Where in the world is Dave Rickards?

Joe Nelson said...

Sorry. All we are told is 'He is away from the big chair. PD Mike O'Reilly will fill in until then. Hey, thanks for reading! -Joe

Anonymous said...

Any news on Dave Rickards?? Can't believe he's been gone this long with no explanation of his absence.

Joe Nelson said...

Nothing new to report. -Joe

Anonymous said...

Thanks Joe -

Even if you did have something to report, which you very well may (it is a small community after all) - I'd think it would be wise that you not say anything. Dave's a big boy on the block and for someone to report anything that he isn't willing to do disclose himself, would be, I think, not in the best interest of the messenger.

Joe Nelson said...

Not my first day on the job. I know that.

Toni Robinson said...

Still, it's not an unreasonable request from the public. Contract? Must be, it's gone on too long to be anything else. I think it's silly that they all have to pretend when they sign on every morning and ignore the elephant in the room.

Anonymous said...

While Dave has long been a significant presence I have found myself enjoying the DSC Show more without him. The rest of the crew seems happier and enjoying themselves more. Hence I am enjoying them more.

Anonymous said...

I doubt it's anything contractual - they all signed on at the same time (except Shelly).

If it goes beyond this week, then it's probably understandable that people would assume something bad either personally, professionally, and/or medically has happened.

Let just hope he's okay and that he's back in the chair on Tuesday!

We miss your show! :)

wendacious said...

I was thinking the same. I stopped listening...too negative and uncomfortable. Felt sorry for the crew. Love Sammy though, wish this could be his permanent gig!

Ken Reynolds said...

It is getting hard to enjoy the show even though I think the substitutes have done an excellent job. The elephant in the room is just getting bigger and bigger. While enjoyable (sort of) the show is clearly missing the charm? and quick wit of Rickards. I would not be listening without him being there......

Anonymous said...

Sam said this morning that Larry Himmel would be doing the show next week. Who next??? Bob Filner?!?!? I hear he's out of a job now. I think they owe their devoted fans some kind of explanation at least. It's somewhat of a slap in the face to all of us to say absolutely nothing at all.

Tim Rogers said...

Listening to Thursday's (29 Aug) podcast today (I live outside SD county) and just heard Sam mention that Larry Himmel will be sitting in the "big chair" next week. If that is the case, this will make a full month that Dave has been out (one week Best Of, one week Mike O'Reilly, one week Sam, and one week Larry Himmel). Aside from wondering why Dave is away, I wonder if these substitutes are either showing Dave that anyone can do it, and he's not special, or if they are trying out replacements for this morning crew because Dave has indicated a desire to retire. Pure speculation on my part.

Anonymous said...

Start hitting the show with a "wheeeeeerrrres Daaaaaaaave??" bandit. If enough people do it, maybe they'll answer us. The show is not the same without Dave. The rest of the crew does seem to be more outgoing but I think they are just trying to fill the void left in Dave's absence.

Anonymous said...

I hope Dave and his family are OK.

As this continues, I will be more suspicious of KFMB-FM management team??

Pete in PITTSBURGH

Also, I won't be buying the $9.99 per month _SC app (Daveless) Which will be the only way that I can hear the show, back here! "GO BOLTS"

Anonymous said...

Ditto on buying the app without Dave; the show has lost its edge. The guest hosts have done what they can, but this was always Dave's show. I find myself missing puppets, especially VITH.

I just hope everybody is okay and that this isn't another family tragedy. If he wants to retire, maybe he can train a replacement like Riki Rachtman did all those years ago on Loveline?

Anonymous said...

Sam did a great job, but like everybody else, I miss Dave! I hope that he and his family are okay and he is back in the big chair soon.

Anonymous said...

I actually like sam.

Anonymous said...

I thought Sam did a great job. He is a natural.

Anonymous said...

I just saw that they extended the free trial of the podcast until October. I am also outside San Diego and would not subscribe without Dave. I suspect his absence may be the reason for the extension.

I also just heard the Larry Himmel comment on the podcast. I agree that Filner should be up next in the lineup.

It's gotta be a contract thing. Maybe the others were happy with the negotiations and signed on again. Who knows?

