Dave Rickards returns to 100.7 Jack FM

By Joe Nelson
Dave Rickards, if 100.7 Jack FM's "DSC Show", will return to The Big Chair shortly.
Rickards has been absent from his post for about 4 weeks now, tending to undislosed matters. Jack FM today released a statement exclusively to SanDiegoRadio stating Rickards will return Monday, September 16 and rejoin his team of Shelly Dunn, Cookie 'Chainsaw' Randolph, Chris Boyer, Ruth 66, and Emily Maguire.

In Dave's absence, Fellow KFMB teammates have stepped in nicely to fill the void. Program Director Mike O'Reilly, Sam The Cooking Guy, Larry Himmel, and this week, News 8 anchor Phil Blauer.
Listen to 100.7 Jack FM today as the station will begin airing promos for his return. Check out their website HERE

As always, thanks for tuning in to SanDiegoRadio.org for all your radio information

I was just about to comment on the other thread my own guesses. At first I thought daughter going off to school, but that went on too long. Then I thought family/personal health issues. I've noticed the past couple of months that Dave's voice seemed a little raspy. A month long disappearance MAY have meant he needed surgery or something to fix a vocal chord issue. PURE speculation and probably wrong, but I thought his vocal change was pretty prominent. As for attitudes - I agree with the consensus in the other thread. For some time Dave (and Boyer) have become increasingly mean spirited in shutting down not only listeners with different viewpoints, but other team members to the point that Shelly hardly speaks at all any more. Gone are the days of the Beauty Bubble, Pregnancy Police and 60 second Divorce. For the past few years it's a Name is Your Buzzer quiz followed by conservative political rants. Dave's got the greatest and quickest humor of any on air guy, which is why I keep coming back after switching to other stations, but I'm tired of the political arrogance. I want my fun morning antics back! Dave - can't wait for your return, I hope you and the family are 100% fine, and hopefully the absence will allow a "reset" on some aspects of the show.

HURRAY!!! He's coming back!! We've missed you Dave!! Thanks to all for filling in while he was away! Awesome crew!!

Anonymous you have said some things that the rest of us have wanted to say for a while now....

To Anonymous #1
I could not have written it better myself.
Thank you, Dave and Boyer's political rants have caused me to turn the show off quite a bit in the last couple of years. His thin skinned tantrums are not very becoming of a broadcaster of his talent. I too hope he tones it down and goes back to being funny.

Anonymous said...

The main problem with the political rants on the show is that Boyer, Shelley, Dave and Ruth (when she chimes in) are not very good at defending their particular position. Chainsaw seems to be the only one with any grasp on the issues.

I see this page showing up on the web today:

http://www.sandiegojack.com/story/16322085/this-is-the-eulogy-i-wrote-and-spoke-at-my-father-in-laws-services-this-week?clienttype=printable

Did Dave's father-in-law recently pass away? Is that the reason for his absence?

Anonymous said...

It seems as though the show has been "neutered" since coming to Jack FM. The risque bits are long gone the provocative back and forths are no more. This is now a tame show for the bored (and boring) Jeff and Jer crowd. I have been a listener since the Dawn Patrol and this is not my DSC. Did Dave get fed up? Is the whole crew feeling sussed? DSC needs a kick in the pants and a fire lit under them.

Stacy said...

Welcome back Dave! Hope all is good! Been a listener since the beginning! LOVE YOUR SHOW!!

Anonymous said...

The shows without Dave have been very entertaining and fun to listen to. The rest of the crew seems to be having a lot of fun with the guest hosts. Sam the Cooking Guy and everyone else have done a great job since Dave has been gone. It's been nice having a break from Dave's constant complaining. I had to stop listening for about three months last year because Dave was threatening to unplug all the time. I really hope this was a vacation for Dave. I'm hoping he comes back with a good attitude. Hopefully all is well with him, but for the meantime I will enjoy the show with the rest of the crew.

I agree 100% with Anonymous #1. There are times I just want to reach into the radio and strangle Dave. He needs to stop interrupting everyone when they are trying to get their point across. Bring back the "OLD" Dave please!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree. I hope the on air bullying comes to an end. The bickering and shaming feels like two adolescent siblings getting uncivil. Keep it funny fellas. That's what we love about you.

