunity to recognize the great work produced right here in San Diego,” added Lopez. The San Diego Ad Club was founded in 1911 when the city officials were seeking promotional assistance for the upcoming Panama California Exposition in 1915. Today the San Diego Ad Club and its young professionals group, Ad 2 San Diego, boast 750 members and are affiliated with the American Advertising Federation.
