Mike Shepard on Dave Mason

By Joe Nelson
A letter from BCA's Mike Shepard on Dave Mason:

It is with very mixed emotions that I (Mike Shepard Programming / Operations Manager) announce the departure of Dave Mason from The Walrus.
Dave has been with the station for over five years as both morning and midday host and  Program Director.
He’s one of our most recognized and beloved personalities, and it’s hard to think of The Walrus without Dave.
Dave has been an integral part of our community as well, playing  key roles with the San Diego Humane Society, KPBS Television, Children’s Hospital and the annual Teddy Bear Drive.
He’s a very special, one-of-a-kind person. And we are going to miss him dearly.
On the other hand, all of us here at The Walrus are proud and delighted  for Dave as he turns the page to an exciting new chapter of his career.
Beginning September 19th, Dave Mason will join K-EARTH in Los Angeles as Assistant Program Director and deejay.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Dave and his family and while we are very sad to see him go, we understand what this means to him professionally and personally.
So, please join me in wishing Dave nothing but the best in his new position. We’ll announce a new midday host soon, but we’ll never replace Dave Mason.
Congratulations Dave!!

We’re gonna miss you.

JN: Saw, what are your thoughts on J.D.?
LH: "Liked him, Got along well with him. He is heading back to political talk shows, where he is really good."

JN: What is the future for your morning show?
LH: "Stay tuned for something unique effective........., I would assume. All I want to do is win, and we will."

Hayworth Departs 1090

Kelly Cole - August 2013 Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The August 2013 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features KPRI's Kelly Cole.
Kelly, thanks for taking your time for the SanDiegoRadio Spotlight!

Joe Nelson:What is your current position/title?
Kelly Cole: I am the Host of Lites-Out on 102.1 KPRI Sunday evenings at 7.  It features 2 hours of Contemporary Jazz, Soulful Vocals, Blues and Fusion.

JN: What are your favorite parts of the job?
KC: I love it all but it really feels good to share all these amazing artists that have such great music and talents and are not being shared on traditional radio any more.

JN: Who are your all time favorite musical artists?
KC: That is pretty impossible to say because there are so many but from my youth I was exposed to Hoytt Axton and Johnny Cash and they will always be in my heart.  James Taylor, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd,  Tom Petty, Areosmith, Ten Years After, Foghat and Bad Co, got me through High School.  Then I spent a year and ½ of weekends spinning 45s at KAMP El Centro and feel in love with the hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s.  Then I was lucky enough to get a gig with Bob O’Connor and Art Good when Lites-Out was getting started and found Fusion and Jazz.  Grover, Jeff Lorber Fusion, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Special EFX,  George Benson, Bobby Caldwell, Al Jarreau, Michael Franks, David Sanborn, Bob James, Jean Luc-Ponty, Phil Upchurch, Peter White, Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun….  I spent hours as a board op playing their music on LP, reading their album covers and listening to Art tell his stories.  I was also excited by Bonnie Raitt,  Basia, Sade, Annie Lennox, Nancy Wilson, Holly Cole, Diana Krall, Mindi Abair, Keiko Matsui and all the empowered ladies.  I am sorry but I just can’t name a few, they all made me feel something special.

JN: And your current favorite?
KC: Right now I am digging Mayer Hawthorne, The Gaddabouts, Spencer Day, the Summer Horns, Keiko Matsui, Jake Shimabukuro, and on top right now has to be Trombone Shorty and Booker T.

JN: Tell me about your personal side.
KC: I am married to Big Mike who also is my producer, we have three kids, Nicole, Nikki and Kris.  4 Grandmonsters Stevie, Sammy, Charlotte and Kylie.

JN: What are your favorite restaurants?
KC: PF Changs, Anthony’s, Phil’s, La Palapa Lakeside, Valley View Buffet and The Kona Kai.

JN: What are your movie interests?
KC: Not really a big movie person, I would rather see live music, anywhere any time.

JN: Do you have any hobbies?
KC: Love to garden and I do some canning, swim, walk and live music.

JN: What are your favorite parts of the city?
KC: OB/Sunset Cliffs, Shelter Island, Julian, Campo and Old Mission Dam.

JN: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
KC: I am a third generation native San Diegan.

SanDiegoRadio - One Year Mark

By Joe Nelson
Today marks the one year anniversary of taking over SDRadio, and eventually shifting over to

It really is a job I enjoy and wouldn't give it up for anything! I have met some tremendous people, and done some exciting things.

I think it's great, when my son was young, I was his little league coach every year. That was 'our thing'.

Now that I have this, it provides a chance for my daughters to be involved, with me, doing photography at the radio events.

I am proud to provide information to the radio community and am humbled by the trust people put into me.

Remember, like I always say. "Let me know if you need anything, I am here for YOU!"

Congrats to the Ramos Family!

By Joe Nelson
Energy 103.7's Hula Ramos and his wife Yoli are expecting another child!
The Ramos family (including big sister Lilyana) is excited, as evidenced by their comments on the Energy page:
We are all very excited and this time around we feel like we can enjoy the pregnancy more. I know that might not sound right because we loved every minute that we were pregnant with Lilyana but when you are experiencing pregnancy for the first time, there is so much you are worried about, so much going on, and so many new things happening that you sort-of forget to “enjoy the pregnancy”. We both feel that since we have gone through pregnancy once, we can relax a bit more(to some extent).
Now for all of you math majors, you may realize that we are sharing our pregnancy early this time around but for good reason. My wife Yoli is already showing and in this day and age of social media, surprises can end up becoming ruined. There are people at my wife’s work who are suspecting something and talking about it! We figured we might as well let the “cat out of the bag” now, so we can do it our way versus letting someone else spoil our great news.
Congratulations! You can read more HERE

Jack FM's Streaming Issues Addressed

By Joe Nelson

After hearing from several friends, and reading many online comments regarding the streaming changes at JackFM, I decided to reach out to Program Director Mike O'Reilly to offer some clarity on the issue. The following is his reply...

HI Joe,

Yes, we're in the midst of a big change with our online streaming which will restrict our stream to San Diego.

We've set up an FAQ page at:

Unfortunately there have been some issues within the county on some mobile devices due to IP & location conflicts.  We are working through those issues and expect to have them remedied soon.

As for those outside of San Diego that love and support the DSC, we're now uploading commercial-free podcasts of the show no later than 11a (pst) via the brand new DSC app.

So it sounds like this is a temporary issue, the page for streaming all things Jack, such as the DSC Show can be found HERE

Thanks Mike.

San Diego, CA – Friday, August 2, 2013 - FM 94/9 is proud to announce the success of Alex's Lemonade Stand 2013. With a pre-determined goal of $12,500 dollars, our expectations were exceeded with a grand total of $14,700 for pediatric cancer research. In our 8th year working with The Miller Family at Alex's Lemonade Stand, we're consistently blown away with the generosity and support of the San Diego community.

A special thanks to all of the businesses at 32nd and Thorn in North Park who donated their time and space to help make this year's Alex's Lemonade Stand the most successful yet. Thanks to Ripe North Park, To Hell in a Handbag, North Park Nursery by Mooch, Rusty Gold Design and Thorn Street Brewery. Also, a big thank you to Hit Dog Hollar, Blackout Party, and School of Rock for their incredible performances. FM 94/9 is PROUD to be associated with such a great cause and we look forward to continuing to grow Alex's Lemonade Stand each year.