Lee Martin said...

wow..... First off this is about Dave coming back, and I would like to say welcome back Dave we missed you. for the rest who want to rant about the Politacal views, that has been part of the show for years, and it has not been over the top.... DSC keep doing what you doing.

Toni Robinson said...

I don't fault Boyer. That's always been his role and the bit. But Dave is often uninformed and it does really irritate me. Chainsaw is awesome but there is still one thing about him that still bugs me. He and Dave are still slightly homophobic and I don't like the constant going straight to the stereotypical lisp for humor. Once in awhile is ok, but they overdo it. And when they express that they are skeeved out by watching something like Behind the Candleabra or Broke Back Mountain to the point that they won't watch it is very immature and, well... homophobic.

I am just glad Dave is coming back because no one has anything close to his talent. No one has mentioned the "d" word and I wonder if that is what has caused his apparent moods that some of you mention. Look folks, just be glad he is coming back. Think back to those many months without them on the air at all - that was brutal. They are like a lifeline for me, so welcome him back with open arms and don't judge!

bill said...

well, welcome back dave. but, I do agree with anonymous, all of the fill in d-j's have been great. sam the cooking guy had a tough start, but ended up great. I think of all of them I liked larry the best. great talent, and he didn't pick on the crew. as a mater of fact they all seemed to get along fantastic, and when larry did jab at boyer, it was all in fun. I didn't think the crew was having too much fun the last couple of months. I did notice the change in dave's voice also. as far as the political side of it, they seem to have a problem with only one side. and refuse to blame the other side when it is wrong. hopefully they can get it back together at some time soon. have enjoyed this week also phil is a real pro.

Before Dave left, they had only recently started doing phone bits again, and they were brief. They went months without doing even one. And a couple of months ago Shelly left the show after the first 10 minutes after she got into it with Dave and Boyer. Then you've also got to wonder about the incident with Dave breaking his hand when he hit his chair. Who does that unless you're really upset and maybe have issues?

Anonymous said...

I do like listening to the DSC but Dave has become kind of a cranky, disinterested guy. Super talented and quick but does not listen and therefore misunderstands a lot of concepts and has become very dismissive. Too bad. He is so great at what he does. Reminds me a little of Howard Stern who over the years became bitter, dismissive and a bit too egotistical. Dave, glad you are coming back but lighten up man, tone down the ego, listen to people instead of deciding you already know what they are going to say.

Anonymous said...

I strongly agree with Anonymous @ Sept 12, 2013 at 2:00PM. I also feel like Dave and the rest of the crew could have some really deep and meaningful conversations if Dave didn't make it his job to shoot down another person's opinion on the spot. There have been a lot of times where I thought Dave would embrace or agree with an opinion of another crew member, but he didn't say it first so its wrong by default. I do love the DSC though. They have had a huge impact on their listener's lives. I was super motivated by Ruth66 and Chris Boyer when they lost all that weight on Metafast. I saw the before and after pictures and decided that I also needed to lose weight. I lost a little over 30 lbs because I was motivated by the DSC crew. They also bring by to tears with the 12 days of Christmas. I hope the DSC keeps going strong for a very long time. Bring Elaina back!

Anonymous said...

I enjoy the show more when they engage the listening audience; Dump Boyer - he's so negative! Mornings are difficult enough without that attitude.

Anonymous said...

Re Anonymous #1:

Have you guys listened recently?

Dave has moved left after the election. Two years ago Dave was much more rightwing, which was good for the overall balance of the show since Shelley and Ruth are very leftwing, and Chain typically makes leftwing arguments.

Also, Dave has become perpetually irritated with Boyer. He interrupts him and puts words in his mouth constantly. Nowadays, even if Boyer says something Dave agrees with, Dave will never say "I agree". Instead, he attacks Boyer for not "doing something about it". This is an absurd argument because Boyer is doing the most effective things he can -- voting and informing his fellow citizens.

D, S, and C are all expendable. Chris Boyer is fascinating. A host that allows Boyer to speak uninterrupted is a good host. I was surprised how little I missed the Dave of late with all these guest hosts.