I have been listening to DSC since they were the Dawn Patrol in the
80's. As loyal listeners we deserve some sort of explanation.

Anonymous said...

Too much of a coincidence that Dave has disappeared as soon as people started voicing their opposition (rightly so) about the b.s. subscription service. And, now it's been pushed back from 3 September to October.

Anonymous said...

What's the subscription thingy you're talking about? The fact they're still calling it DSC makes me feel as tho they'll resolve whatevers going on. I thought for a moment he just took his privileged wife on a killer vacation. Emily slipped the Wednesday before he left when they were talking about the Seahawks charger game when he was complaining about not being invited to the charger game. she said something to the effect that he would be busy anyway, and wouldn't be available to go to the game even if he wanted to.

Anonymous said...

I doubt it is anything contractual. My gut says it is something in his personal life that has gone sideways, either a separation or (God forbid) a death in the immediate family.

Although, it does seem like they are test driving new hosts instead of sticking with one sub...

Anonymous said...

I have been listening since bring back Berger & Prescott days. Was pissed when Dave Rickards came on the show (for about a year). (but he grew on me and I thought the show got better thanks to all the crew and Dave's leadership and type "A" personality. I believe it must be something very important and hope it is a good thing and not a bad thing. I know it is serious because Dave loves the fans and his crew. Sad thing is I wanted to call in to the show to thank "RiCHards" for telling his story (many times) of his wife passing years ago. My wife passed 3 weeks ago (damn breast cancer)! Dave let this be the thank you. Hope all is well and God Bless.

Anonymous said...

To answer my own question, I found that you now have to buy an app to listen online and even then, it ends up being a day old show you get? I can understand buying the app so that you don't have to hear commercials and so that you can hear the thing from beginning to end no matter when you wake up (both bonuses), but to not get today's show "live" if you want? I would think with an app, there'd be a way to choose "listen live" or "listen from the start of the show" and that with today's technology, they'd be able to make this happen on the day of broadcast.

Anyway, I was wondering if his absence had something to do with licensing (does he own the show, personally or do the three of them own the rights or parts thereof?)... if they're going syndication (and they've talked about that in the past), it might have something to do with his not being there, too, if that kind of thing is in the works. He has, however, said that he wants to keep it a local show.

Toni Robinson said...

I doubt Dave would retire. He has 2 kids in college and is probably looking at grad school for them. And none of those lazy journalists over at the U-T has even floated a "Where's Dave" mention.

Anonymous said...

I, too, am a long-time listener (since Dawn Patrol days), and it's very disappointing that listeners are being kept in the dark. I've decided not to listen to Jack FM anymore. I'll check back every once I a while to see if Dave is back.

Steve N' Nic said...

If its not bad enough that Dave is gone they seem to be staring the show later and later in the morning and it leaves me searching for another one to listen to and they rest are'nt that good 105.3 ughh and if i can get 95.5 were's Dave

JD said...

There are certain things I miss with Dave fine. Specifically his puppets. Other than that his banter back and forth with Boyer and any one else that disagrees with anything he says was getting really tired. He definitely wants it to be known that it's his show by interrupting the others during a rebuttal or opinion just to shoot it down before they can finish. It actually made me change the station on more than one occasion cuz it was putting me in a bad mood! I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of what the show is intending to accomplish with its listeners. Come to think of it, I actually commented to a friend a couple months ago that Dave had seemed to be on a weeks long period and generally has just seemed crabby fir a long time. Maybe he's known something has been coming for awhile now. Who knows

Anonymous said...

Listening to Sam the Cooking Guy for 4 hours is like listening to Sam the Cooking Guy for 8 hours.

Larry Himmel is OK as he has a lot of interesting stories that can fill a week or so, but Dave is the main gear in this show. Cookie, as Larry pointed out is THE most talented & humorous guy in San Diego radio, the biggest cog in the system of gears. If Cookie ever left the show, THEN you could close up shop.

But come on back Dave, with you gone, I have to sit & think up band names on my on.

Toni Robinson said...

Anonymous - very sorry for the loss of your wife.

Toni Robinson said...

And by the way Joe, this thread is the most action you've gotten on this site. Any way you can nudge someone over at the U-T (Karla Peterson, George Varga?) to use their credentials to get some kind of story? Oh, oh! Chris Cantore. Surely he knows something with his contacts.

