There's a New Country Station in Town

By Joe Nelson

KRLY-FM in Alpine re-branded and changed formats over the weekend.

Station Manager Chris Torrick told SanDiegoRadio that they had a perceptual study in hand for a few months. "We got quite a large sample, and these participants were handpicked because they were Alpine residents that could pick us up on the FM dial. We waited on pins and needles for the results which we expected to lean toward country but we did not expect the number to as big as it was. When David (Manzi) and I got involved with this station we wanted to mirror the community that we serve. We think we have found our niche and are pretty excited about the future for the station and this incredible community."
KRLY is one of two LPFM stations in the County built to serve a specific community. KRLY was recently given the OK from the FCC to double it's output power. I asked Chris how that came about. "When our engineer was going through a technical inspection he discovered that some of the info at our transmitter site had changed because of an improvement in technology along with a change in classification from a LP10 to an LP100. When this was corrected with the FCC it gave us a chance to serve the community a little better and honestly it got us legal. You can get in just as much trouble by running under tolerance and you can for running over it."

Clint August - September 2013 Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The September 2013 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features KGB's Clint August.
Clint, thanks for taking the time for the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight feature.
Joe: Clint, what is your current position?
Clint: On air afternoon drive on 101.5 KGB FM San Diego and Saturday mornings from 9-10 AM on News Radio 600 KOGO (My Home Improvement)

JN: What are your favorite parts of the job?
CA: Meeting listeners and having the opportunity to thank our military heroes every day before I sign off. I think it's very important to let them know how much we appreciate them for their sacrifice. PAST AND PRESENT!!

JN: Who are your favorite musical artists?
CA: Guns N Roses, Van Halen (David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar), AC/DC, Scorpions, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, U2, Blind Melon, Dean Martin... the list goes on, but those come to mind as of now.

JN: And your current favorites?
CA: The same... I keep finding a reason to enjoy classic and new artists every day. It really depends on my mood.

JN: Tell me about your personal side.
CA: I enjoy family and friends very much. I love to camp, ride my Harley, talk with my sons and see how their day goes. Talking with my wife... I really value my neighbors and I enjoy being a part of the Santee Comunity. Supporting local business is huge for me as well.

JN: What are your favorite restaurants?
CA: Eastbound Bar and Grille, The Godfather, Olive Garden, and pretty much any other restaurant that serves food!!! I LOVE FOOD...

JN: What are your movie interests?
CA: I absolutely love movies...The Shawshank Redemption is one of my top 5 of all time. The Avengers is incredible because it's a great family movie, yet compelling enough for me (as an adult), to really enjoy the story line. Some of my other favorites are The Expendables, Terminator, Tombstone, and several others. Movies take me away from reality for a short amount of time. I love my realty, but sometimes I want to forget about the bills I owe, the appointments I have to keep, and other responsibilities.

JN: Do you have any hobbies?
CA: My hobbies are riding my Harley (if that's a hobby), camping, and taking pictures for sure.... enjoying what San Diego has to offer by way of the beach, the mountains, and just experiencing different things that I learn about in our county.

JN: What are your favorite parts of the city?
CA: I love Gaslamp District, downtown. Julian is an absolute must, to appreciate our surrounding mountains. I do love Santee and if I have to choose which part, I'd say Town Center. Santee has really improved in the last 20 years. (Can we get a darn movie theater already???)

JN: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
CA: I want anyone who reads this to know how much I appreciate your support over my tenure in radio here in San Diego. I have been blessed to meet many new friends throughout my career. When I get a single phone call or email, or even a handshake in the grocery store... that's why I love what I do. Thank you, and if you ever served our military, you will ALWAYS be remembered!!!
*Editor's note*
That's where my interview with Clint ended, but he left out some important things. Knowing Clint as well as I do, I am sure it had more to do with his humility, to keep the focus off of him, and on his causes.
Clint is a huge supporter of the military, he hosts many fundraisers throughout the year to gather funds. He holds his annual 'May Ride', gets celebrities to come help out. He once asked for 'some' bikers to go by the house of Josiah, a sweet boy who is sick, and by the time they rode by, there were HUNDREDS! Video below

Josiah and I

Clint, thanks for all you do for the military and San Diego.

KSON Listener To The Rescue!

