Z90's Rick Moorten Starts Wednesday

By Joe Nelson

SAN DIEGO, CA – Rick Moorten will join Jammin’ Z90.3 starting tomorrow, hosting morning drive weekdays from 5:00 to 10:00 A.M.

Rick returns to San Diego after spending the last four years running the “Wild Wake Up Show” at WILD 101 in Boise, ID.  Prior to that, Rick was an afternoon co-host on Star 94.1, as well as a member of the “Jeff and Jer Showgram.”

“I am beyond thrilled to be coming back to a city I consider my one and only true home!” says Moorten. “I've had a fantastic time working in Boise, a city full of some of the kindest, most considerate, wonderful people you'll ever meet.  This is a great opportunity for me, and the dream job I've been looking for.  I can't wait to get in the chair, get behind the mic, and have at it!”
“Rick’s heart has always been in San Diego and one of my favorite attributes of Rick is his burning desire to marry the market and crush the competition,” says Jammin’ Z90 Program Director R Dub.  “Aside from his magnificent talent, he has a deep-seated determination to win in San Diego.  This was a natural fit for both parties and we’re looking forward to building San Diego’s premier morning program.”

RIP Kidd Kraddick

By Joe Nelson
I was not sure what, if anything to put up in the wake of Kidd Kraddick's sudden death. I decided to capture some thoughts from San Diego radio's people via their Facebook pages. Here are some I found...

John & Tammy's John Flint: "Met and talked to the man once at Morning Show Boot Camp... and was a sponge, listening to everything he had to say, because dammit, you had to to do what I do. Thank you Kidd for being a wonderful abassador for Morning Radio. I will try my hardest to make the mark that you made in your short time with us..."

AJ Machado: "You may have heard the news about the sudden passing of morning DJ Kidd Kraddick, and if you'd never heard of him the news probably didn't affect you. Well, Kidd was one of my earliest inspirations and soneone who influenced me in a lot of ways. So if you've ever listened to my show, you can count yourseld among the MANY people that Kidd reached in one way or another. He will be missed.

Jagger & Kristi's Kristi Jagger: "We are shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely passing of radio's best....Kidd Kraddick. We hoped it was a internet rumor but sadly it's true. Over the years we have been inspired by a man who cared about people deeply and it showed in everything he did on air and off! RIP David Kidd Kraddick"

Jeff & Jer's Tommy Sablan: "R.I.P. Kidd Kraddick. Kidd was a longtime friend of the Jeff and Jer Showgram. He did a morning radio show in Dallas and all over the country. The radio industry and his fans are in shock. He was a talented man! This is Tommy, I met Kraddick about 23 years ago. The day I met him, I watched him walk over to a piano and he sang and played Maybe I'm Amazed. All of us on the showgram will miss him. A few years ago, Kraddick called me to get permission to bring Breaking and Entering Christmas to his Dallas listeners. It was an honor to know his show did that every year. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his many listeners."

Leave your mark with your listeners, you have much power, even by doing little things. Much can be learned from Kidd's charity work and professionalism. RIP Kidd.

Nathan Fast - July 2013 Spotlight

By Joe Nelson
The July 2013 SanDiegoRadio Spotlight features Channel 933's 'Night Maniac' Nathan Fast.
Joe Nelson: Nathan, thanks for taking your time for this interview. Please tell me, what is your current title/position?
Nathan Fast: I host weeknights from 7PM to Midnight on Channel 933, San Diego's Hit Music Station, and weekends on 102.7 KIIS-FM in Los Angeles.

JN: What are your favorite parts of the job?
NF: I love everything about my job - from prepping during the day, to keeping myself up-to-date on pop culture and artist news, to brainstorming fun and creative ideas in promotions meetings, to interacting with listeners online, on-air, and out on the streets. I get to put on my headphones and entertain Southern California each and every night. I love it all and am motivated to do a better job each and every day.

JN: Who are your all-time favorite musical artists?
NF: Incubus, Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

JN: And your current favorite?
NF: Otherwise - (I became friends with singer Adrian and lead guitarist Ryan when I first moved to Las Vegas and I have enjoyed watching them explode onto the rock charts in 2013) and Avicii..

JN: Tell me about your personal side
NF: I grew up on a farm in Ohio and always wanted to be in the NBA. I'm a big believer that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, but realized my dream of being a professional basketball player just wasn't meant to be. I moved to Las Vegas after college to work as a financial analyst for MGM-Mirage. I started working at KLUC-FM on the weekends and then overnights before quitting my corporate job and moving to Boise, Idaho to do nights for KSAS. I moved to San Diego at the beginning of January 2013 to do nights for Channel 933 and have been having a blast!

JN: What are your favorite restaurants?
NF: BASIC, Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, In-N-Out

JN: What are your movie interests?
NF: My favorites are The Hangover trilogy, Joe Dirt, and Back to the Future

JN: Do you have any hobbies?
NF: I wish I could say working out, but sadly I retired from competitive running after the Boston Marathon a few years ago. I now enjoy trying new restaurants and exploring new parts of San Diego

JN: What are your favorite parts of the city?
NF: I'm still discovering new favorite parts of San Diego on a weekly basis. Del Mar, La Jolla Shores and Coronado Island are at the top of the list right now. I love a good view.