Anonymous said...

As a long time DSC listener I have to respect that Dave is doing what is right for his friends and family. Family includes loyal listeners.

Have faith that when the time is ready we will know why Dave was gone for so long.

Joe Nelson said...

Actually the hits are about the same. Very strong. If there is a bump in anything, its that there ar emore comments for this story, than others. Other than that, Just another day at the office. As far as the UT goes, I have no doubts they are looking into it. But I am holding steady that the info that I know stays with me until it is verified and approved. Certain things are too damaging just to throw out there. I am not 'that' kind of writer. But know, when the time comes, I will have it here.
-Joe

Anonymous said...

I've been a listener and fan since just about the first day of the show. I wish Dave the best, whatever is going on. I hope it is just a coincidence that Dave's first wife passed away almost exactly 10 years ago to the day that Dave went missing from the big chair.

Anonymous said...

The longer Dave is gone...the more I listen to Howard Stern.

Anonymous said...

I find the show very awkward with a co-host. You just can't have the DSC without the D.
I don't care who they put in the 'big chair'....without Dave, the morning show sucks. There is no chemistry with an outsider. These various co-hosts may have been good guests on occasion, but none can fill the shoes of Dave.

Anonymous said...

Joe, can you at least tell us if Dave is ok?

Joe Nelson said...

I have no reason to believe otherwise.

Anonymous said...

Been a listener to the DSC for 15-20 years..seemingly forever.

In the past few months, I noticed that Dave wasn't his usual fun, easy-going self. He even seemed mean-spirited at times. Did anyone else notice this? I wonder if whatever is going on in his personal life carried over to the show? Still a big fan of the show, and looking forward to him returning.

Sam the Cooking Guy really shined in Dave's absence. I was never a big fan of Sam's before he filled in, but now I am. He was a natural.

Thanks for the great job you are doing on this website.

Anonymous said...

Glad to know you "don't know otherwise"... for some reason, that's comforting, I suppose. My partner mentioned he might be in rehab. Other than a contractural thing, I can't imagine what else would be so hush hush. He's always painted himself as an occasional, social drinker, however and Bromo's alcoholism was hard for him as a good friend, so I didn't think it was that. What I am certain of (and I've posted about this before), is that his leaving was a planned thing (and based on a gaffe Emily tried to cover for last week when Sam was on) his return is open ended and could be a day to day thing. For all we know he could be back tomorrow or next Wednesday, for example.

Anonymous said...

I think Larry Himmel has been very funny. Cookie is pretty much the only reason I listen anymore. Dave is very quick witted and I love that, but I feel he has become very pompous over the years. There is almost an elitist tone in his voice. Nonetheless, I hope all is well with Dave.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad for even the limited information on this thread. As a listener since 1993 and with the past sudden disappearances of Dave (Beth's death) and the crew (contractual), we long-time fans are really left up in the air and imagining the worst.

I definitely agree with the Anonymous above who said that Dave got extremely mean-spirited and was on a razor's edge from going off. Poor Boyer bore quite a brunt of Dave's wrath just by Boyer doing his usual schtick. My wife and I would listen to the show together each morning and comment on the very changed show dynamics.

It seemed obvious that there was some kind of big pressure put on the show before the guest hosts started, and it was nice to be back to a lighter mood after Riley's guest hosting stint was done and Sam and Larry could fill in. Nice job Sam and Larry and we hope to hear a happy Dave soon!

Anonymous said...

I thought I was the only one who noticed that Dave seemed to be on a month long period...I too would turn it off because the way he was behaving got to be too much. I really enjoyed Sam...I am sure when Dave gets back we will all get a scolding that his absence is none of our business!!!

Clint Ferreira said...

Come back soon Dave!!!

Anonymous said...

is it possible that the new podcast money collection app is not being shared with the on-air talent, resulting in financial re-negotiations

Anonymous said...

I know where Dave is. It is a personal matter and if he wants to divulge when he returns Sept. 16, he can. But the important thing to note is a/this crew hasn't sounded this good in years than they did this week with Larry Himmel, and b/Dave can sound very self-centered and unhappy, and c/Himmel would be a much better permanent anchor if he even would want to do it.