By Joe Nelson

Here is an e-mail from Chris Turner, KSON-98.1-94/9 Promotions & Marketing Director:

Thought I'd share a quick story.  Last Friday morning KSON Loyal Listener Kathy Bateman was driving to work when she noticed that the 3 Rascal Flatts tour buses were stopped on the side of Interstate 8.  Kathy pulled over to help.  Turns out the tour bus has blown a hose and need a hose clamp. Kathy offered to go to the auto parts store to get them a new one.  Sadly, when she returned with the clamps~~the driver had fixed the problem and they had gone on their way.

Kathy called us and told us the story~~so KSON stepped up to the plate and offered Kathy two premium tickets to the show that night.  She was excited to say the least.

The story doesn't there......with the quick thinking of John D'Angelo.....John got the package of hose clamps from Kathy....then took them to the meet-n-greet and told the band the story...where they sent Kathy an apology, a thank you and autographs all on the back of the package of hose clamps!  (see attached photos)

Kathy's good deed paid off even further as she'll also be attending the Jason Aldean concert on October 18th.  Lets hope she doesn't see Jason's bus anywhere on the way to the show!!

FM 94/9 Independence Jam Wrap Up

By Joe Nelson
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FM 94/9 Independence Jam 2013...A Complete Success!

Oceanside, CA - September 23, 2013 - Yet another sold-out FM 94/9 Independence Jam was a huge success at Oceanside Pier's Junior Seau Amphitheater on Saturday, September 21st. Seven bands played to over 3000 happy fans while the perfect San Diego weather inspired various band members to call the waterfront venue "the most epic place we've ever played!"

Local favorites Dead Feather Moon kicked things off on the Miller Lite main stage while The Colourist, American Authors, and Smallpools lit up the Boom Movement stage. Royal Teeth flew in from New Orleans for the show and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. had the entire crowd clapping and dancing as soon as they hit the main stage. Headliners Cage The Elephant brought the house down with their thrilling live show that included frontman Matt Schultz walking upright on the crowd's hands and shoulders.

FM 94/9 hosted a live broadcast at the top of the venue where bands and fans could - and did - mingle. Lines at the Meet and Greet tent moved briskly as everyone got to meet their favorite Indie Jam bands. Concertgoers sampled Naked Juice and Activate Drinks kept everyone hydrated. It was a great show and a great day, with pelicans flying overhead as the sun set the perfect ending to another "epic" FM 94/9 concert.

91X X-Fest Wrap Up

By Joe Nelson

CHULA VISTA, CA - All seats were sold out at the 91X "X-Fest" concert last night at Sleep Train Amphitheater, with headliners Blink-182, 30 Seconds to Mars and the Offspring performing to over 19,000 fans.

91X, celebrating its 30th Anniversary of broadcasting this year, packed the X-Fest line-up with a total of 11 bands, also including Jimmy Eat World, Silversun Pickups, the Dirty Heads, Wavves, Atlas Genius, New Politics, and IAMDYNAMITE.

Also scheduled to appear, Fitz and the Tantrums needed to cancel at the last minute due to the birth of a son to lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick.

Almost all bands came out in front of fans to interview live on 91X and sign autographs.  Listeners also collected an estimated 500 pounds of clothing for Father Joe's Villages. Anyone who made a donation received a free 18" x 24" X-Fest 2013 poster from 91X.

“It’s been an exciting year celebrating the 30th anniversary of 91X, and we thank all the 91X listeners who came to make this X-fest one of the biggest ever,” said 91X Program Director and DJ Christy Taylor.  “What a day!”

Allison Ross - SanDiegoRadio Bonus Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
Growing up in San Diego, I was fortunate to see some great news people come into our home every night as I would sit and watch the newscasts with my parents. There were many that were here for a while and left, but there were staples, anchors you could count on year in and year out. One such anchor was Allison Ross.
Recently I was able to catch up with Allison and have coffee with her near her home in La Jolla.
Allison spoke of her days in the news, on the radio and her life today. She is truly a kind spirit who, even after going through a very rough patch in her life, loves life, loves living, and is enjoying spending a lot of her time as a musician.
Allison was with KFMB TV from 1978-1989 and then with KNSD 7/39 for two years. She then worked in radio as a reporter until 2001.
Classic KFMB Jigsaw Puzzle
Allison interviewing James Earl Jones
Allison has not given up on returning to TV or radio, "I would hate to waste the assets and skills I hold" " I have training that can be used"

When she does get the opportunity to host a radio talk show, she has it all planned out. "I would call it 'Allison's Wonderland'" It would be a forum to talk about all things San Diego, including City Council, hot city topics, and even a Q&A with Allison.