No idea where Dave is. I hope he and his family are all well. I also hope the returning Dave will be more like the Dave of a year or two ago than the Dave of a month or two ago.

I love DSC. I miss Dave. I have enjoyed the guest hosts. All these years of listening to DSC, they are like family. I can't help but wonder what happened to Dave. I googled Dave's name and it said he was divorced. We have not heard Nicole on the show in a long time or Dave even mention her. Like it is any of our business. His dad recently broke his leg. Maybe he took a turn for the worse. I just pray Dave and his family are ok and the show can go on...

Anonymous said...

I hope that at least one good thing comes from Dave's absence--that the DSC does NOT need to run BEST OF shows. Guest hosts can fill in just fine. There is never any reason they should ever run a "best of" show again.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Beth's daddy has passed away. Rest in peace Jack.

Anonymous said...

dave has serious anger and drinking issues

dave injured himself badly (related to above)

there were severe marriage problems leading to divorce

all nasty situations - hoping everything will be resolved but my hunch is the crew will play it as "nothing is wrong, personal leave, end of story"

Nicole Rickards said...

Wow. Lots of opinions out there. I can't wait for my husband to get back to work so he can clarify for everyone. And no we aren't getting a divorce. Way to jump to that conclusion. I mean really? It is also funny to me that the strongest "opinions" come from "anonymous" people. Sack up if you've got so much to say and write your name.
All I know is I'm excited for Monday and to the DSC, I LOVE YOUR SHOW! I especially love the D part.

It was indeed a very sad day a while back (eight years, Dave said-I'm inferring here) when we heard that Dave's fist wife had died very suddenly. One thing I do know if that he loved her very much. If Beth's father died, it would be like losing Beth all over again in a way. For some people it affects then that way. If he died slowly, that would indeed affect Dave's online personality, if people believe he was behving differently than usual. Dave has had the wonderful opportunity to find love again, and judging from those wedding pictures, it was magical! Everyone pre-grieves and grieves differently, so until the story is fully known-and who is to say we deserve to invade someone's privacy?-pray for Dave and Dave's family. It's the human thing to do, even if his four weeks remain a mystery for all ages.

Tony Mason said...

Yo Dave, if you're reading all this shit (and I sincerely hope you aren't, knowing how comments piss you off) - I've got a welcome back jingle ready to roll if you want it for Monday. Let me know!

Toni Robinson said...

Nicole! I don't know where any divorce info came from. I googled pretty extensively and couldn't find a thing. I also think that Jack died some time ago.

I think there are so many Anonymous's here because they didn't create a Blogger login. I have one that the computer recognized and automatically attached my name.

I think Dave can take the honest feedback. I think a lot of us thought it might just be ourselves overreacting and I've been surprised to learn from here and another yuku board I belong too that we have all noticed exactly the same changes in Dave and the show.

I really do hope he will be forthcoming next week. Not just about his absence, but about the reason his demeanor and its affect on the show changed this past year or so

He is a terrific talent and he makes my 90 minute walk and gym workout bearable.

Can't wait for Dave to come back!

Just my 2 cents though--

1) 50 year old guys referring to women as "chicks" is weird.

2) The whole Boyer/Elana thing creeps me out.

I'm three months behind on the podcasts so I didn't know Dave was absent. His father-in-law passed away a while back because Dave has talked about it several times. Also I'm sure Dave isn't reading these posts because in a recent podcast he talked about why he took his Facebook down. It's because of the gutless people who post things anonymously who don't have the guts to say it to his face. Like his wife says, sack up or keep it to yourself. Dave has always been open about his life, I'm sure he will explain it on his return.

Clint Ferreira said...

Glad to hear the big chair will have Dave back soon. It was interesting to see Nicole chime in. I too noticed some strong words coming from anonymous. Not that any of you know or care about who I am, but my name is there. For all those that don't like certain things or personalities on radio, TV, church, or any other place; find something you do like. This isn't one of those sarcastic statements. There are tons of sources of entertainment that would love to have you as a listener. Try some others out. I do enjoy the DSC. I am not a daily devoted listener as I once was, but that is OK. I still listen, and if it is funny or entertaining I stay longer. when it isn't, I surf around s bit. Long story short, I'm pleased all is well with the man and his family.