Anonymous said...

Personally, if I were Jack FM, I would find Rich Beara (not sure how spell his last name) and bring him in to replace Dave. Rich was a major part of the DSC show being successful and he would be a perfect fit to replace Dave. As many listeners have stated, Dave as become arrogant and has become aggravating to listen to. If he comes back, I hope he will be more humble. You can tell how much more relaxed the others have been in his absence and they seem to be having much more fun. No matter what, I would look to bring Rich back. The show desperately a shot in the arm and he can provide it.

Anonymous said...

I think Dave is mean to Ruthie

Anonymous said...

These people keep secrets better than the NSA.

Anonymous said...

I think Dave's been unnecessarily mean to Boyer (especially in the last month +). Sure Boyer can be annoying from time to time (I actually like him), but sheesh! He's just doing his "bit" and he's getting his balls busted.

A few of my friends today said "rehab" as soon as I gave them the low down and one person said that maybe he's on some mood stabilizers now and he's giving it some time to see how his mind responds before going back on air.

Mrs Pickle said...

Wherever Dave is I hope he's ok. He's been snarky and dickish the last few months so I have been rolling my eyes a lot when my husband listens. We both loved Sam the Cooking Guy. I'd listen to him any day

Anonymous said...

I agree, Dave's been nasty for a while now. I hope he's well, but I wouldn't mind if he didn't return. Like Sam the best so far!

Anonymous said...

I thought that BLAUER did an excellent job this morning!!!

Anonymous said...

.....Give the guy a break already......the man has never missed a beat in OVER 23 years here in San Diego.......and a lot of you are ready to write him off for some clown holding a cooking pan.....

Anonymous said...

I too am enjoying the show much more with Dave gone. I have turned off the show many times during the last month or so before he left because he was so pompous and rude to the crew that it made me uncomfortable. I love Boyer and Ruthie. They seem to be the only two that stand up to Dave. If/when he does back I hope he changes his attitude cause he is not entertaining or enjoyable to listen to anymore. Love you Sam!

Anonymous said...

Nobody is perfect. Everyone has rough seasons. Hopefully Dave is in good health and spirits when he returns.

Anonymous said...

I've noticed that ever since he remarried his tone has been more nasty than snarky. Sometimes he's just plain mean and very condescending. I hope he comes back but like he was BF (before Nicole)

Anonymous said...

If Dave comes back hopefully he is back to his old self. Boyer is funny in his off the wall way, past few months Dave just hammered him everytime he opened his mouth.

Anonymous said...

Never cared for Nicole, myself. When they had their time off of KGB, a lot of boards had fans lambasting Dave for marrying Nicole or having Nicole on so much and talking about how much money they spend and her expensive hobbies, etc. A lot people thought Dave must not know his blue collar, hard working audience who sometimes live paycheck to paycheck likely didn't want to be reminded of how high on the hog the Rickards were able to live. Since they've been at Jack, she hardly gets a mention, so he must have gotten the message. Personally, I don't have a lot of respect for a woman who has no little ones to raise who chooses not to work because she doesn't have to.
I too, really enjoyed Larry from last week, thought Phil did a good job today and I do like Sam, I wouldn't want him to be permanent.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the other comments -- Dave was oftentimes unfunny, which is a cardinal sin in his business. Many times he seemed to be trying to channel Rush Limbaugh or some other right-wing commentator. Sometimes he would shut down the rest of the team, go on a rant, and I'd get so fed up that I just switched to another station.

The other folks do seem a lot looser and more participative with Dave gone. Whatever his deal is, I hope he comes back as the nice, funny Dave we used to have.

Anonymous said...

Wow and here I thought I was alone in thinking that Dave's pompous and elitist attitude has been out of control lately. He's been downright dismissive and disrespectful to everyone else on the show. Hope he reads this board and wakes up! (But... I love your show!!)

Toni Robinson said...

Oh come on, he remarried a couple of years ago so that argument doesn't fly. And what does someone's worthiness of respect have to do with working? To paraphrase someone, it's the content of their character, not the presence of a pay stub. His speaking of fun things they do doesn't bother me one bit and I live paycheck to paycheck.