Allison, thanks for the time you have given SanDiegoRadio, it's great to see someone, especially with your skill set, bounce back and want to contribute once again.

Thanks for tuning in.

August 2013 Ratings

By Joe Nelson
The following are the ratings for San Diego, August 2013: (I also included the previous month, for comparison)

Letter From the Editor

By Joe Nelson

   "Integrity" "Trust" "Reliability"
These are three words words I want associated with SanDiegoRadio, and  myself.

Over the last few weeks I have received dozens of comments, messages, and e-mails regarding the absence of a morning show host. I made it a point not to publish anything until I have verified the information as accurate.

I received three comments today and I chose not to publish them due to their cruel nature. This column is not for mean spirited 'humor'. It was then I decided I should run this letter, explaining why there has been nothing. I am not going to run on speculation or rumors.

Once this is worked out, you can bet I will have the information here. But until the time is right, I'd rather just run with the facts I know.

PD Mike O'Reilly, Sam The Cooking Guy, and now Larry Himmel have done a gallant job filling the big chair (With Phil Blauer next week), the team has really stepped up their game even more to keep the consistency, and some of the comments on the "Lots of Radio News Today" article second that. So for now, hopefully everything is ok and all will return to normal.
To close, this is not a tabloid radio column. I have always, and will continue to run the facts.

Thanks for tuning in!

SanDiegoRadio Job Board

By Joe Nelson
This one comes from Roy Robertson, former KFMB employee of 30 years...
MBLN, the Money Business Life Network, has an immediate opening for part-time board operators and audio producers to assist with programming and production operations.  The network needs a producer for our three-hour programming block as soon as possible.  The shift will initially be 20 hours a week, with the possibility of expanded hours and responsibilities in the near future.  MBLN programming airs on a network of radio affiliates nationally, distributed by GAB radio, and also airs shows which are televised on the BizTV network nationally.  We are looking for candidates who have experience running live call-in talk shows for major market radio stations, and can manage running a board with multiple talent sources, pre-produced elements and phones.  Other responsibilities may including running studio operations for other programs, running commercial client sessions, training for TV studio operations, and possibly running  video switcher for our programming and other program providers.  Please contact Roy Robertson, MBLN Operations Manager, at 858 726-0382 or email

KGB Sky Show 38

By Joe Nelson
Last night following the SDSU Aztecs football game, the lights went out and the sky erupted into a fifteen minute barrage of fireworks synced to the KGB Sky Show soundtrack with the theme of "Cops and Robbers".
The afternoon started off with Bob & Coe broadcasting from KGB/Aztec Village. Listeners were treated to a GREAT set by guitarist Stefanos Alexiou. This guy tore it up with his guitar and the fans loved it! I do see a bright future for him, and hope to see him perform again. And he is only 13!! By the way, he plays more than just guitar, he can play many more instruments as well! Check out some of his videos at
Clint August joined the broadcast talking about recent Sky Shows and building anticipation of the night's events to come.
The Aztec Marching Band came through the Village and played a couple songs.
It was a real treat to see one of the Eastlake Little League players drop by, here is #18 with Ernie Martinez.
And here is one with Bromo
Then the whole gang! #18, Ernie, Bob, Coe, Cope, Clint, and Bromo.
Then it was time to file into the stadium. Ready for some Aztecs football and pyrotechnics.
Unfortunately the Aztecs lost 40-19. But as they say, there is always next week. The crowd was terrific and lively. They even got the 'wave' around the Q a few times.
When the seconds ticked off the clock, Bob and Coe, along with Tony Gwynn introduced the Eastlake Little League team at the 20 yard line. The fans gave the United States Little League Champions a standing ovation. It was a great touch to the night to bring them out.
Then the lights shut off, cue the iconic theme song to Sky Show, and light the sky!

Well done, once again KGB team! Can't wait to see what's next for Sky Show 39!

Thanks for tuning in.