Toni Robinson said...

Oops, I take that back. It's because I am always logged on to google+ that my name shows.

There are several Anonymous's that have been posting.

One more thing regarding all the comments and rumours here--what else is to be expected when a popular morning host suddenly disappears from the radio with no explanation?

Jimmy (Said with high pitch voice) said...

The show changed a few months ago when, as Dave describes it, "A Whole New World" happened. Now they have to,"Get to the Chopper" instead of letting the show grow and have dialogue between everyone. Being stuck with the quarter hour time constraints has been the biggest issue for my listening pleasure!

I hope all is well with Dave and his entire family. Monday will be great!

I’ve been a fan of the show since the mid-90’s. Not sure if that gives me enough credibility or not... but here goes my two cents:

I would like to believe that most of the Dave-detractors on this thread aren’t coming (solely) from a hate-mongering perspective. Their words may sound harsh, but I figure that most people reading these comments and taking time to add to them are doing so because they DID notice a change in Dave and the show and they DO hope that he comes back strong and vibrant and that such a change would denote either a lack of stress or else and injection of joy into his life... and, by extension, into our own.

That said, I HAVE noticed the change as many others in this thread have also noticed... and I am writing because I love the show and hope for its return to the jovial four hours into which I used to invest myself every morning. The truth is that Dave HAS been gruffer for quite a while. When the Mikey Show was in full swing, I found myself cracking up to their bits and chemistry while the DSC was unsigned, and I changed allegiances; my hour-long commute was so enjoyable that that I’d check in on the DSC only during the commercial breaks of the Mikey Show – even after Mikey left. Unfortunately, it seemed like Dave would spend so much time cracking on Boyer that I would feel uncomfortable for the whole crew as I sat behind the wheel. It sounded abusive, at times. After a while it seemed that Shelley would acquiesce and join in on the beatdown, and I’d often feel bad for Boyer. I found myself often rooting for Dave to listen to the opposing viewpoint. Chainsaw at times seemed like a mediator, or at least attempted to diffuse tension. Was I imagining that?

What shocked me was when – on occasion – it seemed the vitriol was aimed at Ruth. It seemed that Dave was unable to control his anger or bitterness and would lash out in an erratic fashion; I often wondered if he was upset at his cast mates, his contract, his personal life, etc. I introduced somebody to the show one morning, and within an hour she was asking why he was so mean to people... and that’s not the Dave I always *knew*. The past few weeks I’ve enjoyed the show more – not because the “big chair” had a new personality, but because the entire crew just seemed more upbeat and each seemed to contribute more equally and without animosity. It MIGHT be that they were all on their best behavior with a new person on the team... but at least it was enjoyable. I even changed back from The Show.

Even if it’s not pleasant to hear, I guess I’m just saying that a change in Dave was noticeable to many of his fans. Was he always a little bit on edge? Perhaps! Maybe it was always there and I just never really noticed it before.

I, for one, hope that WHATEVER the reason for his absence (yes, it’d be nice to hear why he was gone... but, no, it’s not really our business unless he makes it so) he does come back refreshed. Whether it was a tragic event, or a needed head-straightening, I definitely wish the best of luck to him, his family, and the show. I intend no disrespect or accusation with this diatribe... merely expressing the opinions of a long-time listener. I hope they help more than hurt.

O, and my name is Michael Valadez; I don’t have an account here.

Well said Michael V.

This is not meant to be meanspirited...just honest opinion. It seems Dave's behavior, anger issues and physical decline are symptoms of a far deeper problem...and I wouldn't be surprised if it was an illness very similar to a "friend" he turned on as did his cohorts. True viciousness. Dave hurt many many people who didn't deserve it. Curious to see if he has been humbled and reaches out to make amends for his actions. Will wait and see.