Anonymous said...

Check out the video on the website www.CBS8.com titled "The DSC adds an initial -- "H" for Himmel". All the DSC crew just raves about how good of a job Larry Himmel did. Just seems like they're building him up for possibly taking over Dave's spot??? Who knows but just seems wierd that they'd do a video about it.

Anonymous said...

I miss Ruth's voice in the head.

Anonymous said...

As a long time listener, I must say that the elephant in the room, to me, is the "lightness" in the room. Larry =funny AND cool. Good chemestry. They all seem much happier. Even Ruth seems to have "blossomed". Is that possible?? Lol

Anonymous said...

That's what I never understood... when Dave had to be off for a day or was the one to call in sick, why should everyone have to take a day off? I know they're contracted, so they only have to work so many days a year, but, I always thought a "substitute teacher" would be fun for a change here and there.

It's kind of a shame that Sam, Larry, and Phil are all getting love and that it's shining a light on how maybe we don't need the "D" in the DSC to continue listening to the show (or even loving it). To echo many others here, the rest of the crew seem so much better and although I like some of Dave's puppets, I wish he'd back off a bit more and let Shelly, Ruth, Boyer, and Chain be a bigger part of the show than they have under his watch.

Anonymous said...

I think the station beached him

Anonymous said...

Dave may have had family trouble. That would weigh on a man.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the posts here saying that things have been uncomfortable over the last few months with Dave (and Shelly at times) being quite a bit more mean and flat out rude to some of the others on the show. I have really enjoyed hearing all of the guest hosts (especially Sam) and the mood seems definitely lighter for them all. I hope everything is alright with Dave and that if/when he comes back he brings the fun side of himself with him. He's proven to be an exceptional host for many years and I'd like to see him back and happy.

Anonymous said...

There is NOBODY that can fill his shoes......Dave is the best in the business at what he does........please just let the guy breathe a little man, and so quickly do people jump ship, and show such lack of faith in a guy that has been rock steady in this town for 23 years....all the others that filled in for him are simply amateurs at best

Anonymous said...

I've been listening to the DSC for about 20 years and have also noticed the downturn in Dave's mood. He seems mean and pompous, and I've started turning the show off in the morning because listening before work makes me feel stressed. Since Dave's been gone, I've been enjoying the show again. I enjoyed both Sam and Larry as hosts. Hope Dave's okay and I appreciate the years of entertainment he provided, but this listener wouldn't mind if he retired so I can enjoy the humor and personalities of Shelly, Chainsaw, and especially Ruth and Boyer. Glad to see so many other listeners feel the way I do! I thought it was just me.

Anonymous said...

Have you all seen the ratings lately? Looks like their old station has passed them up recently. Maybe Dave has "worn out his welcome" to the San Diego radio listening audience?

Anonymous said...

I am concerned about Dave's parents. I know they each have had some health issues recently. Hope all is well.

Anonymous said...

Here is what cracks me up....I can guarantee that half you idiots writing in with negative comments about Dave, WORK on a lame morning show in town, and are jealous and just hoping that he never comes back. I know this guy, he WILL return, and will NEVER be funnier......and your piece of crap dirge show will continue to be awful.....and boring....
Save the energy you are wasting by spewing out awful stuff about him, and work on your own self.

Anonymous said...

At first, I thought the same thing about Dave's parents--except this has gone on for over a month and I doubt they'd have to keep that such a big secret.

Hey Toni.....Kiss me

Anonymous said...

I too am of the opinion that Dave is not a happy camper these days. The show has gotten very hostile and angry. It seems that the whole show revolves around how to call Boyer a liar and get all over his case for saying anything. Since Dave is the leader, all others follow suit and it is just not fun to listen too. I too have turned it off. I was very surprised to turn it on and find Larry Himmel hosting it for a week. The show has been enjoyable to listen to again and they have stopped all the fighting and bickering. Hopefully Dave is okay and things are better with him. I miss old Dave.

Anonymous said...

I miss Dave. I hope everything in his world is okay.

Anonymous said...

Heard on the show this morning that Dave's coming back on Monday. I hope that they talk at least briefly about where he's been, I've been quite curious.

Anonymous said...