JN: Is there anything else you'd like to share?
NF: I feel fortunate to be surrounded every day by some of the most talented and motivational people I've ever met. My Music Director/Assistant Program Director, Frankie V, has taken me under his wing, showed me around San Diego, and taught me what it means to be a great night jock. My Program Director, Joe Haze, and my Vice President of Programming, John Peake, have both coached me and given me the opportunities to grow as a jock and in one of the coolest markets in the country.
Nathan with my family and I at Cafe Coyote in Old Town

Nathan, thanks a ton for your time!

I'm Still Here!

By Joe Nelson
I know things have been a little quiet of late, so I wanted to drop in and share a little note. I would rather the column go a few days with no new posts, rather than do what I have seen some columns do and just fill it with fluff. Not to question the way anyone else runs their sites, just my opinion.
Be assured when I do post items, they are reliable and I have double or even triple checked the validity. I say this because I know I have left you 'hanging' on a few stories. For example, Dave & Jeff returning, the possible CBS sale, and maybe a couple others. Trust me, I have made notes on all my 'hangers', and you can be assured you WILL hear it from me, hopefully first.
I also appreciate the way SanDiegoRadio has moved into doing more promotions, I heard many listeners check this site, so whatever we can do to promote our stations, I am all in on it.
When it comes to traffic, I never release numbers, but I can say the traffic on SanDiegoRadio is extremely good, so let's keep this momentum rolling!
Send me what you have, I love doing this. As most of you know, I do carry a full time 'regular' job, I will take care of you still.
Please be sure to check your JUNK folder and add my email address as safe, I have had a few people tell me some demons placed my emails in that folder. That was annoying.

The July edition of The SanDiegoRadio Spotlight is almost ready, who will it be? Well, I guess you will have to check back!

Thanks for all your support, this is fun. Also, it is great seeing you all around town. If you will be out and about, please drop me a line! Also, please see the Facebook page for SanDiegoRadio right HERE

The Mountain gets power increase from the FCC.

KRLY-FM received permission from the FCC to double our out power on Friday. Several months ago the station the station asked for permission to move to 106.9 because of a thermal ducting issue with KWVE San Clemente that was causing interference issues for KRLY. At that time the station also asked the commission to correct information regarding tower height that was not accurate. The request was dismissed by the FCC on March 15 and the technical issues were never addressed. Station Manager received a message from the commission Friday evening that the information issue had been updated and the station could double its output power. "David and I as well as everyone at the station are stoked that we are going to be able to better serve our listeners. It's a pretty big deal to be able to double your output power." Torrick plans to have the signal to the increased power for "Jack's Tracks" with Chris Carmichael Saturday afternoon at 2 PM.

Interview With Z90's Rick Moorten

By Joe Nelson
Rick Moorten was hired Tuesday to take over the morning show duties. Rick has been at Wild 101 in Boise, Idaho, but Rick is no stranger to San Diego. I discussed the move with Rick last night.
Rick: I am beyond thrilled to be coming back to a city I consider my one and only true home!!!! I've had a fantastic time working in Boise, a city full of some of the kindest, most considerate, wonderful people you'll ever meet!

I've been the morning host at Wild 101 for four years in August! Before that, I had the privilege to work with true legends in the business. Jeff and Jer, and be a member of the Jeff and Jer Showgram for nearly 7 years alongside true talents and friends Tommy, Randy, Laura, and Emily. Not to mention working for one of the best talent coaches and programmers in the business, Tracy Johnson!

It's been a great opportunity, while I will be saying goodbye, it can't compare to the thrill of coming to work for Local Media San Diego with people like GM Gregg Wolfson, and OM Joe Lindsay, and PD R Dub!!

This is a great opportunity for me, and the dream job I've been looking for, and I can't wait to get in the chair, get behind the mic, and have at it!

Thanks for your time, Rick.

From the desk of R Dub! Program Director...

After an extensive nationwide search, I’m pleased to announce Jammin’ Z90’s next on-air and on-line superstar!

Meet Rick Moorten, who is returning to the city he calls home.
Rick hosted mornings in Palm Springs before moving to San Diego where he worked on the Jeff N Jer show on Star for many years. He later took over afternoons on Star, before leaving to Boise to build a successful morning show and help lead the Rhythm station there to success (WiLD 101)

Aside from his magnificent talent, he has a deep-seated determination to win in San Diego. This was a natural fit for both parties and we’re looking forward to building San Diego’s premier morning program.

Rick is set to debut on Jammin’ Z90 at 5AM on Wednesday, July 31
. Rick’s interests include live music, playing hockey and flying small planes! Rick is a wonderful personality, one of the hardest workers you will meet, and is absolutely thrilled to be coming to Z90.