I agree 100% with Michael V. I am anonymous #1 in this thread and I was offering my opinion on changes over the show that many have observed. I did it not to rag on Dave et al., but as part of this public discussion on a show that many of us have followed and enjoyed for years. I know Nichole got ticked at the anonymous listings of many of us, but I don't agree that staying anonymous means I have no sack (*checks* yep...still there)or a right to an opinion on a radio program broadcast on public airways. I don't have a job that requires me to be in the public eye and would prefer that my name not be plastered all over the internet. Does this mean I can't voice an opinion? I also get that there is a fine line between critique and criticism, and Nichole was protecting her family. It must be hard to read this stuff no matter how it is offered. Unfortunately, from talk on the show this morning, it sounds like frequent calls for "more fun, less rants" were being dismissed as coming from insecure people with unhappy lies. That makes me sad.

Really, I don't want to harp on negativity. I'm glad Dave realized he needed to make a change in his life and took steps to get healthy and get back on track. Kudos! I am also VERY glad he is back.

So when a caller got through and said 'Bring back Larry Himmel" (Which seems to a common sentiment) Dave responds by saying "Let's bring back Art Linkletter." Uh Dave, I don't know how to explain it to you but Larry Himmel was great radio. You are an unhappy, surly malcontent. Himmel makes you feel good and he's a great story teller and he's pretty damn sharp and topical and knows his town. Dave is all about his creature comforts. and repeating "Bob Filner is not a robot." Really Dave? Too bad rehab didn't fix your underlying problem of being mean and abusive. I will admit I listened. But I also listened to the new morning guy on KOGO. He's a lot better than the last guy, but he isn't exactly compelling.

Anonymous said...

I didn't miss him because I don't listen to him any more. A shame really because that team (the collective group) had talent but his (dave) swelled head and condesending attitude are a clear turn off. Mean spirited to his core, he can be equally capable of crapping on his fellow workers of listeners. Distatesful to listen to. I don't miss him at all.

Anonymous said...

This past weekend, I ventured an hunch that substance abuse issues may be at the core of Dave's more recent demeanor and hiatus from the airwaves, but my comment was "moderated" (read censored), and fair enough, it's your blog, not mine. Just know that no matter what opinion your readers may offer, the eventual reality most often is more harsh. I hope he does read his "mail", and realize that maybe it could be time to take his grumpy-old man persona off mornings, and over to a certain AM station (rhymes with LOGO) that seems to reflect and celebrate his midlife, pro-wealth views now...and that way he'd have a much easier time getting an interview with his guys, Mitt, Roger, and Rush.

I personally found Dave cracking me up on his first day back. However since then it seems things are slipping back a little each day. I'm no psychoanalyst, but maybe it has something to do with Dave's age. What we find cracking us up when we are we are young often doesn't work so well any longer as we graduate into middle age. Our tastes and priorities just seem to naturally and gradually change. Some try to fight it and some just accept it as how life is and go with the flow. It is obvious Dave is still plenty sharp and has plenty of talent so I'm sure many will continue to be loyal listeners. I wish all them the best. We all have choices.

I enjoy your radio site. Keep up the good work! I thought I would share some thoughts on DSC. Well it seems business as usual at the show. Dave is still, negative, materialistic and condescending. The rest of the crew are still kissing his butt and sound just silly. And I couldn't believe it when Emily said how all negative posts on their site were immediately deleted by her!! Wow...talk about spin control. They all were whining because they thought listeners weren't supporting them enough. I couldn't believe what I heard. Boohoo. Well I tried to listen but I am done. It became clear this week that they are past their prime. The diehards are trying hard not to believe it..but deep down many know it. San Carlos ex-listener

I haven't listened to DSC for many years. After Beth died it was never the same. And then when they moved to jack I tuned in and found it horrible. Dave treats Boyer like he used to treat abromowitz. Abromowitz eventually quit doing the show cuz he couldn't take it anymore. Dave has always been an arrogant person but it used to be funny now it's just boring and mean. It makes me feel uncomfortable listening to them fight.

This surely is a show that is way past its prime.
I miss Chainsaw. He's truly brilliant. I haven't been able to catch him since I stopped being a regular listener a quite a while ago. I can't stand Dave's political bits with the anti-intellectual rants so I had to find alternatives.
I've tuned them in a couple of times since, but within 15 minutes or so I'm done.