I don't believe Dave and Nicole are still married, so that shouldn't be the reason for his absence.

Anonymous said...

Attention all you people...Get a clue....get a life

Anonymous said...

I agree. Dave's private life is his and his alone.

Anonymous said...

Hilarious to think that Dave's life is uber private while he maintains a public spotlight in one of America's largest cities. He disappears, but isn't dead or injured providing assumptions, and anyone in the know holds the *secrets* close to their chest. Whatever the news it'd better be epic to justify the secrecy, otherwise any time he starts bitching about public figures wanting their privacy he's just a damn hypocrite.

Anonymous said...

I disagree completely that Dave's private life is his and his alone. He has milked his private life for his show, paraded it out for everyone in radio land, and used it for his gain. So no, it is not his and his alone. He lost that right the minute he called home to Beth for the first time, and every single time after that in taking calls from his daughters, and second wife. Like Dave has said himself. If he had a magic wand, then every time a celebrity bitched abut the loss of their privacy then POOF! You're back to pumping gas or waiting on tables.

Anonymous said...

I haven't listened to the show since last year. From the comments here it does sound like the show is mirroring the fractured state I believe the country currently finds itself.

I have been waking up to the DSC for many years to start my busy day. When they went off of the air on the other station, it was like something was taken away from me. Waking up to an alarm was not the same. I can't stand Howard or the or the Mikey show. DSC was real life. When they returned on JACK, it was like being reunited with a long lost family member.
I don't mind Dave talking about his home, money, or his lifestyle. He earned it and deserves it. I don't like how he talks down to his team. He always wants to be right. Treat others as you want to be treated.
Dave, I hope you and your family are ok. Please find the ol Dave we know and loved to listen to. Hurry Back!!!

Anonymous said...

I think we might have heard if Dave and Nicole were on the skids, although we never did get the full story on what happened with Shelley and her (very short lived) second marriage to the solar panel guy... I agree, we're owed a damn good answer. Who the heck knows how they've kept such a tight lid on this "secret". Either the members of the DSC have a lot of respect in the radio community or their so big they've got people scared into keeping their mouth shut. I agree that he is a public persona here in San Diego and whereas it doesn't mean he can't have any kind of private life, he does need to understand that people are going to probe and gossip about him

Finally, and likely, OT, but what is with Boyer and Elena? Are they dating long distance?

Anonymous said...

OK so i have been listening all morning, Dave seemed to brushed over it, where was he? all i heard was i needed to get healthy, so is that rehab?

Anonymous said...

What happened? Did I miss the reason he left?

Anonymous said...

Ok, I only caught the last 15 minutes or so, Dave was doing the bit about a poll where 50% of the men said they'd divorce their wives if they did a specific thing (Correct answer was "gain weight"). It got a bit crazy and out of control, and near the end of it Dave said something like he should go back to rehab, it wasn't as hard. Not sure if he was serious or just mocking some of the speculation that is out there regarding his month long absence.

Anonymous said...

He went to rehab (he made the comment on the show yesterday - 9/17).

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I think its lame. this "family" who he says loves "their show" and has allowed sponsors which have paid him very well over the years to just blow off is wrong.

He mocks the likes off celebrities who do things on the national level, but on a local San Diego level its different?

Did yo hear him on Tuesday how upset he was with Boyer over "rights" ? I have listened to this show for years and I enjoy it, but honestly i think hes burned out and doesnt have the balls to quit because the money is good.

All they do anymore is talk amongst themselves, do $5 quizes which are listener submitted half the time and interviews of guests I rarely care about.

Where is the originality?? What happened to things like Elevator From hell?

I dont know Dave, If you are burned out fine, if you went to rehab fine, we are all human. If you got divorced fine, i get that. If you went to Bermuda for a month fine. If you wer negotiating a contact fine.

The fact is the listeners, who REMEMBER are the reason you have the life you do are entitled to know a little of what happened. Im sick of 12-15 minute commercial breaks, sick of you getting on Boyer for having an opinion. I understand everything has a shelf life and its obvious the shelf life on the show is reaching its time. We know you are a multi millionaire, just bow out gracefully and call it good, stop playing your listeners for the fool and pretending you care about the show.
